ArcadeVGA moved to new computer causes XP to hang
« on: March 29, 2008, 07:50:26 pm »
I am in the process of upgrading the PC in my MAME cab and have come across something very strange.  My AVGA2 (AGP version) doesn't seem to work in this PC (P4, Asus P4P800-E motherboard).  I had to use a temporary video card just to get through the XP install (with the AVGA in it would hang about halfway through). After XP was installed, I put the AVGA2 back in and rebooted and I can see all the POST screens and even the XP startup screen, but then it hangs.  I am able to get into Windows via safe mode, but I can't get in normally so I can even install the drivers.  I've tried the DVI port with an LCD and the VGA port with my arcade monitor, and both hang in the same place.  I have an email out to Andy, but I thought I'd ask here in case someone has any suggestions.  Any help would be appreciated.

long shot but may work check your bios settings like making the AGP port the priority instead of the pci.

or check the voltage settings to the agp port.

Thanks.
I did make sure AGP was priority over PCI, but I didn't mess with the voltage settings.  It's set at 1.5V I believe.  Should I go higher?  Is there any chance of frying the AVGA by going higher?

no I would not go any higher if it is already on 1.5V becuase it could damage it if it was not meant to handle anymore then V1.5.

I wouldn'tve used the avga to install XP anyway. I'd think you would be able to load the avga drivers from safe mode, though.

From the 2nd to last post in the thread I just linked:

Quote
Just to update, I had installed an ATI 9600XT in there last night with the latest drivers.  Tonight, I uninstalled those drivers, removed the 9600, plugged the AVGA back in and booted into safe mode.  This time the 'found new hardware' dialog showed up.   I dunno!  Talking to you is like banging your head against a wall!
I was able to install the drivers with no problems.  I got nothin.  ???

I was going to post and ask if you did that becuase ultimarc states if you had any ati cards installed prior to run a tool that removes all the ati drivers otherwise it will conflict.

Yeah that's the weird thing.  I never had an ATI card in there before when it was failing.  I only put the other ATI card in there after I had just about given up.  Once I put in the 9600XT, removed it and its drivers, and put in the AVGA then it started working.  LOL  I still think there is something screwy about my motherboard.
