Hi all

I've got 3 different monitors, all new - 2 are Wei-ya and the other is a Hantarex Polo, all are 29 inch.

The problem is, I can set the screen to be correct, but if you are playing a game such as streetfighter, characters are noticably wider on the left side of the screen, and as you move them further to the center they get a bit thinner. All the games do it, it's just more noticable on ones where you can mirror each side. None of the monitor adjustments seem to be able to correct this at all. This is the same with both game boards through JAMMA and a PC running MAME. It's really annoying me as I have spent a lot of money on the monitors and none of them are correct. Surely they aren't all like this??

thats strange to have all monitors doing the same thing
the problem is the linearity adjustment, but what you describe is strange because i have never seen a problem with the horizontal linearity on a hantarex polo, yes vertical but horizontal no and i have worked on an awful lot of hantarex polo
you are talking about 3 seperate cabs no?

I actually bought a cab new, it had the Wei-Ya inside it already, and as it had this issue as described, the vendor agreed to exchange the monitor. The new one came and did the same thing. So I figured it was maybe the make of monitor and purchased the 29 inch hantarex, but after hooking that one up today it did the same thing.

My friends didn't notice the issue until I pointed it out, but what I can't understand is how all 3 have the same issue - it's always wider on the left edge than on the right and not the other way around.

Yes, the Hantarex is all in a frame and came complete, so it's totally different kit.

something really daft going on here,
impossible for 3 different monitors to do this same problem(well 1 in million chance)
are the colours crisp?

To be honest, the picture is brilliant on the Hantarex apart from the far edges looking a bit blurry (is that because it hasn't been used for a while?) I think it looks better than the wei-ya did in terms of contrast etc.

I can use the controls to move the picture and stretch etc, but whenever the image is centered and I then expand it to fill the screen, the left side is fatter. The middle all seems fine, the right side perhaps looks a bit scrunched up if that makes sense?

As an example, on streetfighter when you win a round, you get a little two fingers up icon to show you have won. When this icon is on the left and the right (ie both players have won a round each) it looks like a squashed square on the right hand side, but a slightly stretched square on the left. Also, where it says the character names the left side is obviously more stretched out. I've only used the actual controls with twisty dials on to adjust, not touched anything else.

if you posted this with only the hantarex as faulty i would suggest a leaky capacitor/r36 on the neck card or (if its located) L109 horizontal linearity coil
try looking for the linearity coil, its near the flyback transformer, try adjusting that
this is a strange problem indeed

How do I adjust the linearity coil ? Excuse my ignorance, this is all quite new. Am I better getting a technician to look at it to avoid damaging?

you would need a plastic trimming tool to do this,i could take a photo to show where it is but you would need to wait until tuesday as i am on my 2 day break

Ok, if you can show me that would be much appreciated, I can wait until Tuesday :)
Is it fairly straightforward? And also do you think it would even out the image and fix the problem? I don't want to make it worse.

Thanks for all the advice/help so far

i need to recreate your problem on one of my cabs first before i can say whether this adjustment will be a fix or not
have you tried putting a game into test and selecting a grid pattern to see how different the left and right sides are?

Yeah, I used the Konami grid - I wouldn't be as worried if the sides were more stretched than the middle only evenly across both sides - it's because the left is more stretched than the right...

I'm no expert, but on the 3rd completely new, different make monitor exhibiting the same fault I'd start looking beyond the monitor....

...although I have to confess  I struggle to see how you impact horizontal linearity with a signal fault. Or in fact, anything that isn't a monitor....

All 3 exhibiting the same problem sounds like an outside force of some sort.  The signal you are sending each monitor perhaps, or some type of environmental position of the cabinet.

Have you tried moving the cabinet.  I know it sounds crazy and maybe it is but it seems like your cabinet is sitting right on top of the arcade bermuda triangle.   :dunno

As it turns out, there is an east-west fault and a horizontal linearity fault too... So I may actually send it back (it's new!) and get my money back then invest in a better one. What's the best 29 inch I wonder.....

Thanks for everyones input though

best quality monitor i have come across are nanao ms9,nanao ms2931 tri sync both using toshiba tubes, superb quality
btw for your hantarex to be new it must be a polostar tri sync or a polo 3,what does the label say on the chassis casing?

It is a tri-sync monitor, I'll check out the ones you have listed. That one is going back for a refund tomorrow!

Are Pentranics any good as they are fairly nearby (I'm in the UK) to where I live?
I was thinking of popping over there and having a look, good prices too

I actually spoke to Harry today, he seems really nice and helpful.
As far as Nanao is concerned - is there a distribution center in the UK? Just out of interest. I think I'll go check out the Pentranics monitor if they will let me see it working before I buy it that would be great. I don't trust CRTs at the minute - had 3 bad experiances so far !

suzo may have some nanao left in stock but they are real pricey, you have been unlucky with your monitors but this is not normal.
go see the quad sync and make sure you look at all the different frequencies running

What's the advantage of the quad sync - as far as I know I will only be playing arcade games that run at 15khz anyway?

are you gonna run mame?
not all games are 15khz,with a quad sync you have the option to run up to the latest resolutions
also you can mod your cab to run consoles like ps3,its makes it more future proof.
if you want only to run older jamma boards and no intention of running egs/vga or xvga then get a cga monitor and save a few quid

It will be MAME - do you have any good recommendations of a game to try for each frequency? I have the full romset and am running via the arcade vga card on direct draw etc

Thanks!!

start at the most basic games like pacman for 15k,try virtua fighter for 25k then just try any pc based vga game for 31k
would be good to know how a ps3 looks as well
let us know how you get on

use the avres tool

http://www.ultimarc.com/avres.zip

it will make all the 15k run native and the non 15K run close and safe to their natives.

I may be selling my nanao 26" MS8-26SU 15-25k selectable if intrested.

i would think the cost of shipping an entire monitor from the u.s to the u.k would not be worthwhile
