My logo concept
« on: March 11, 2008, 01:16:59 pm »
My arcade cabinet has been stuck at the 70% complete but 100% playable stage for a few years now.  Several of the projects posted in the last few months have gotten the wheels turning in my brain again and I really want to get to the 98% complete stage. I am pretty sure that 100% can't be achieved. There will always be some new tweak to try.

The biggest hold up has been a name and theme for the cab.

The first emulator I ran into was Retrocade.  I ran it in my cab for a long time because it had better emulation for my favorite vector games than mame did at the time.  I have always thought that Retrocade was a great name, but I was reluctant to use it because it had been used by others for their cabs and by the emulator.

Seeing as I still haven't come up with a better name I have decided to go with it.

This logo started out as a rough to see if the ideas I had in my head would work.  I had intended to do a lot more with it but now I like it the way it is.

The inspirations came in many small ideas from many sources. NASA mission patches, CornChip's Revolver. The TimeSink, Ghost in the Machine, lokesen's Project Mame, and Knievel's various projects were some of the main ones.

Anyway here is the logo:

My first taintative steps into arcade emulation was Retrocade. Mame was just so slooooow at the time. I like the concept of the "Nasa patch", but I think your colour scheme is all over the place. You have so many colours that seem to conflict with each other. I'd personally stick to a couple of colours and work with different shades. I think your font needs to be taller. Its position is perfect but It doesnt jump out and smack me in the face! I think thats what you need from a logo. Being your going the whole "NASA patch" theme why not change the arrow for an actuall ship or dare I say it the "freedom" or "independance" from armageddon. Still a damn good job! My £0.02

I can agree with you about the colors.  I will probably go with the red and yellow.

I am still undecided on the space ship.  I do know that I want to stick with something that is more abstract and retro looking.  1980-81 was the peak of my arcade experience.  I was kind of going with the simple look of the vector games that were always my favorites.

I also considered using a ship from the side art of one of those games.

If it was me, two things...

I would have that text break your circular plane, give it some interest and not confine a horiztonal space vertically by containing it in a circle.

I would also stay away from "black" drop shadows.  Use colors the compliment for your shadows, black when used inappropriately muddies an image.

That's pretty good.  I already got rid of the drop shadow because it messes up the edges when I use it in an FE skin with alpha blending.

I like the broken circle Retrocade.  It still has the feel of a mission patch, but it doesn't look so much like a merit badge.  You might also try breaking the circle with your "Asteroids" spaceship.  With everything contained, it looks pretty static.  Also watch your use of highlights.  It's washing out the border like the black was muddying it.  Lighten the yellow, but don't get rid of it.

Zomg!! I love your idea. It just gave me an awesome idea, and I went for a googling spree to find this link http://history.nasa.gov/mission_patches.html.

stuff like

A little photoshopping an you'll be there. Good idea, and can't wait to see what you do with it.

I was a child of the Apollo era so I was looking at the older missions.  The Apollo 14 patch in particular.  I do like that sun burst though.  By the way, what's a "Zomg"?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.
