Geometry Wars - Wii
« on: February 19, 2008, 11:07:14 am »

Just got this... I've played it a little bit on the 360 and I have to say I like the Black Widow style dual sticks a lot better than the Wii's pointer based aiming, at least so far.  Anyone else playing this?  How does the Classic controller compare with the 360 control scheme?

classic controller is the only way to play on the wii, IMO. I'm still addicted to trying to beat my friends high scores on xbox live so the wii version doesn't get much love.

I was going to get that until I saw that the GC controllers weren't supported.  :banghead:

I got it via steam on the PC and I've played it on the 360 -- the 360 controls are where it's at.  Didn't know it supported the virtual console controller, maybe I'll have to pick it up.  It's quite fun.

I spent some quality time with it last night.  I've gotten used to the Wii controls but the depth part of the pointer aiming is really hard to see once the screen fills with half a billion objects.  I will pick up a Classic controller to see how that compares.

This game needs to be in a Black Widow style cabinet.  Is the Vista version standalone?  I know the Steam version needs you to be connected to their service.

It's a shame they couldn't have added using the DS to control the Wii to the list of features that come when you have both games.

That's probably not even possible.

Thought I'd throw an update in here.  Daniel B is right - the Wiimote is decent but akward.  The Classic Controller really hits the arcade spot (as much as a console controller can).  I'm really digging this game, the vector feel is pretty damn close.  This game is expanded quite a ways from the original and is worth the price.

Yeah, it is too late now that the games have already been published, but I just thought I would clue you in that Nintendo is making other Wii games with DS as controller-  In case you think it was never possible.  .
Don't know why anybody would want it as a Geometry wars controller though.

Neato.  RF controllers are one thing - the latency over an 802.11 connection may rule it out as a real time game controller, which is where I was going with what I said before.  They could, of course, find a way to do it, but I'd be shocked to see a good real time control scheme that way.

Play Geometry Wars on the DS, and see how effective the "scribble" method is a giving you a nice spread of fire across a particular region vs using thumbsticks, then come back here and tell me you don't know why anybody would use it as a control method for Geometry Wars,

I MUCH prefer twin sticks. I hated Geometry Wars on the DS, because of its stylus controls.

Been a while since I played it, but IIRC, the Vista version is standalone.

Yeah. the bandwidth wouldn't work out for geometry wars.  I would try that scribble thing on DS if the game was free, but as it is I prefer to play in high-res on my computer and scribble my mouse around.  So I won't get around to trying that until the game is $3.  It must be pretty cool.  I wish I knew an effective way to play it with dual mouse or trackball + mouse.  I am surprised there is not an option for offline play in steam like all the other steam games.
