JERICHO SEASON 2 STARTS TONIGHT!
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:28:57 am »
Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware.  ;)
This will be the only show on tv this season to go from start to finish - only 7 episodes though.

There is an advance review at IGN, and initial buzz for the 7 episodes is very positive.

I'll be watching it tonight. The wife was out by 10, so no live broadcast for me. I did sneak a few minutes though. These 7 episodes should all be to the point and action packed. That was what killed them in the 1st season - it just took too long to set up everything and once they did, their audience was gone.

Finished watching the premiere a bit ago. That was an excellent episode. At the rate the storytelling is going, they are definitely going to fit a bunch of story into 7 episodes. I figure that most of the secondary cast and stories will be cut out - such as Dale and his grocery store, Deaf girl and boyfriend, etc. Many of the detractors of the show will be very happy for that methinks.

I do have my doubts as to a 3rd season though. The overnight ratings for the premiere was a 4.3/7 . Personally, I think that is a pretty darn good number for a 10pm premiere, and coupled with the fact that hardly any shows have better numbers right now - with the exception of American Idol of course. They are doing a repeat airing on Saturday, and I think the execs will be paying very close to the retention numbers for next weeks new episode. Honestly I think next week will be the make or break ep. to see if the show will come back. If the numbers drop, it will pretty much guarantee that this will be it. If the numbers retain or go up, then I guess we'll see.

Either way, I think these 7 episodes is a huge accomplishment in itself and I will be thoroughly happy either way to see some sort of conclusion to the story.

Any new watchers of this show? They have really outdone themselves so far for this season. I would hope that the other 7-8 million who watched it at first would come back, as they are getting everything they complained was missing before.

I have one thing to say about the current prime time TV schedule that I think is a big problem - American Idol is RUINING TV as we know it. The show is on 3 nights a week, 2 hours each night. I have no clue why someone would watch such mind-numbing programming 3 nights a week, but they do. Each show has maybe 15-20 minutes of ACTUAL material, and the fill the rest with stupid tension building crap.
I just have to ask the 30 million people who watch this religiously: why would you waste 2 hours watching this junk when you could spend the same 2 hours watching something with actual content?

I totally agree.  Thank God for our DVR.  We watch AI but the two hours shows are cut down to about 15-20 minutes and the hour recap is only 5 minutes (just to see who gets sent home.) Me and the wife have more fun trying to decide who is going to be listed on votefortheworst.com then who we think should be kicked off (ei the rocker nurse and the guy who butchered Killer Queen should totally not be there anymore.)

Back to Jericho.  My office mate started watching after she heard me and my boss always talking about it.  She was glad that Sci-Fi is showing the first season and was able to get totally caught up.  Also, why hasn't Sci-Fi picked this show up like they did with Stargate SG-1?

I'm more pissed that Sci-Fi didn't make an offer on Firefly than I am about Jericho. Jericho is not Sci-fi, so it wouldn't fit over there.

I agree with you about  the Firefly thing, but Jericho is alternate history (reminds me of Harry Turtledove stuff.)  I think of it more Sci-Fi than most of those horrible Saturday night Horror movies they have on there and don't get me started on Ghost Hunters.

4 episodes down, 3 to go. I have to say, I am blown away by what the show has accomplished in 4 episodes. The latest was top notch Television. The ending was really sad, and has set up a big showdown for the last 3 episodes.

I agree.  The highlights for the upcoming episodes (3 to go) almost make it sound like they may continue the series.  I know its just their way to get people to watch but one can hope.  Especially if they keep this great storytelling.

Just so you know, you aren't the only person I've heard talking that "Sci-Fi" should pick this up. I think the people who run CBS really do like this show, and my feeling is that they would listen to offers of cable networks if they just couldn't justify bringing the show back to network TV. The nielsen numbers for the show are consistent - about 7 million viewers, but the online and DVR numbers for Jericho are through the roof. They've been screwed by something or another almost every week so far. Texas and Ohio preempted the show for election coverage Tuesday night. In other areas, the UNC basketball game ran over and ate into the show.

I also think that dumbass Big Brother show kills their ratings too. When I see that show on, I run for the hills.

Is the second season more realistic than the first one? The first one had some major reality check problems.

Everyone driving around all the FREAKING TIME. Including that one guy with the deaf sister driving 13 miles into town constantly. Where was that gas coming from???? Adding comments about being almost out of gas doesn't change the basic problem that they established that all they had was the very limited supply that was already in the town.

The "Too many peasants in Stars Hollow" directorial style that has 10-11 people crossing the street at all times in the background of almost all outdoor scenes (Gilmore Girls was horrible about doing that same thing, "Wow, look, 1 percent of the town population is jaywalking in front of Luke's Diner RIGHT NOW!!"). Although that is the sort of thing that doesn't annoy you until you notice it and then start looking for it.

One 1st season episode had people GIVING AWAY food to a food drive freely and calmly and then those same people rioting to get at some free chinese rice the very next day.

The ENDLESS supply of candles that EVERYONE in Jericho had.

The overall lack of crime and panicking in the first season was also pretty hard to swallow.

However I LIKED everything related to the kid with the grocery store, he was my favorite character.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Short answer: It's TV - get over it. ;)

Most people hated Dale's story in the 1st season. I think alot of people actually quit watching because too much time was spent on him.

I'm a new watcher.  I think it's pretty good and I make an attempt to watch an episode on tv.  I've watched one or two of the first season before the second started and i didnt really care for it but the new season interests me.

I love the series.  I don't understand why they haven't already killed the town administrator.  Also, why aren't people more upset that the flag and government have been changed?

After last nights show, this is definately my favorite show currently on...although thats not saying much since theres currently only 3 or 4 other decent shows on right now.  I really hope they pick it up for a third season, but at least they should conclude a large part of the storyline by the end of this season since they knew going in that its unlikely they'll be coming back.

I've never seen it and I've never had any desire to.  Honestly I think it's cos the title sounds biblical, so I always kind of assume that it's like the Left Behind series or something.  I know it's retarded, since I have no good reason to think that the show has a religion streak.  But I've just never checked it out and I think that might be partly why.

The quality level of the show this season is thru the roof. It is really coming together for one hell of a conclusion. I expect we'll be finding out the fate of the show in the next week or so. Just a reminder, they do in fact have 2 endings filmed for the season finale, depending on if the show will get a season 3.

Yeah, I've heard the story from a few sources. It is sad, but at least they can say they went out in a blaze of glory. Judging by their time slot, the lead-in show, and the fact CBS NEVER booked their cast for talk shows, they never planned on the show continuing past this 7 ep run.

I just find the current state of TV sad. It is quite paralleled to baseball over the last 25 years. Once upon a time, baseball was a game of strategy, in which you bunted, sacrificed, and stole bases to create runs.
Now, baseball is a glorified home run derby with larger than life, instant gratification overpaid free agents.

TV used to require studios to build shows from the ground up. You put a show in a good lead-in spot to try  and keep viewers from one of your established shows. You advertise, you get your cast out there talking. It used to take a season or two to build a show.

Nowadays, studios expect instant gratification for EVERY show. They throw in a fancy CGI graphic and a free agent movie star and think the checks will roll in. This happened with Jericho at the beginning. "Look, we have Skeet Ulrich of Scream, and a cgi mushroom cloud. Come watch us!

Jericho never had a lead-in show once. Never, period, end of story. That is a BIG deal. I have never seen any cast appear on talk shows or any other show. The wife tells me that Skeet will be on Rachel Ray Monday. Wow, that helps  now...

And what happens when the show doesn't hit homeruns in its first 3-4 episodes? The station is ready to pull the plug that quick.

About Sci-fi, they can suck it. That is ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- that the reason they couldn't take this show on (same with Firefly) because of the budget. Jericho cut their budget almost in half this season and made a better show. Firefly was done on the supercheap for a graphics intensive show.
Are you telling me that Farscape, Babylon5, SG1, Atlantis, and BSG are cheaper? Give me a break!

All I can say is "Oh Well." I've enjoyed these episodes, and hope the finale is good. Even though I think the CBS studio brass are dumbasses, I am still thankful for the show coming back for the time it did.

That's an interesting assumption shmokes.

Actually, it'd be right up your ally. Imagine Rumsfeld arranging for nukes to be set off in American cities and framing it on the terrorists. Then imagine David Duke swooping into the western states and forming a new confederation to secede from the post-nuke American Government based in Cheyenne Mountain. Basically, that's Jericho.

Personally, I'm stoked about Galactica returning. Can't wait.

I agree.  And the assumption is based on absolutely nothing other than the title.  I've never even seen so much as a preview for the show.  And I can't even articulate why Jericho sounds biblical to me.  I don't know if there's something in the Bible or possibly the Book of Mormon that sounds like Jericho, but if there is I can't put my finger on it off the top of my head.  At any rate, it's totally irrational.  And, honestly, I might be more inclined to substantiate or refute my position if I watched more than about two - three hours of TV per month.  But I just have very little free time, and what time I do have I tend to spend on the internet, playing videogames, or watching movies more than watching TV.

I had to look up David Duke.  That's interesting.  So is this guy a protagonist, or antagonist?  It seems strange that they would have the protagonist be someone like David Duke.

Well, at least they wrapped all the major plot points.  It just seemed a little rushed.  I was amazed how fast the Mayor could get from Cheyenne back to Jericho.  Same with Jake & Robert's movements.  I'm sure they cut out a lot of filler to finish the series.

Oh well, maybe we will see a mini-series or made for tv movie Jericho:Civil War.

Watched it, LOVED it. I can live with that ending.

It was kind of obvious where the season would have ended with the introduction of the "phone guy". I found that casting quite ironic if you've watched another certain action show on Fox. There was definite potential for another season, possibly more, and there still is for sure. I doubt any other station will pick it up though.

In closing, THANK YOU CBS for bringing the show back and allowing the creators of show to give us one hell of a concluding ride. :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

I was happy with the ending as well.  My wife and I were fans of the show from the beginning.  The only station I could see possibly picking it up would be SciFi, but I doubt it

It was an okay ending.  ;)

Im just surprised they let the jet with the bomb get as far as it did.  Cheyenne couldnt have honestly thought they would just land for them to take the evidence so shooting them before they got close to the border would have been a smarter move.  Of course they are a corrupt government so that might explain the lack of a decent plan.

Now if there was a movie showing the civil war (including what happens with Beck and his merry men) i would be pleased.

Im glad i watched the second season and didnt miss the finale.
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

I've just watched most of season 1 this weekend (2 more episodes to go). I really like the apocalyptic setting but was a bit disappointed by the unrealistic reaction of people. Oh, all major cities in the US are destroyed  :o Ah, well, let's just get on with our lives. I think in reality there would be a lot more anxiety about what was happening and who was behind it. Sometimes the series reminds me of a Hallmark movie.. with nukes
Wish list: Galaga, Pacman, Pooyan, Star Wars cockpit, Gauntlet, Tron

And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

I don't know about you, but if I was without power, had neighbors getting ready to mortar ---my bottom---, had little to no food, and was freezing... world political matters would take a back seat to personal matters too.
