I've been suckered in by small anthropomorphic animals.
« on: February 05, 2008, 12:04:43 pm »
I gave my daughter "Animal Crossing" over the weekend.  And I must say that is a Winner.  She loved it.

Well after she went to bed I decided to try it out and thought it would be cool to send her some letters and presents.  Hours later I was hooked.  I totally wish I was playing right now!

Anyone else played this? (for the GC on the Wii.)

I picked it up shortly after I got a Wii since I had heard so much about it, but I couldn't get into it and haven't played the game since   :dunno

I bought this too for cheap (used) for my wife but we haven't tried it yet.
So is there no way to truly 'pause' the game?  I know time continues to pass even when you turn off the game and your house gets dirty and lawn overgrown, etc.  That's a pretty cool feature, but for some reason it bothers me and I worry that I'll become obsessed haha.

You can turn the system clock back. That's about it.

I tried it on the DS and didn't care for it too much. Anyways, the last thing I need is a game I have to feel obligated to care for every day. My wife plays nintendogs... :P. We'll be sitting in the living room doing something, and she'll go grab the DS and say "I need to feed the dog". There is absolutely NOTHING left original to do in the game now, but she is stuck feeding a damn virtual animal on a damn video game. Its like those Tamagotchi things from the 90's, just 100x worse.

Develop an allergy and tell her she has to get rid of the cartridge.

Heh, when she asks me to feed it, I throw stuff at it and try to hit it in the head. ;D

You're a bad owner.  Someday that dog is going to get out and attack Wario.  Then you'll be sorry.

Well it's not a Pitbull, so I should be okay.

My Sims reminds me a lot of Animal Crossing, save the lack of Cockroaches and weeds.
So basically better.

My wife played for 13 hours straight.  Only stopping to pee.

Cross it with a pit bull and let your wife discover it herself.

Me and the wife were once addicted to The Sims and The Sims 2 on the PC. Time stood still in that game though, so you didn't have to obligate yourself to play.

Played Sims 2 on DS and it was annoying to spend an hour just running around vacumming if you didn't play for a while.

The clock ticks by in Animal Crossing but nothing really happens unless you are playing.  The game uses the clock to determine what events happen in the game.  This can be the appearance of a NPC, a festival, the season or just what the other NPC's are doing.

I'm really glad there is no virtual upkeep like a Tamagotchi.  Cutsie graphics and all it's an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

I just figured out how to plant a money tree!  :applaud:

Really though I have the most fun being able to interact with my daughters character (though indirectly).  She gets a kick out of seeing the letter's I've sent her.  Plus I can mail her gifts as well.  Fun stuff.

I don't know any other major differences but you can get gifts of actual NES games on the Gamecube version.  I got "Clu Clu Land" from some NPC with bad taste in gifts.

What happens when you forward it by very large quantities of time?  Like years, decades, centuries, and even millenia?

Absolutly nothing.

Time does not pass for your characters or the world they are in. (unless you are playing.)

The clock only matters when you start a playsession. The game checks the date and time to see what season it should be, if it should be day or night and if any special events are going to happen.

Millenia...Hmmm, I'm sure it's only limited by the range of the games clock.
From what I've read while the game tracks the year it doesn't use this info for much.  I think there's a grab bag of items you can buy that's price is set by the year you are in. That's about it.

Time to resurrect this thread for a second...

I popped in to my local funcoland and they had the gamecube to gameboy advance link cable used for $2.99. SWEET!

In animal crossing you use this to unlock a special island that you can visit.  pretty cool.

My daughter was pretty stoked too. It worked fine on the Wii.

I don't know what it is about this game but I really enjoy playing it with my kids.  Granted I usually only have time for about a half hour or so but the cool thing is that this is still fulfilling.  It's been over a month now and we're still going strong.

Who knew...?
