Who's up for some more marquee feedback?
« on: February 05, 2008, 02:15:44 am »
So I have had these ideas bouncing around in my head, and I'm trying to get something designed. I'm getting closer to the vision in my head, but I am also rapidly approaching the limits of my design abilities. Here are a couple of marquees that I am considering... any thoughts?

A couple of notes (in no particular order):
  • The name Barskade comes from my name (thought up by an old friend - thanks Munkee!), so this doesn't need to turn into a "No More Cade Names" thread.
  • The fire images are just tiny thumbnails stretched out of proportion so I can get an idea of what it will look like. The final design will feature higher resolution fire.
  • Also from point #2, the lines and watermark on the fire images won't be there in the final design.
  • I don't think I want the fire font so red in the 4th dsign, but I am too tired to mess with it any more tonight.
  • The theme for my cabinet will be... well, fire. The cab will be black with chrome T-molding, and there will be a B in a similar font/style on the sides of the cab. The CP will be some sort of fire/metal theme also, similar to the Infernal Machine (no I don't want to copy it, but I actually had a similar idea before I saw that one!).

I'm up for any comments or ideas that y'all are willing to give.

i like number 4 the most, by far.

Only thing about 4 you might want to concider is doing something to make the bottom text better readable. So perhaps a light stroke or some outer glow.

good luck, looks great!

I also like number 4 the most, but could you please repost it without the watermark so I don't have to clone stamp the hell out of it?  jk

Add me for #4, but I don't think the bottom text will be that visible.

#3.  The subtitle is too obscured in #1 and #4.  Simple is better when elements are that large.

#3 over #2 because the subtitle is better.

Id go with number 1. The background is a bit light on the others and will allow too much illumination when backlit.

I like the first one, but I would add outlines to the text so it separates from the background.
Nice work!

OK, thanks for the feedback.

Now let's say we could combine elements of the different designs, or make the slogan text more readable on any of the designs by using a glow or something. Does that change anyone's favorite?

number 1 would be my choice if you make the adjustments you describe.

I agree with Mega and daniel
Make the adjustments and post a pic.

I modified 1 and 4. I am not sure I am in love with the slogan text/color yet... does anyone have any other suggestions?

Hmm... I think you need to do something to make the "pay your dues" stand out more... I will leave it to the more experienced photoshoppers to give you suggestions haha! To me, they seem a little hard to read. They don't stand out from the background enough... Other than that though... looking good!

just my thoughts...

Of the two, the second marquee is definitely stronger.  The Barskade text stands out more, and it more resolved as a separate design element (meaning it could almost stand alone) than the metal Barskade text up above.

The colors are bothering me.  Blue is Orange's compliment, but I don't like the blue treatment on the marquee mostly because you have Fire imagry and the blue serves to cool everything down.  Not to mention, as was said before, it is hard to read.  Not to mention, the fire is a strong image, powerful, but yet it's opacity is knocked down and the strength is lost.

I would follow the suggestion up above and go with some creative border, more than the layer styles in Photoshop, maybe actually rubber stamp or create from hand - fire around the subtitle and I would maybe try a black drop shadow on the Barskade text and then bump that fire all the way up in opacity.  I think something about the grey metal may need to be done also,....I think the first thing I would try it to make it less bright grey, and play with your contrast and adjustments to get it to be more of a translucent pattern / charcoal colored.
