Snap folder PROBLEM!
« on: January 27, 2008, 12:35:45 pm »
Hey, I am running MAME v1.22 with mgalaxy1.1 frontend. I can get any ROM previews to work with it mgalaxy. It requres the snap folder to be the updated version i.e. c:/mame/snaps/dkong/dkong.png instead of c:/mame/snaps/dkong.png. From what i gather, mame switched to a different snap folder format around 1.07 or something. I have searched far and wide for a zip file with the updated format but all i find are dead links to old torrents. I see pictures of other peoples cabs and they all have snap previews. You guys got them somewhere!! LOL. If anyone has an updated version or knows where to find one, please LMK. Ill PM my email if someone wants to send thier snaps folder. Thanks for  your time.

I don't understand what you want.  All the frontends that I know want the snaps to be in one folder.  I understand that if you manually create a snap from within Mame, Mame puts the snap in its own folder, but what does that have to do with what the front ends want?

my frontend (mgalaxy) requires the snaps put into their own folder, like mame does.  for example, for it to use a snapshot called donky.png, it would need to look like this..

c:/mame/snaps/bubble/donky.png

but all my snapshots are all bunched in one folder, im looking for a snaps folder with all the PNG files in their own folder. A PNG with the name bubble would be c:/mame/snaps/bubble/bubble.png      am i makeing sense? I know there is a script going around for MAC users that puts all .png files in their own folders. Cant find one for PC.

Hmm, make me wonder if something like this can be completed in romlister.  You can have romlister compile all the roms that are available on your system.  From there you have the rom names and you can do something like this with a batchfile, well I think anyway.  Just providing some ideas.

cd "c:\mame\roms" mkdir "c:\mame\roms\%rom%" or something like that.  Check out romlister.  It is a pretty powerful utility and is really easy to modify batch file scripting once you figure out how to perform the search options in romlister.

Sorry I cound not be a little more descriptive but am not infront my my mame computer and don't have romlister installed on my laptop.  Hopefully this gives you some direction.  Thanks, Shane

my frontend (mgalaxy) requires the snaps put into their own folder, like mame does.

Seems I didn't do a good job reading your first post.  My apologies.  One question though:  I thought that when Mame creates a snapshot, it produces a subfolder with the same name as the rom, but the actual PNG file doesn't have the rom name but is named with a number so that multiple snaps can be taken.  For example, C:\mame\snap\gorf\0000.png.  Does mgalaxy just use the first png file it finds in the C:\mame\snap\gorf for example?

Any chance the mgalaxy dev will add the option to pull snaps in from one folder?

lol, no problem, im just glad someone replied, i have this in artwork forum and nothing. You are correct, when you "take" a snap in mame, it does put into its own folder. That is what my frontend requires, but i dont have time to manually take 6,800 snaps :D. I was kinda hopeing somebody who has a snap folder setup like that could send it to me. mgalaxy does not have an option to pull snaps from one folder. I would like to find another frontend that does, so i can use my old snaps folder. I think mamewah does, but its very confuseing to install. Mgalaxy is just one .exe file, simple other then the snaps issue.

Ok .... i will ask ...... why dont you use a frontend which simply wants all snaps in one folder., then just place all your snaps in that folder and be done.   I would not even consider using a frontend which required each snapshot to be in there own folder .....  it seems ridiculous to me and a waste of time ..... perhaps I am missing something about this frontend which makes it "nice" to use?

try some of these batch files:

http://fixunix.com/ms-dos/270770-create-dir-folder-based-filename.html

if that fails, you might try some of the renamer tools here:

http://xbox.nugnugnug.com/index.php?name=UpDownload&req=viewsdownload&sid=81

If THOSE fail, let me know and I'll write something for you-I have a tool that is ~85% of the way there already, and shouldn't take much to get it the rest of the way.

lol, i knew someone would :D.  I would like to use mamewah, but its too complicated to install. according to mgalaxys website, useing the "seperate folders in snap" is a issuse with mame, not mgalaxy. I may be mistaken, but thats what the website says. Many of the "easy install" frontends have a windows explorer look which i do not like. I just like the way mgalaxy looks and the ease of install (one .exe). If you have any recomendations that will use my current snaps folder and dont look like a windows explorer, please let me know. Thanks

I don't understand your logic here.  Yes, manually created snaps from within Mame are put in separate folders, but that doesn't require mgalaxy to use the same format.  That is only useful if you are planning on creating 6000+ snaps manually.  That's why no other front-end uses the "every snap in its own folder" format.  Have you tried Mala?

Well, I broke down and downloaded mgalaxy.  By default, it does not require snapshots to be in their own folder.  The setting is in the mg_preferences.ini file.  As long as you have the following in mg_preferences.ini it works like all other frontends:

Code: [Select]
snaps_separated=false
If you set it to true, it requires the snaps to be in their own folder.  8)

I am not sure what frontends you are trying which look like Windows Explorer, but you really should at least look at Mala, AtomicFE and GameEx ..... I believe these are the most talked about frontends at this forum and I guarantee none of them look like Windows Explorer.

Thanks for the help. I did not see that config in the frontend. The snaps do work now. I have around 3100 snaps and about 6800 roms, do you have any idea where i could find a newer set? Most links i come across are all dead, or sites in other languages. Thanks for all your help, i will try some of the frontends you recomended.

Note that many of your ROMs are clones - e.g. "Puckman (J)" and "Pacman (U)" will use the same artwork file.

In case anyone else comes across this problem and doesn't want to change any frontend setting or anything, I've made a .bat file that will rename and move all of the snaps into the correct directory using this basic command

move C:\MAME\snap\puckman\0000.png C:\MAME\snap\puckman.png

There's probably a better way to do it but this works well for me.  Only takes about 20 seconds on my 2GHz P4 to go through 6344 files.

Just change the extension from .txt to .bat and run it.  Note the snap directory will have to be under C:\MAME\snap for it to work

EDIT: Make sure you backup your snap folder just in case!
