Vectorizing Bitmap Images
« on: January 25, 2008, 03:57:28 pm »
I just came across this site today, which allows you to upload a bitmap image and it will vectorize it for you. They give you options for the level of detail, colors, etc., and they give you some tools to clean up the final result. And it's free.

Has anyone ever used it? I thought it might be useful in this crowd, as converting bitmap images to vector art is important for CP overlays, marquees and side art.

Tried that site when it was first posted. It does an ok job, but it doesnt work well with complex images. Its ok if you want a simple image vectored. Anything more complicated and it has some trouble. It also has a very restricted colour pallette. Try resizing the vectored results and you'll see what I mean. Not much difference to Illustrators colour trace.
When pixelated clipart just wont do, just call for Betty

In the previous thread, I found that it worked remarkably well, but only on very small images. Not suitable for full sized arcade artwork scans. Maybe I should try again to see if they increased the maximum resolution.

BTW the previous thread was Vector Magic from Stanford (creates vector images from bitmaps)

Doh. Thanks patrickl.

Definitely check out the previous thread. Lots of good feedback there.
