They do, but only the RIAA wastes money on distributing press releases to make sure it runs in every newspaper and the 6 oclock news.

There's been a case of a dude in the uk recently who ran a site hot linking to video players like google video etc.
He's been arrested by FACT and had his site shut down. Funnily enough they are not taking google to court for hosting the illegal material.

Personally, I don't want federal agencies wasting their time trying to stop me from breaking into pinballjim house and taking all of his stuff, and that's not the responsibility of state police, either.

Are you inferring that copyright infringement is even remotely analogous to breaking & entering and/or theft of physical property?

He's saying that since you don't see the FBI running around chasing petty criminals and common burglars, why should they be chasing casual song rippers and kids who download a few songs.

MAKES SENSE, NO?  There's a reason why we have many "tiers" of law enforcement, proportional to the crimes. Also, crimes that represent greater threats to people's personal safety should take priority. It's only common sense, no?

I got a letter from my ISP for "conan the barbarian 1987". apprently they setup trackers so they can catch random people downloading whatever. this was on demonoid where they allowed random public trackers. funniest thing is I actually didnt even watch the movie..just didnt seem interesting..its 20 years old for crying out loud ::)

I dont bother with torrents anymore..I will join netflix and rent whatever online.

i recall hearing that some people in denmark were unexpectedly sent bills for movies they had downloaded. this was before bit-torrents i think...

i think this is it:

http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/news/2002/12/56717

i guess i was wrong about the pre-bit torrent thing though. seemed so long ago...

Sounds like they're after torrents for movies quite a bit more than those for games...interesting, I thought that the gaming industry brought in more money. That's why I was curious in the first place, since all you hear is movies, movies, movies, but maybe it's because that industry's got more lobbyers to push the issue. I can't see why ISP's should care in the first place.

The problem is that he has a back-stabbing ISP. If I ever got a letter from my ISP regarding anything I'd downloaded, I'd be finding a new ISP in a hurry.

Eventually, all ISP's will be like that probably, but for now, not all ISP's will "tell on you" when the RIAA, MPAA, or whatever, comes knocking. Verizon for example has been sued in the past by the RIAA for refusing to give out names of its customers accused of file sharing.

Verizon sends out those letters.  I know many who have received them.  The letter isn't a "we reported you to the RIAA", it's "we saw you downloading stuff they would have interest in, cut that crap out".

I've never gotten a letter from them, and I've had them for an ISP for a few years now. If I ever get one, I'll find a new ISP. They aren't the only game in town.
