How do I make this cut?
« on: November 25, 2007, 07:52:43 pm »
This seems so simple but when I try it I reach such difficulties. I'm making diagonal cuts, for the back angle of the cabinet for example, but I think I've reached the end of my woodworking skills.

Here's an approximation of the cut I'm trying to make:

I have a jigsaw (which I tried adjusting to make a 45 degree angle, but was unable to cut a straight line for the life of me), and a circular saw.

I'm pretty sure everyone must have made a cut like this at some point, so... any tips?

How long is the cut?  I'd use a radial saw if it's less than 12" or my tablesaw if it was longer.  If you only have a circular saw I'd make a sawboard at the same angle you are trying to cut and use it to cut your panel...  check the sticky at the top of this forum for instructions how to make one...

It's 30", I have to make several cuts for this.

I see the sawboard instructions, and I think I understand them, but I'm not sure how I'd make one at a 45 degree angle.

When you are cutting the sawboard to the proper length just use your circular saw set at 45 degrees.

Alternatively.... Use a 45 degree Router Bit..... Run the router along a guide and get it to make the angle for you.

You can use a circulear saw. Set it for 45 and clamp a guide rail next to the cut.  Can even use a 1 x2  and screw it down and use that as your guide rail.

Best bet.

Otherwise youd have to use a table saw.

Agreed.  Just did this recently to replace the bottom of my pole position.
I clamped a piece of wood to the piece I wanted to cut as close to the end as I could and still make a full cut with the circular saw set at 45 degrees.  I then used a saw board to cut it to size at the other end at 90 degrees.
