Need help identifying my monitor
« on: October 26, 2007, 01:40:43 am »
Hi everybody,

I have a 19" monitor that's mounted in my Breakout cocktail cabinet.  The cabinet was converted to a Nibbler sadly enough, but that's beside the point.  The monitor seems to be having some convergence issues.  I'm nearly finished a cap kit (missing about 5 caps that I need to order).  But the picture hasn't changed at all.  Nibbler changes from red to florescent yellow along the right side of the screen.

I've been though the monitor id sites listed in the FAQ and the "Read this First" post.  But I personally haven't had any luck finding a match.

The Tube is a Phillips 19VLBP22 for all that's worth.

Not too much in the way of useful identifying marks.
A stamp in the metal chassis on the right side of the PCB reads 4188501.
A white sticker on the top of the metal chassis, and the Neckboard reads 00828070 another reads "Made In China"   :P
One more white sticker on what I think is the Vertical deflection board reads 07150009  (The last 3 digits are badly smudged, 009 is my best guess)

Is there anybody out there who can tell me what I have?  And more importantly, where I can get the schematics for it?

i remember seeing those on tabletop vids when i first started work in 1986,i don't remember the name of them but i am sure they were used on artek(or similar spelling) cocktail cabs-these date from early 1980's
i particulary remember this chassis as there is a large on/off switch
a photo of the screen problem would to id the actual fault

Well, no on/off switch that I can find.  The big switch on the left side is actually a manual degauss button.

Here's a pic of the actual problem(s).  The cap kit(now complete) cleaned up a lot of issues, this is what's left.

The picture is actually much clearer in real life.

Problems left to deal with:
1.  If you look at the snake, along the right side of the screen, he actually turns from red to Neon yellow along pretty much that whole side  - Fixed with degaussing coil

2. Yellow discoloration in the bottom left corner of the screen - Fixed with degaussing coil

3.  Along the right side of the screen  That scribble is supposed to read from top to bottom "CREDIT 0".  It's totally illegible.

4. Minor color tweaking still needed as well

Do you have any big magnets sitting near the monitor?  Have you tried degaussing?

No magnets aside from the cabinets own speakers.  I'm hoping to go pick up my degausing coil tonight, and give that a go.

The degaussing did some major clean up...I'm impressed how much nicer everything looks.   :applaud: It hasn't fixed the distortion along the right side of the screen though.
After I did the degauss though, I had to adjust the verticle hold as the picture moved a fair bit(What should have been the outer edge was now in the middle of the screen).  The distortion stayed with the word "CREDIT".  I don't know if that makes a difference.

Any ideas what might be going on?

maybe one of the hold pots could sort out the credit
look for a linearity pot for the other problem

Ok.  I'm playing with the pots more or less one at a time.  I'm finding that I need to pick up a non-metallic screwdriver at this point   :banghead:

In the mean time, there are 9 pots on the main board alone...Some I can figure out (H. HOLD, V. HOLD, BRIGHT and V. Size), but can anyone clue me in as to what the others are? +B ADJ, SIDE PCC, ACT ADJ

Also what's the difference between Vertical hold, and Sub hold?  They seem to do pretty much the same thing.   ???

It would be kinda nice to know what I'm supposed to be looking for when I make an adjustment.

Thanks very much for the help thus far.

Ok.  I hope to play with this more this weekend.  The monitor is currently in an old breakout cabinet, but it's definatly not original, so I guess I'll look for this artek(or something similar) to see what I can find.
I also need to mount the chassis properly, as it's currently being suspended under the tube by 4 wires that have been looped around the monitor frame.   :dizzy:  Makes it a bit difficult to get at anything near the back of the board.

Just to give this thread some closure....My monitor is working really nice now, the issue with the Credit text along the right side was fixed with the H. Hold pot.  Now that I've setup a proper shelf to hold the chassis, I could finally get at it without fear of electrocution.   :applaud:

Thanks everyone for your help, now I'm onto the next part of the cabinet repairs.   :banghead:
