I've finally stepped into the console world.
« on: September 28, 2007, 12:00:58 pm »
I picked up a Wii on CL for $200 with excite truck and some other goodies.  Found out that my wife is way better at super mario bros than I am.

This is my newest system since the PS1 that I bought ages ago for $40 from a pawn shop. I still play it and my genesis.

So is there anything special I need to know as a wii owner?  I guess I should look for a copy of MP3.

How is Warioware?

Any other reccomended games?  I know the Wii doesn't have many must haves but It was a good deal and I have to start somewhere.

I actually got a couple of wireless gamecube controllers and went to the local used game shop and picked up a bunch of GC titles for really cheap.  I used gamespot's top rated GC games of all time list and got most of the top rated ones for around $8-$15 each.  I'm still waiting on the Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy games for the Wii (most Wii games aren't really rated very well at the moment) and these GC games are a great prelude so far.

Metroid Prime 3 is a must - so is Zelda: Twilight Princess, in my opinion.

How is Warioware?  Good party game, gets old as a single player game (trust me, I know.  My 4 year old insisted on seeing me play it for several weeks until I got tired of it).
Note this: it's FAR better than Mario Party 8.

While we're on party games, my wife and I actually prefer Rayman: Raving Rabids over both the above....it's a nice party game with  zany cartoon fun.

Super Mario Strikers Charged is pretty good, but as I've said, I have trouble following the actions of the tiny characters....even so, it's good for a quick wi-fi fix.

Though I initially thought it was an ok multi-player, stay the hell away from Wii Play unless you have kids - it's a waste of money.

For single player, Warioware.  Multiplayer, Mario Party.

Loved Zelda.

The three best single player games on the console are Metroid Prime 3, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Paper Mario.

Warioware might be fun as a multiplayer game, but it gets old fast as a single player game.  I would say rent it before you buy it, because you'll play through everything in the single player game with in a few hours.

Good advice thanks,

I went to my local game store and picked up a used wiimote and nunchuck, and five G-cube games, Not bad for a lil'over a hundred bucks.

Metroid prime (the original)
Super monkey ball 2
SW: Rogue Squadron 2
SSX 3
Nascar 2005 chase for the cup.

So far I've only checked out Monkey ball and Metroid prime.  Monkey ball is great as I have kids ages 3 and 8 and this is mostly for them.  I can see why Metroid prime is so highly rated it's a well put together game...but...it's hard for me to sit and play a game like that on a console.  If I have multiple hours to play games I can play Halflife-2 or Battlefield 2 on my PC.  I want games that I don't play as well on a PC...and/or games that I can play for 5-15 minutes.

I had the Wii all weekend and found that I was more likely to pop in the Jakks Plug-n-play for a quick game of Pacman.  (sigh) I am so NOT hard core.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll like the other three games.  Been a while since I've played a good driving/snowbording/starwars game.

Of all the games on the rating list One that I want: Ikaruga, is pretty hard to find.

Oh well perhaps someday...and there's always pacman.

Get used to it.  Seriously.  The Metroid series on the Cube and Wii is fantastically worth it.

Ok, I'm convinced.  I'll keep it around for that rainy day where I can play for a while.

I tried out Star Wars Rogue Leader 2 last night and thought I only played for about 10 minutes I'm in love.  I've wanted to fly around in an X-wing for years now just that I couldn't find an old copy of X-wing vs Tie Fighter.

I also tried out the Nascar 2005 and While it is definatly an awesome game I am too much a noob.  Out of three races I couldn't get higher than 21st place.  :banghead:    Looks like the story elements are great though...I might have to trade this one in though and try something else...

*edit*
Burnout 2 perhaps?

Check out the sequel to that one as well (Rogue Leader 3).  My 4 year old is obsessed with Imperial Walkers/AT-ATs and there is a mission in there where you are on foot, use your grapple to get under its belly, lightsaber the hatch open, and toss in a grenade.

While on the subject, why the hell aren't there any good space combat games on the PC anymore?

I hear ya, I really would love a good space sim in the vein of the first few wing commanders and/or the X-Wing/Tie fighter series with todays graphics.  I'm confidant that Lucas arts will make one eventually...I'm just not 100% sure it'll be good.

and toss in a grenade.

Was it a grenade or a Thermal Detonator? Hmmm...

And back on topic. I'll look out for the third one.

No one here play the Burnout racing games?

okay, before you go buy warioware....rent it first.  lots of people love this game, but.....for me personally.....

warioware is the biggest piece of crap game for the wii.  ive played single player, sucked.  i thought "wait, this is a party game, i need to play with friends".  i had 6 people at my house, and we played.  fun for about 10 minutes.

the game sucks.  its weird, and most of the time you are like "um....what the heck did i just have to do, and why did i do it?".  yeah its funny to see your friends do the hula hoop thing or whatever, but after a few times, its just boring.  i wouldnt even say its a good rental.  only rent it if you are having a party, and plan on only playing it for about an hour with 4 or more people.

i played excite truck in the store and loved it....however not having online, or more than 2 player vs. mode plus only allowing for the two trucks in vs. mode sucks and makes me not want it.  im waiting for excite truck 2.  hopefully that will have online and more than 1 on1 vs.

metroid prime 3 and zelda are must buys.  mario galaxy is coming soon, and of course theres the virtual console, which for the most part i havent downloaded anything....but they just released Sin and Punishment (japanese import with dubbed english) and Super Mario Brothers: Lost Levels (originally smb 2 in japan)....so nintendo is starting, at least i think so, to release games that we may or may not have played before.

Thanks for the tip on Warioware. Renting it sounds like good advice...(though if I buy it used I have 7 days to return it)

I picked up Burnout 2 last night and played it for a bit definatly more my style or actually a bit easy.  Crashing is really fun!  >:D  I then popped in the Nascar game an having read a bit about it online tweakes my car and studied the controls and I found that I had improved alot.  I actually finished 10th in a race. then 22nd and 20th  but I might have to keep ahold of this game for when Burnout seems too easy. LOL.

I also broke down and got a game cube memory card.  I would have thought we could at least save our gamecube files onto a SD card.  Ah well another $14.

As a console noob I am quite aware of how much extra stuff I have to buy to make it worthwhile to play.  Buying the Wii itself was fine but then another wiimote, nunchuck, gamecube controller, gamecube memory card not to mention the games (which I'm more ok with since I would have to buy them anyhow.)  Plus, I'm not anywhere close to being done.  I still need to pick up at least another g-cube controller if I ever want to play 2-player anything and another wiimote or two so eventually my whole family can play together.

I still don't regret it though.  I still havn't spent the MSRP of a 360 or PS3 and I have a pretty ok collection of games to keep me busy.  Granted most of them are years old. (does it matter if I have never seen them?)

Wii played ( ::)) our first family bowling game last night too and it was fun.  Heck...I even think some two player boxing would be a hoot. (my kids are quite animated)

*edit*
BTW: I need to thank whoever it was that suggested using the Wii to watch Youtube videos.  With the zoom feature I can get it to full screen and back easyer than on a PC and the quality is fine on my cheepie TV.

if youve never played gamecube games...might i suggest:

zelda:wind waker
resident evil (remake of the original...awesome game...terrible controls but the game is still still awesome)
resident evil 4 (a MUST BUY)
mario kart double dash
tiger woods golf 05 or above (great golf games for like $10 and they will last you a while if you like golf)

thats all i can think of at the moment...im ill get flamed for leaving out "xyz instant classic".

definitely not. i've just recently bought an N64 and a sega megadrive. and having never played any of the games before am finding that if the game was well designed it doesnt matter what era its from. after all, many of us are here because of an interest in arcade classics...

If its new to you, then its new. ;D
Personally, I prefer to stay a generation behind in gaming. You get the same experience at a fraction of the cost.
After playing at a friends house, I just got into the Medal of Honor games. Now I get to fight WWII in its entirety!

I did break my rule though last month by buying my wife a Nintendo DS. She LOVES that thing. I must admit that it is pretty flippin neat too.

I do that too, but I definitely find, I feel that I'm losing out on network play.  Fortunately network play seems to be primarily for war games I don't play anyway.

I don't think it is very fun to get your ass handed to you right out of the gate in online games. In the past, I thoroughly enjoyed Diablo and Team Fortress Classic online, but it did get to the point there were too many cheaters, and others who were just WAY better than me. The fun games with a bunch of decent players pretty much hit the road.

So no, I don't miss network play at all.

Doesn't playing mostly with a group of folks you know, say the BYOAC folks who happen to be online at a given time, solve that?

Runs into some issues I wasn't motivated enough to solve.  Online gaming with a native console is a lot easier than networked emulators running through firewalls on PCs.

We finally busted out multiplayer gaming in my house... spent a couple hours yesterday playing Mario Party 1 with the kids.  I need to get some new N64 sticks.

If you have an xbox, get Fusion Frenzy. It is the BEST multiplayer minigames themed game out there. I just played it this past weekend with some friends. You will laugh your ass off.

Fusion frenzy is really fun.  When the Xbox first came out my brothers friend brought his over and we played that game all night.

I saw that super smash bros. is coming out (is out) on the Wii.  Should I pick up the 'cube version for $20 or get the Wii version?

*New edit*

It's a sickness I tell you.  :dizzy:
I couldn't stop myself from stopping by the other gamestore and picking up copies of Pikman 2, animal crossing and Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 for the G-cube.  I still want to get another wireless controller but convinced myself I can wait.

In reality I spent $50  for those four games all rated 8 or higher out of 10.  And now I have a variety of things to play.  Hopefully I'm done for a while...

Oh the irony...as I have no time to play games.

just a heads up on replacement sticks. you gave me an ebay link ages ago on my n64 thread and i ordered a stick from them. never received it, and once i started scrolling through his feedback(yes, i know i should probably have done that BEFORE i paid!) i found some similar complaints. managed to get my money back from paypal, AND he got wear my bad feedback to him. first time ive ever given a bad feedback. this is the dude to avoid:    gameznetwork. only started responding to my queries once i set a dispute in motion...

ive just received a stick from these guys on ebay:    gameliquidation

seems to be fine, although its not claimed to be new. its getting a damn good thrashing on goldeneye at the moment. i seem to recall someone saying 1080 will really test it out so ill do that between sniping sessions  ;)

Yeah, those "extreme sports" games that have tons of rotations really beat the crap out of the stick.  I'd stay away from them... there are better examples on consoles with better analog sticks.

Thanks for the heads up on that seller.  I'll heed that warning.
