Not sure if anyone is into Rally, but looks like we may have lost one of the most talented drivers of our generation in a helicopter crash. They also believe his 5 year old son along with two other unnamed people were killed in the accident.

He IS dead.

An awesome talent and a driving force in trying to get Rally racing popular in the states.

Bummer.

Wow, bad news. I really loved his driving when he was for Subaru in the WRC. You always knew something was going to happen when he went out to make up time or extend his lead. Either he would be flying, setting incredibly fast times or he would wrap the car round a tree or dump it in a ravine. Either way he was good for some incredibly exciting racing. The WRC never had much appeal to me after he left (/was kicked out).

Went to see if there is a condoleance list (or whatever it's called in english), but they put his website on black ...

Not much news on how and why his helicopter went down.

Just read that David Richards (Colin McRae's former boss) also found himself in a helicopter "crash". He wanted to fly home from the Formula 1 race because of Colin McRea's death. Luckily he managed to get his helicopter down sort of safely though and survived.

That's just too bizarre. Two people from the old Subaru team suffering helicopter malfunctions.  :o

BTW the site is back up with a few short messages and a condolences register

He was one of the reasons I got interested in Rally racing (I still don't understand why people prefer to watch NASCAR over here).

I can't handle kids dying like that.  It makes me physically ill to think about.  How can his wife even respond to life right now?  How is she supposed to even function under a load like that.  It would crush you into paste.
