John Madden
« on: September 06, 2007, 09:44:51 pm »
Just listening to him tonight i really think he should stop doing games and give us all a break already. I don't know if i can go another season listening to him mumble and keep saying the stupid things he always ends up saying as games go by.

The only thing is that he has been around for so long and is so respected i don't think anyone will ever tell him he should give up announcing and quit but he really needs to hear that from someone sometime soon.

I think it might be the beer. We have a local Ace Hardware commercial and he is perfectly understandable.

Yeah, it sucks when you have a guy who actually knows what the hell he's talking about.  It's so much better when you have dumbasses like Tony Kornheiser who wouldn't know a football from a bag of ---meecrob---.   ::)

Madden is the best there is and has been for a long time.

Hey, they could always go get Dennis Miller again. ;D

Really though, they should just cut out the middle man and hire Frank Caliendo to do Monday night football. :laugh2:

I take it all back. I now think Madden is doing a fine job after hearing him say Eli Manning is a good player after the colts win.  ;D

Yeah, but in doing so, he said the rest of the Giants suck. ;D

In our family, he's referred to as "fat madden."

I'm with tommy. *shudder*

Chad, as a fan, do you like being told what holding is five times in a row, after watching a clip three times in a row, where he rewinds and fast forwards, RW, FF, RW FF over and over again?

Do you like hearing him explain four times how the guy (blatantly-we couldn't miss it) jumped offsides in four nearly exact ways, while doing the same damn thing with the video:  FF, RW, FF, etc?

Some people just don't recognize when their career is over, and hold on for dear life, while nobody's got the balls to tell them otherwise, as tommy said.  Players do it too.
I'll exercise patience when you stop exercising stupidity.

So you enjoy listening to a guy like Kornheiser ---smurfette--- in the fourth quarter about how player X only has 80 yards and is hurting his fantasy team?  I'd rather hear a hundred explanations from a super bowl winning coach than a single complaint from a pinheaded sportswriter.

Well chad, i get the idea that you can't stand Kornheiser and that's fine. He's not the only other announcer, so i don't know why you're bringing him into this argument. Is it Madden or Kornheiser and that's it? Those two guys are the only option for the rest of the season?   :dunno

The way your argument sounds is that if you're against Madden you must love Kornheiser or some strange thing like that.

I dislike any 3 men in the booth scenario from The original MNF lineup on. Too many cooks and whatnot...

That said, Madden should have hung it up when Summerall retired. He really has become self parody. He's not the worst NFL commentator though. Bryant Gumbel has that one sewn up nicely.

How many of you guys have the NFL Sunday Ticket and watch a lot of the "network B and C games"?  Those are the games that they put the crappier teams on - stuff like the Lions and Raiders.  The B and C teams are horrible.  They make Gumble look like a freakin genius.

He is very technical, which from what I'm told by people who haven't any playing experience, can put them off.  They don't understand what he's talking about.  I like it myself as I do get it.  Wish Aikman had more charisma, though, he's like listening to bad technical training.

I like Madden though I admit he has gotten more "mumbley" (is that a word) in recent years.  I think it's the fat on his neck preventing him from speaking clearly or perhaps its the Alzheimer's kicking in?   In any case I also agree that it's about time that Madden considers retirement...

...that said...the guy is a legend and damnit,  if he wants to mumble through a couple more years of football games,  I say SCREW IT...let him!  He's done more for football thank damn near anyone else ever has.

I hate hate hate hate the commentators that go on a lovey dovey tirade of hero worship about certain players.  I think Vick was always the worst for that - I used to refuse to watch Falcons games specifically because the announcers would spend 75% of the game talking about how great Vick was... now that he's gone Peyton Manning seems to have taken all of that bandwidth making the Colts games unwatchable.

The anti-Cowboys guys like to tell you how horrible every play was in execution, even if the Cowboys are up 21 points.  "Ugly pass, terrible punt, lousy block"

I don't really watch NFL anymore, and I never really watched other teams, so I'm no expert, but it sure seemed like some commentators had a deep seated hatred.

Well you'll be happy to know that all of the commentators are loving Tony Romo so much that he has to keep a water bottle with him to get them off his leg. ;)

I think he means, why on earth would someone complain about John Madden when there are clueless, annoying, and inept announcers like Kornheiser around.  I can barely stand to watch Monday night football anymore.  And the play by play guy (don't know his name) isn't much better.  It kills me how his voice crackles like a kid hitting puberty when he tries to call an exciting play.
Whatever happened to Mike Patrick, who used to do Sunday night football with Theisman and Maguire?  I always thought he was a great play by play announcer and now he's seemingly vanished.

I agree about Mike Patrick - he was great.  I think the current Monday night football booth is t3h suxxorzz.

Back when TNT got half the Sunday night games (and ESPN got the 2nd half), I thought they had a really good announe team, graphics, and coverage.  This was probably 15 years ago or so, but I still remember it.

While we're on the topic of NFL television, I must say that the FOX pregame show really lost a lot when James Brown went back to CBS.  Joe Buck is waaaaay better than the guy who sits on the far left yesterday, but I don't like it when they do the pregame show outside at a stadium.

On the flipside, Mushmouth (Shannon Sharpe) makes it impossible to watch the CBS pregame show.   I like the ESPN pregame show, but there is a lot of garbage in 2 hours.  I usually watch ESPN from 11AM EST until Noon EST and then switch to FOX, although the FOX show just isn't as fun.

I'm rambling now, but I actually liked the FOX show better when James Brown was the host, Chris Collinsworth was there instead of Jimmy Johnson, and Jimmy Kimmel provided comic relief instead of Frank Caliendo.  Howie Long doesn't add much, but he intimidates the other guys which is fun sometimes.

I think I watch too much NFL coverage.  :P

IMHO Shannon Sharpe is too concerned with how he looks in his slick ass suite and tie...dude has so little to contribute to the conversation.

heck yeah. I don't tivo, but I have the comcast DVR.  Nothing better than waiting until 1/2 time and starting the game from the DVR, FFW thru the BS commentary, commercials, boring stuff,  and 1/2 time and "catch up" to live coverage by the 4th quarter.   8)

They put the obnoxious scumbag players on the pregame shows?  WTF?  Keyshawn.  He sucks.   Nice pink shirt and green tie.

I'm up ready at 11am.  I might not be listening, but the pregame is on.   I have no pregame to watch now.

I think on directv Steve Sabol had a pregame show.  I might have to go to that snorefest.
