True Story:

I went out to lunch today with an old friend and he relates a story from his wife (who works as an attorney in child care cases).

She's representing a family with two young daughters:  Melody and Absidy.

Absidy she thinks... that's an unusual name. 

Then she sees how it's spelled: "Abcde".


Another One:

My wife used to work as a school teacher in a low income district.  A lot of the kids had unconventional names.  The two most interesting were twin brothers whose names sounded like they would be spelled:  Orangelo and Lemongelo.

Actual spelling:  OrangeJello and LemonJello

African-American woman naming her daughter ---sufferer of cranial-rectal-inversion--- (pronounced "Shateed")

My wife did a stint as a retail Pharmacist while she was finishing up her degree. Filled a prescription for Umajesty, pronounced "you Majesty".

Best part: Last name Smith.

She still sees the occasional odd name, but 8 years later, that one is still her favorite.

We had one guy in high-school who's name was Anil, but with his thick accent he pronounced it Anal.

I was also going through a baby name registry from some county a while back and there was a kid named something like "Dubble Lovebirdd XX Princess BabeeLUV Shalawndra"

Also have a friend who named her daughter Dibenhi which is meant to stand for  DIos Bendiga Nuestra  HIja  (God Bless our Daughter in Spanish).

My wife once worked for a collection agency and one of the contacts she had to call was named Female. The lady pronounced it the same way you would pronounce Tamale.

I went to high school with a girl with the last name Oder. Her fathers name was Richard.

He was ALWAYS being called to the office. Sheesh, you think with that name, he would have learned to keep a low profile.

I had a Cuban Blackjack dealer (His name tag did indeed say Jose) tell me a variation of that one in Vegas. The punchline is even funnier with the accent.

I used to road race bicycles and one of the announcers was named Dick Ring.

I heard another one from a friends mother that worked in an inner city school.  After the woman had her baby, they asked her what she wanted to name her.  After looking around the room where they had many heath safety posters she said "yeah, that's it, I'm going to call her gonoria"

The nurses had to talk her out of naming the kid after the STD gonorrhea.

There was a Richard Head in my class in high school.  I personally know someone named Candy-Apple, with the hyphen and everything.  I knew her for years as Candy before finding out.  She has a middle name, too, but I don't remember it, and her last name is Earnst, so it's unremarkable.  I also called a woman when I was telemarketing named Anita Hooker, but I chalk that up to being funny, but likely not real.  For one thing, she wasn't home.  My guess is that someone just used bogus information when filling out one of those forms you see at the mall to enter a sweepstakes to win a car or something, and she ended up on a calling list.  Damned funny if it is real.  Kinda funny if not.

My mother was head nurse of OBGYN for 20 years.  She once had to convince a woman not to name her daughter Placenta.  The woman didn't speak English, however she saw it written somewhere and thought it sounded pretty.

The best name actually given a newborn while she was there: Walla Walla Buffalo Woman Lorenzo.

I met a Homer Simpson in college.  Poor dude was born before the show was created.

Years ago I worked at a bank and a woman came in to withdraw money.  When I asked her to sign her name, she drew a really cute picture of flowers, a tree, a sun, and a hill in the background.  Her driver's license had the same picture on it.
Maybe Prince got his idea from her.
