Best/cheapest 27" monitor?
« on: August 18, 2007, 09:57:39 pm »
I'm looking to upgrade the 21" monitor I have in my project cab at the moment.  I'm 17, and working on a budget, so cheaper would be nice, but I also don't want to buy a POS accordingly.  Suggestions?

Read my thread :)

Call your local TV stations, video post-production studio, freelance video editors, etc... A ton of perfectly fine monitors with RGB (etc) are being dropped at the dump due to the digital / lcd craze.

good luck!

I didn't mean a TV - what I got (and I'm almost sure there are more out there) is literally a monitor. It shows the correct pixel aspect at lower resolutions, etc.
Good luck.

Well my budget isn't like under 100, I can dish out the 500 or so for a new WG or Happ monitor, I'm just trying to find a decent arcade monitor in the 300-500 dollar price range.  I might have misused the word budget ;)

For that money you could get a multisync like a Betson or Billabs.  I can't see spending that much on a VGA only monitor anyway (unless it's replacing a dedicated VGA game's monitor).  To me the whole point of an arcade monitor is to run the games at their correct native resolutions -- and probably 95% of arcade games use CGA resolutions.

You should also heed ARTIFACT's advice.  An RGB presentation monitor like he just scored is essentially an arcade monitor.

right.

i almost posted something about the vga only limitation, but not being an expert, i prefered not to confuse you. that is a huge limitation, i agree.

you should read the monitor faq thread - i did and it enlightened me on the subject.

good luck and dont rush your decisions... plan and research a ton. i had to return joysticks i ordered because i didnt doule efforts on researching all the models available and their differences.

read the wiki and all faqs

Not to Hijack the thread, but I'm researching for my first cabinet (doing it for years now) and wanted to know what kind of questions I need to ask to when calling about said freebie monitors.

Also are they BNC type connectors or is ti something else?

Thanks,

Revbob

Yes, you did. ;) If you can afford to throw $300-$500 at  an arcade monitor at 17, you don't even know what a "budget" means.

Anyways, GGG used to stock a 29" presentation monitor that is rgb capable for $275 shipped. I'm not sure on the status of new stock though. It might be worth an email to Randy to see.

Well I get paid to write PHP scripts and edit videos, so I'm well paid.  I also don't drive or pay taxes at the moment so I had a fairly nice cash flow.

The ex-TV studio RGB presentation monitors certainly kick arse.

I'm lucky enough to have been able to find several Sony 27" professional video monitors by monitoring local classifieds like a hawk.  Sometimes people simply don't realise the value of the items.

These things cost more than $5000 new in 2000.  They were worth it because the picture is so sharp and the colours so bright and clear (Super-trinitron tube helps).  In fact, they still are worth it because modern LCD & plasma still isn't actually as good as CRT technology for things like colour depth and potentially "infinite focus" of CRTs vs "blockiness" of LCD screens.   But everyone now has flat-screen fever.

Actually, I think that some people in the A/V industry and related service sectors are starting to realise the advantages of CRTs, and prices for good quality CRT TVs and video monitors may even start to go up in price.

Check out my completed projects!
