"Official" settings of games for records ?
« on: August 13, 2007, 03:44:50 pm »
I just wondered, what are the "official" settings for getting (world) records on games ? I wonder because I visited Darth Nuno's lair about a week ago and naturally he beat me on Galaxian  :banghead:
Well, I of course defended myself, saying it wasn't the same thing to play Galaxian on mame or on the real PCB, and that his joystick was feeling a bit different (mmmm, that's a poor choice of words I guess  :D :D) and also the button felt a bit different, and that his settings were different from mine (which only effects the number of ships and when you get a bonus of course, not difficulty in this case).

Anyway, since there are also different rom versions, is there someone deciding what is "official" ?

i'd just like to see how much I suck compared to the world record holders

Yes, it's the best place and is official.  Each game has official dip switch settings for each game and it's interesting to see what the high score to beat is.  They keep scores for many different types of games, including consoles and pinballs as well.  This site motivated me to go for high score in Omega Race.:)  There is a message board as well.  You can find out what to need to submit your score.  It's pretty simple and your score does not have to be #1 to be registered.

Mmm. .strange, they only list a dip setting for Galaxian, but not a ROM version.

Anyway, I guess I can set-up mine for 7000 pts. and 3 ships...

Thanks guys, now I will go and practice the rest of my life.......

If I need to take a nap, I just play thru the 1st level of galaxian. That game is so slow that it never fails to put me to sleep. :P ;D

They've been around since 1981.  I guess you've been busy playing.  :o  :P

Most of the time they just list ONE version of the rom.  That version would be the parent, not a clone or one that would be bug fixed and generally considered "the one to use."

It's amazing... I can play Galaxian endless too ;-)

Great Bruno :)

Indeed it was a close call, but the high score on your machine is way more then I ever got.

You would rank 8th on the MAME scoring if you'd submit !

Looking forward to the pics... :D

P.S. My cab has the very first Namco roms

Also check out MARP.  You can submit scores there as well.

http://marp.retrogames.com/

Look on the top for different sections.  This site keeps scores for all different rom versions and clones.  :applaud:   :woot  I submitted my score for Delta Race there (Australian version of Omega Race).  You may not have all the high scores from Twingalaxies, but MARP is fun as well.

Honestly, I didn't pay attention to time, but I would guess around 4+ hours.  You can download a playback of both scores from TwinGalaxies.

Yeah, indeed amazing !!

Well, I've got some news for Twin Galaxies:

If their policy is running the FIRST rom versions, then they made a mistake with Galaxian.

My cab has the first Namco roms (version09s0), and it won't allow you to set the bonus ship to 7000. 5000 is the max :D

Does that mean I've got the official world record now ?;)

The extra ship score would be just for reference and would not affect playability and the high score.  Submit your findings to one of the refs in arcade section (just posting a thread there will work as well).  They will have to do some research to confirm it.
