I'm holding out at least until the next gen chip set (65nm process) becomes a reality. I'm hoping that change will reduce the number of 360 failures. 3 year warranty or not, I really dislike when my electronics break down, especially if I have to ship it away to get it repaired. Hopefully the price drop will hold, even when the next revision comes along.

Yep.

Once the new chipset launches, I will pick up my 3rd. :)

[Edit]

To clarify... I bought one at launch. It died in Feb 07.

I bought one to replace it.

I learned of the x-clamp fix.

I now have 2 working ones (well my son now has his own rather).

Bought one for the kiddies, my collection stays seperate from thiers.  I'm holding out for the 65nm version in hopes that they squelsh some of the ungodly fan noise.  It has to be the noisiest console ever made!
Please!  Give me the good news first!

Ive already got my elite, so I dont need to buy another. I sold my premium with HD at a loss just to get rid of it.....

Ive never had any problems with either.... I havent noticed this much talked about "heat issue" and I cant hear the fan over the dolby digital 5.1 surround sound.  :dunno

I hope you don't have to have any worries about that much talked about "heat issue", but just know that it isn't just some random blabbering of a few guys online.

It is an actual 360 design issue (not an issue of bad manufacturing, but of actual design) that all current 360's suffer from, and is the reason that MS has extended all 360 warranties to 3 years for the Red Ring of Death.

So far no official release date. Current rumors say before the end of the year.

I'm probably picking one up even without the price drop.  Seems my solderless-chip modded Xbox didn't survive the move (figures) and I want to be able to play my old titles (as well as some nice new ones I've been interested in).

I know, it has to do with the Xclamp. but more often then not, if you take care of your stuff it tends to last longer. I have my 360 in a well ventilated area and while it doesnt undo the flaw in the Xclamp design it certainly doesnt hurt.

Heh.

I have never. I repeat... NEVER had a console fail on me before. Not my Atari 2600, NES, Sega Master System, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PSX, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gameboy, GB Pocket, GB Color, GBA, Neo Geo Pocket Color, or DS.

I take excellent care of all my systems. My 360 is very well ventilated, and has nary breathed but a spec of dust (little exaggeration there of course, but it has been kept superbly clean).

It was the first console I have ever had die in my 20+ years of owning gaming consoles.

There was no warning, and it had been working fine since launch. Then, sometime in March of this year, I finished up playing some worms online with a friend, turned the system off and went to bed. The next day I went to turn it on, and... ... ... ...

The 360 doesn't care how much you love it. It doesn't care how well you care for it. It is designed to hurt you. When you least expect it it will just stab you in the heart and then flash an evil red eye of death, all the while laughing menacingly at you poor unsuspecting broken soul.

:(

Good luck to you. If your warranty is broken, know that the X-clamp replacement fix truly does work. If it isn't broken, then I'd actually be hoping for a failure while it is still covered. :)

I've had a few girlfriends that sound just like that. At least the games they played were better than anything I've seen on the 360 thus far.  ;D

This doesn't even make sense.  You sold your 360 premium at a loss just to get rid of it, but you never had any problems with it?  If you wanted the bigger hard drive . . . okay, I can see a huge 360 fan planning to download HD content wanting to sell the old and get the new, but you sold the old "just to get rid of it."?  And then you bought another Xbox 360?

I actually just had a similar experience with my Wii.  Worked great since launch, but then I didn't play it for about a month (although connect24 was on) and I just tried to play it the other day and now when I start a game it essentially turns off and freezes with on a black screen, I have to unplug it to reset it.  It happens with Wii, Gamecube, and even virtual console games.  Luckily its still under warranty, so I shouldn't have a problem getting it fixed.  And for the record, my original Nintendo that I bought when I was a kid still works, along with every other console console I've owned, something just randomly broke on the Wii (I've heard having connect24 on can overheat the system and cause some damage, so I'll be turning that off once its fixed).

I'm not trying to compare the 360 failure rate to the Wii's, I just wanted to tell someone that my Wii is broken, so it's hard to feel like a real man right now   :P

Its makes sense. You always sell used things at a loss, if I could convince someone to buy my 360 premium for what I paid for it a year and a half ago, then Im in the wrong business.  I got the elite for both the bigger HD and more importantly the HDMI cable, its the only way to watch HD DVDs in 1080p. I didnt drop almost 3 grand on a 61 flat panel lcd hdtv to not get the best picture possible. Also, the black looks cooler, thats why I sent the guy my extra white recharge pack and wire, and a call of duty 2 face plate.

And yes I sold it to get rid of it, why would I need 2 XBOX 360s?!?!

Versapak: I didnt mean to imply that the Xclamp failure was the end users fault or that taking care of it would negate the defect; I was only saying that I  have taken exceptional care of mine and I feel that has contributed to the lack of issues with it.

My major problem with the 360 failure isnt the failure itself, but the tons of people who claim it happened to them who dont even own a 360. Also, you never had a Playstation 2 fail on you? I treated mine like a god and the laser died.....

twice. oh and I went through 3 or 4 PSPs in the store before I finally got one with less then a dozen "stuck pixels" But thats a moot point, the PSP has without a doubt the worst software support since N-gage and Atari Jaguar

The 360 fails at such a rate (some 30% failure rate was reported) that the company wrote off $1 BILLION (with a B) in expectation of warranty fixes for the console.

Sorry, but that expense isn't to cover those "who claim it happened to them who don't even own a 360".  There is a very legitimate design flaw that is causing very REAL failures.  You shouldn't try to minimize it by acting like it's sony fanboys that are making the issue seem worse.

I'm happy you haven't had issues with yours, but chances are actually pretty good you're going to awake one day to a dead system.  Your best hope is it happens within the 3 year warranty period

I dont think anyone is reading what Im typing.  :dunno

I know theres an estimated 30% failure rate, I know its real, I know it happens. M$ is actually trying to fix it. It has not happened to me (perhaps I am lucky enough to stay in the good 70% twice) What I dislike is people lying and saying they have a failed 360 when they've never owned one. Not claiming anyone here is doing that but if you ever go to the sludge pit known as gamefaqs.com message boards........... you'll understand my frustration.

PS2 lasers dying/not reading was a wide spread issue and SONY did jack about it, PSPs with dead pixels is an even wider spread issue (an estimated 85% of PSPs have the flaw that SONY refers to a "manufacturing flaw that there is nothing they can do about") and SONY has done jack about it, so M$ has a design flaw and they are spending a billion dollars to fix it and they are still the  buttholes? Seriously, any company who issues refunds for repairs and extends warrenties because they discover a problem is this bad are seriously some major buttholes.

I digress. I'll play my 360 and hope it never dies but if it does sometime between now and when I turn 31 I know M$ will fix it and I'll only have to pay to ship it to them, the buttholes.

A 30% Failure rate (of any product, by any manufacturer) should be fixed with a recall, not an extended warranty. Hence I await a redesign that demonstrates better reliability.

I didn't say anything about MS being the bad guy. I love my 360, and as mentioned I own 2 of them already.

I am just pointing out that it is a failure that is likely to happen to you. It has nothing to do with how well you take care of yours system, unless taking care of your system has involved you replacing the x-clamps and installing a better cooling system.

As for MS taking  care of things with a 3 year warranty... Good for them that they are owning up to the existence of the problem. It is just going to suck for anyone who's 360 decides to fail after 3 years, because it will still be MS' fault.

It should have been a recall.

This just in....

The newer 65nm chip which the company produces for Microsoft went into production over the last two quarters

The 65nm chip should at a store near you in the next couple weeks at best.  This of course depends on stores current wharehouse stockpile.  The only thing that I have been able to find on the net to identify a "Falcon" 65nm chip is by the production date of 07-01-07 or later.  Does anyone know of a better way to identify the 65nm chip?

I have seen the same as you spruce. Those with a manufacture date of july have the new chips in them. The various xbox forums are saying the elites are your best chance. They make far few of those in advance. It appears it could take months before the premiums have them they have made such a large supply in advance.

I can't see how anyone can take a chance and buy a 360 at this point. Maybe in 5 more years it will be reliable when bought new. Over $350.00 is not something i'm wiling to roll the dice with.

Who buys something knowing it has a very good chance of just dieing on you and you will end up wasting your money? Not me.

Having a thread named who is getting a 360 when the price drops and then saying i would not buy a 360 because it has too big of a chance to break is not a derailed thread.

Not at all.  People frequently buy things they know won't be reliable all that long.  Even big things like cars.

You got some serious problems there man. If you feel like starting a fight with someone, walk outside your front door and punch the nearest guy who walks by you.

I could be wrong, god knows i have been in the past but from what i have seen in the xbox forums they started putting a fix in systems in june for the red ring of death. basically a fix to the xclamp problem.  It is a larger different heatsink wich you can actually see witout taking off the cover as it uses heatpipes.

while the newer chips run a bit cooler the new heatsinks are what really helps.

for me, the price drop isn't considerable enough to warranty a purchase. Dropping the Elite by $30 doesn't justify it for me.

They should have done away with the core, dropped the Premium to $299, and the Elite to $399. I MIGHT HAVE considered it then.

And the premiums apparently are now shipping with HDMI out as well. Procrastination does have some benefits. I can put this off a while longer and the 360 will be everything I want it to be, at the price I will be happy to pay for it.  ;D

I really hope Sony gets their act together.  I want to want a PS3.  I really do.  For some reason something about the Xbox 360 has just rubbed me the wrong way.  I can't really explain it, but I just find myself not wanting to own one.  But the damned thing just keeps getting better and better.  I have virtually no chance of getting either system any time soon.  They'll have to get down below the $200 pricepoint before I can even hope to get one, and even then my only chance is a Christmas or b-day present.  But, if Sony doesn't shape up by then I may just find myself getting a 360 afterall.

I can't see how anyone can take a chance and buy a 360 at this point. Maybe in 5 more years it will be reliable when bought new. Over $350.00 is not something i'm wiling to roll the dice with.

I hope you dont own an ipod then.

It's not a rumor anymore. It has been reported all over the place.

If you look at the retail box, the ones that include HDMI will actually say so in the features list.
