Sega Outrunners Driving cab...[Planning Stage]
« on: July 27, 2007, 04:56:15 pm »
Last year, I aquired a free Sega Outrunners Dual sit-down driving cab. It was complete except the monitors were missing. I was told that there might have been some graphical issues with the board as well.
My original plan was to cut it in half and make it a single person sit down cab (for space issues) and use a modded Xbox loaded with driving games in it.
I've now been considering leaving it as a dual sit down and keeping it in the garage where it will fit.
I need some direction as far as what I should do as far as 2 PC's vs 2 modded Xboxes. If I go with PC's, should I set them up for MAME driving games, or just regular PC driving games and have them networked?
Is mame even capable of having multi-screened driving games?
I plan to use TV's for the display since they are relatively cheap and available in the larger size of the Outrunners cab.

Any ideas/input/suggestions?

Thanks

Go with two Xbox setups.  There are a lot more driving games for it and it will cost much less.  Plus you can mod the xboxes and get MAME driving games on it as well.

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas.
Also, thanks for posting the link to that thread. It was an inspiration to get going on my project. I already have one modded Xbox, so I can at least get half of my cab going. Too bad Outrunners doesn't split into separate cabs like Daytona.

I'd go with the Xbox.  Mine boots in about 16 seconds (not 30 - 90 for a PC).  It networks with my other Xbox with no problems at all.  No drivers to mess with.  They were made to hook up to TV's, the games just work (no messing with configuration, drivers, version'itis), etc. etc. etc.

I play the snot out of mine.  Check my thread on the Xcelerator below if interested in my Xbox driving cab build.  One of these days I'll finish the side art and call it done.

Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the response Coder. I've read your thread more times than I care to say and got a lot of useful info from it, thanks.
I think I will go with a couple Xboxes...now I just have to see if I can fit the beast in the house once I finish it. Unfortunately, the dual Outrunners cab does not separate into 2 cabs.

Also, are there any tricks to restoring the plastic "seat covers" that go over the wood frame on these cabs? Mine are pretty cracked and weathered. I was hoping I could epoxy the cracks and maybe get away with painting them with that plastic spray paint.
