What N64 games are good on a cab ?

Bearing in mind the weird N64 controller doesn't translate well to a "standard" joystick and 6 button cp setup - what N64 games translate well to the cab ?

Early on I had a huge collection of N64 roms but found I didnt play any as most seemed unplayable without the proper pad and I deleted them !

I seem to remember Mario Karts 64 worked well - any others ?

Id go with most of the racers wipeout 64,f-zero x,ridge racer 64,california speed and so on.. the controlls are fairly basic for racers mainly, but mk4 doom and turok you might just get away with or you could just map the right side joystick for the c buttons but that would elimate 2player n64 is a fecker for a cab.

Super Mario 64 could work, seeing as you really only "need" 4 buttons to play it.  Same with Super Smash Brothers if you only assign 1 jump button, but you can jump by pressing up anyways.  If you map the C buttons to a second joystick you could play most, if not all, platformers, but you might end up juggling two joysticks while needing to hold down another button.

I used a Xbox 360 controller on my cabinet to play N64 games.  It works fairly well.  You can also get an adapter to hook up an original controller to the pc.

I agree personally I have the adaptoid which comes in and out of production... if you come across one I highly recommend picking one up. http://www.ztnetstore.com did have them id send them an email  also was available at jandaman.com they pop up on ebay everyonce and a while but can get expensive

Thanks for the heads up guys. I am trying to avoid adding any more console pads as I already have 2 Playstation2 dual shocks pads, 2 lightguns and a Guitar Hero controller hooked up And yes it looks a mess !

None.... N64 games need analog controls to play properly, period, end of story.  Unlike the ps1, n64 games always had an analog stick to play with and thus they were always designed with the stick in mind.  Playing them on digital arcade controls is like playing arcade games on a keyboard.  Buy a n64 (or use a n64 pad) or don't play them.

The only exception is mk trilogy... it doesn't use any analog controls.  Enjoy that one game.

Yes you are probably right but I'm not looking for 100% authentic here. I do remember playing Mario Karts 64 and thinking it was pretty good - bu then I play all racing games on my cab with digital sticks.

I suppose my question should have been what n64 games have people played on their cab that plays pretty well!

That's a great point, if you get 49-way or analog arcade joysticks the console games become very playable.  I haven't used them personally, but from what I understand they work amazingly well.  They work so well I'm considering upgradilng my sticks!  The only issue with n64 games, in particular is the z trigger, which is often used on simple games like mario kart and mario 64... you'd just about have to make a custom, top-fire analog joystick.

There's really nothing so special about the Z-Trigger that you can't map it to a standard button.  A lot of times it's either to shoot in 1st person shooters, or it takes the place of the Left shoulder button (since when you're using the analog stick, you're no where near the left side of the controller).

You're probably right about that.  But off the top of my head the games I'm thinking wouldn't be completely ruined by having to use your right hand with the Z.  A trigger stick of some sort would be better though if it's N64 is your cup of tea - but not worth the trouble, IMO, if you're going to play a couple of games here and there.

And that's why I just play console games on a television.  The excess buttons and time investment required for the latest console games don't translate well to an arcade cabinet (except for fighters and the occasional twitch shooter).
