Finished my vintage living room.
« on: July 10, 2007, 04:44:14 am »
After recently having a date that went well enough that an actual woman saw my apartment I decided to redo the whole living room.

So I went around to the thrift shops with a few female friends and these are the results. Note, almost nothing in these pictures was in my living room before other than the cocktail table and the flat TV. I didn't even have a couch.

Budget was about $200, $300 if I count that Gorf mame.

Also, the giant couch doesn't look quite so "grandma" in person, the flash was making it look different.

We picked out creepy pictures on purpose.

Except for the LCD and the Gorf machine, we have completely opposite tastes. All you need to do is put a plastic cover on the coach and we'd be in that 70's show's living room.  ;)

Oh thank god I wasn't the only one that looked at that and thought "holy crap that's creepy".

Dude, last time we saw you wanted to get a woman you bought a scooter and a motor home.  This time you're decorating your apartment intentionally creepy?  Why?

Trust us on this - even if your taste thinks creepy is kind of funny - women don't like creepy.  Especially from an older single guy they don't know well.  Few things will get them out of your apartment faster than creepy.

Very disturbing!  I can't imagine any woman spending more than 2 minutes in that apartment.  And that 2 minutes will be spent in complete fear.

I'd say that's almost definitely a juke, yeah.

You know, I hate most of it, but think the couch would actually be pretty sweet if it was reupholstered.

They can't be any worse than the 2x4s inside my couch that, after only two years of fairly gentle use, are already trying to pop through the back.  Never again, Bob's Discount Furniture.  Never again.

my actual opinion

the couch I actually like, big, looks like it could be comfortable.  I would get rid of one of the coffee tables, less is more, there is nothing wrong with being able to walk more than 5 feet without running into something.

I don't understand the TV on a TV, I get the retro TV, that's great, but that is a lot of area taken up for nothing, and having a TV on top of your broken TV is a little Trailer parkish to me.

And if you really want to get women to spend more than 2 minutes in your apartment, GET RID OF THOSE PICTURES, they go beyond creeping me out.

But that is just me, maybe this fits you and your friends, if so more power to you.    So.... whatever floats your boat I guess.

Can't have a grill inside!

Just last night I was reading the 'Summer Storm Safety' sheet that the town Light and Power mailed out.  Among "have flashlights" and "unplug major appliances" in the event that power goes out, they threw in "do not grill indoors".  At first, I couldn't understand who would do that.  Now I do.

The hotel of an uncle of mine was burned down because someone was cooking on an open fire inside. The hotel was used to house refugees from Africa and they didn't know how to use the stove so they made a fire to cook on.

I guess they couldn't read the "do not grill indoors" warning :P

The presence or absence of a woman does not necessarily dictate wood.  I bet that flatscreen sees much porn.

It does help, though.

Paige, I am willing to travel and I DEMAND an invite to your next party.  That HAD to be quite a bender to cause the 70's to throw up that violently all over your living room

Also, considering painting the whole room orange. I am not supposed to paint in my apartment, but the place has been bought and sold since I moved in, and the present absentee landlord has never even seen the place. Plus the existing paint/walls are in terrible condition and would need to be repainted when I left anyway.

But, I got the apartment $100 cheaper a month than usual due to the poor condition of the carpet and paint, that has saved me $6000 so far, and I might still live there for years to come, so a little bit of money to paint, and then paint back white when I move will be well worth it.

Also, the giant couch doesn't look quite so "grandma" in person, the flash was making it look different.

We picked out creepy pictures on purpose.

A little retouching can do wonders for those creepy thrift store pics.  For example, this one hangs on the bathroom wall out in my gameroom:

Leave the poor guy alone with his "womenz" problems, with taste like that, he's got far far more issues to deal with first.  :)

Seriously, 40's style is cool as is 30's and 50's... you've got a really creepy late 60's early 70's thing going on there.  The problem with that is all things from that era looked awful (probably due to all the drugs) and nobody ever looked back once the 80's came along.

Looks like a DrWho episode to me. The one where the medical nanobot ship crashes during a bomb raid on London during WWII.

Actually I think the ugliest period/type of furniture is that late 70s/early 80s western type stuff with the thick wood frames and the coarse material on it. And almost anything newer than that falls apart if you touch it, unless you spend a fortune on it.

After recently having a date that went well enough that an actual woman saw my apartment I decided to redo the whole living room.

To hell with decorating the living room. What really matters is having a decorated bedroom, bathroom and having a sturdy kitchen table. At least, thats all that matters with the girls I date.

No way!

That picture of the mother and daughter that's above the TV was in my house over my couch when I was growing up in the 70's.  Like an oil painting or something.  I wonder if it's the same one?  Maybe it was just popular back in the midwest - my mom brought it with her from across the river in Woodriver, IL when she moved out to Cali.

There was a second picture in the same genre that was up there too.

What the deuce?? Is that my juke there? Mom better not've thrown out Grandmas jukebox.

Now I do.

Funny story about that. I used to work at The Home Depot in the returns department. Do you want to take a guess at how many people would return their BBQ's for that reason?

I don't know who is at the bottom of the IQ rope, people who try to use their BBQ indoors or that mother who bought her six year old a new lawnmower.  :dizzy:

According to a few people who are actually know a bit about the respective subjects that big couch and that TV are both actually fairly valuable pieces and should not be messed up, at all.

Also, the pictures are pretty much fine once I get rid of those victorian pictures.

Re-upholster the couches/Love Seat, paint the tables and end tables, turn the old school TV into an aquarium, and burn the pictures.

Seriously though, I could see chicks digging that couch. The Chad Tower pic has GOT to go though.  ;D

Yes.  That one is creepy.

Hell, I feel like it is watching me even thru the picture.

Hell no, my avatar is the strongest trademark on this forum outside of the BYOAC logo.  It has value.  I should rent out space in my sig to vendors.  Their ad would be everywhere.

Yeah I couldn't see you changing your avatar, so I felt it was a pretty safe comment. Saint tried to change his and after our time space continuum went out of whack for a while, he changed it back. God only knows what would happen if you changed yours.

I've been using that avatar for years longer than I've been on BYOAC and I use it pretty much across any net activity.

I have the perfect addition to that living room.
We went to an auction a week ago and I ended up bringing home a stereo with an 8-track player in it.  Plus it has that glowing screen and the joystick to set the f/b l/r channels.

I didn't buy the stereo unit, it came as part of a lot purchase, bought some shelves for $2.00 got the table full of crap with them.

I'm just not a pig, like you. It's simple really. I didn't think anything in the picture warranted calling them $25 strippers. You can try to justify it all you want. But it's a pretty lame thing to do. Especially since it's possible they may follow this thread, out of curiosity. Why did they deserve to be insulted?

I'm sure you're a real ladies man, Chad.  ::)

Now it's "female" to show even a modicum of respect for women? I happen to think a real man would show more decorum. You, of course, are the opposite; needing to insult random strangers on a forum where they might not ever show up to defend themselves. Kudos! Real class!

So obviously that makes it ok to call them $25 strippers. Right?

I guess it seem you aren't bright enough to discern the difference between teasing Peale, and insulting strangers. NIVO made a funny at Paige's expense (just suggesting he rented the ladies for the photo-op), you *tried* to be funny by insulting the women directly, by calling them cheap whores.

There's a difference. And if you had any real balls, you'd apologize.

I guess it seem you aren't bright enough to discern the difference between teasing Peale, and insulting strangers. NIVO made a funny at Peale's expense (just suggesting he rented the ladies for the photo-op), you *tried* to be funny by insulting the women directly, by calling them cheap whores.

There's a difference. And if you had any real balls, you'd apologize.

Peale's not here, man.

Peale's prolly digging the improvement in his life.  If he were the guy in the picture instead of Paige, that'd mean that tumor didn't offend the ladies

By the way they're sitting, I'm guessing the one in the white is the friend that helped him shop and the one in the red is the new girlfriend, pure conjecture, however.

Still...that furniture freaks me the ---fudgesicle--- out.

Paige DOES like 'em younger.  I can't accurately put an age to wimmins anymore, but I know Paige doesn't wanna go to "The Big House", so either the one in red is over 18, or she's not the girlfriend.

Paige, you DO realize we're just enjoying thinking about crap we'd never do in our own lives (and mebbe we're living vicariously through your retelling of your escapades)....right? ;D

The one on the right (in red) is girl that went shopping with me.  She is 18 for your information.  The one on the left (in the white) is my roomates girlfriend.  He's the one taking the picture.  The couch has definately seen action, if only from my roomate and the girl in white so far.

P.S. His girlfriend is a Meatloaf fan, so that might explain some of it.

whatever you do though, keep the couch (although isnt it actually a settee?). i think it rocks, just as it is. you have a bizarre mix of furniture but i dont think teh wimmings are going to be too concerned about it. if they've come over to your place they've already decided you're not a psycho killer...

No, they won't be concerned about it. If they are serious about you - they will want to replace everything you own.

I hope you are working the roomates girlfriend angle.  They will usually try to fix a roomate up with everyone they know just to keep you from taking their boyfriend partying.  That is how I met my wife.  After meeting several other friends first

Hey I know it's 5 pages in already, but Paige, I like! My girlfriend calls that style "motel chic".  ;D

You just need to wrap the flat panel TV in wood grain laminate (it sticks out like a sore thumb otherwise).

Kudos to you for not being afraid to do something different! I'd take your decor over most peoples "traditional wood" country crap-fests any day!

I don't see any dashboard lights.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices the uncanny resemblance.  That aside, any couch that prompts a little girl on girl action is alright with me :)
Please!  Give me the good news first!

I also got pancakes!

It's amazing that apparently all people go barefeet on that carpet. They don't want their shoes or socks to get dirty?

The girls wear sandals a lot and take them off a lot.

It seems to be that time of year... about every 12-18 months paige comes in, gives us a very detailed account of his living arrangements and things he has done, and then bolts again.  Last time it was the RV he customized and built a 27" arcade monitor into, the rebuilt scooter, and the accident.

As opposed to Chad, who just lives here.   8)

Hell no.  I'm good for business.  Cutting down all that traffic would seriously cut into your ad revenue.
