I'm sure this has been beat to death and i apologize in advance... I can't seem to get a really clean answer on this.

I can get a 22" CRT PC monitor from craigslist for ~100-200$
I can get a 25" Tri-sync arcade monitor for ~$600

Arcade VGA2 says - YES NOW ALSO FOR PC MONITORS!
TRY CLASSIC GAMES IN THEIR NATIVE RESOLUTIONS ON A PC SVGA MONITOR IN WINDOWS!

so what is the advantage of playing on a tri-sync? i guess pictures would help if anyone would have the 2 setups running with an AVGA2 card.

I've never heard anyone say the AVGA2 native resolutions look better on a PC CRT than on an arcade monitor.  They are just too crisp and everything looks blocky.  An arcade monitor  (or multisync) is designed for lower resolutions and looks much better with a low resolution signal.  For example, dots in pacman look softer on an arcade monitor instead of like rigid little squares on a PC CRT.

Also, you can get a 27" multisync for $369 + shipping (Betson) until 5/31.  $600 seems high.

unfortunetly the 27" wont fit in my pacman cab.. (by about .3 inches)   :banghead:

the 24.8 inch tri-syncs seem more expensive + ~ $100 shipping  :censored:

Ah bummer.  Just be aware that analog multisync monitors do not remember screen settings when going from 640x480 to say 320x240.  You have to readjust pots manually to resize the screen.  This isn't a problem for a monitor dedicated to a single arcade game or even several games that run at the same resolution, but doesn't work very well for a MAME setup.  I don't know of any digital 25" multisyncs.

Yeah, I don't know why they even make...oh. They make analog multi-syncs so they don't have to make three different kinds for dedicated games. So, yeah, what aholfe said. I wouldn't put a 27" for Mame in an old-style cab, anyway.

Use a PC monitor - though a PC monitor doing native resolutions doesn't mean it'll look like an arcade monitor. It just means that it will fill the screen (depending upon the orientation of the game and the emu orientation setting) without stretching the image. As aholfe mentioned, it's VERY crisp. No reason to use an avga with a PC monitor, as Mame does fine by itself. (As the PC monitor can't match refresh rate, the game behavior is irrelevant.)

Then, when you decide you want to go the whole route, make yourself a cab and CP and get a multi-sync.

your talking about pc monitors right? i dont really understand i guess, because right now i have pc CRT monitor WITHOUT AVGA running and all the games fit fine, i notice no issues except the general blurriness.. i thought this is what AVGA fixed, it somehow doesnt stretch the image but still fills the whole screen?

so you said analog multisync arcade monitors dont remember resolutions? i thought thats what avga was supposed to do?

more confused now.  ???

He means that if you change to a new resolution on an analog arcade monitor, you're going to have to adjust the h-size, h-pos, v-size and v-pos for every resolution you go into.

It doesn't remember them like a PC monitor or multisync monitor will.  So if you run games that change to different resolutions all the time, you're going to be making a lot of adjustments.

You need to carefully read over the wiki, then come back and ask more questions. You might not have any.

And check this thread (I assume you are looking at the Nieman's 24.8 trisync):
