vga to component?

I was thinking of getting a cheap 27" TV and checking out how games'll look. Will a vga to component (I guess it's a breakout cable, right?) work at all?...perhaps with some powerstrip help?

Generally not. Some ATI cards came with a dongle to convert signals in this way, but they required the specific card to be used along with them since it wasn't just a wire conversion. Does your video card not include an S-Video jack? Most cards made in the last 6 or 7 years have one.

A little while ago, I was thinking of trying a TV out and thought this might work so bought a this type of cable, thinking the signal quality would be better, and that it might be less fuss than going the DVI/dongle route. I don't think I can return it now, but it was only 12 bucks.

You need a color space converter, not just a cable adapter.

Hmm. I don't know why they'd make such a cable as I have, then. Maybe I can return it. It is a bit past the return period, but I still have the receipt.

The cable you have is meant for either monitors or output devices that can do colourspace conversions on their own. Which is fairly rare, but some devices can.

You can also find more options if you look for a device called a video transcoder. Still, most aren't cheap.

ahofle: yeah, I think FF still has one of those for a little less than that, though I think that's probly the best 'new' price I've seen. I'm only interested in tinkering so that much money isn't in the budget. Thanks, though.

I'm totally confused about how you use a space converter along with a vga component converter.

It works pretty damn spiffy.  I'd give the image quality a 7/10 on my old analog HDTV and 10/10 on my digital HDTV.   It's nice.

     You can do VGA to COMPONENT on any RADEON card with a driver hack and a DIY VGA to COMPONENT cable.
Things you need:
            1.   ATICVPatch.zip (http://www.myav.com.tw/forum/showthread.php?s=48ac19ee7c95dfd22760bf9fbc3af485&threadid=184534&perpage=12&pagenumber=10)
            2.   Power Strip
            3.   The parts to make your VGA to COMPONENT cable (Radio Shack)
     
     Fallow the instruction found here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=212199&page=1&pp=20). Disregard the registry entries and it only working on Windows 98. ATICVPatch works in XP now and it does it all for you. Just use the site for making the VGA to Component cable and to basically see what you’re actually doing. By the way this does not work on newer ATI drivers so you need to use older ones. I tried it and it works pretty well. The only downside is you don’t get a display till windows loads. And the glitch in ATI’s drivers that cause the advanced display menu to disappear after this hack suck too. And that’s why you have to use powerstrip to setup the resolution.
