Opinions sought... which button / vinyl combo looks better
« on: April 09, 2007, 06:58:08 am »
Hi all

Have decided I am going ahead with building my CP using normal Happ buttons with vinyl decals supplied by Pongo.

Would have gone translucents with MikeDeuce disc inserts, and can always upgrade if/ when Mike comes back and offers discs again. Not that I have issues with Pongo's vinyls, they are awesome.

My question is, which button / vinyl combo looks better for the background chosen. Red buttons with black vinyl, or black buttons with red vinyl. I hadn't considered the later but then saw BLah247's Knievel Klone with black control buttons with green decals to match his buttons/t-molding etc.

I think the icons are fairly self-explanatory, and it would be the button functionality that I posted on a previous thread:

The red icons on black buttons looks best to me.  I think that the buttons hide in the background if they are red, this way it looks like icons with black borders, it pops and looks cleaner.

Black Buttons, the red ones blend in too much.

As it is, I think you will have a hard time seeing either.  Regardless of what color you go with, I recommend putting a border around the button clusters to give more contrast to the buttons.

You would have to double up on the button order, which just may inspire another project, but I  think it would look great if you reassembled the buttons so that they had a black outer ring with red button centers.  It would add some punch to the artwork.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

I know what you mean... I like the way Knievel does his CPs, in that around ajoystick / spinner block, he has a band around it and inside, makes the image darker... it is a nice effect and one I was thinking of using. Which would make the light colour, not the black, the way to go... and another would be a black band around each button, blending into that darkened image... hmm... possibilities are bubbling in my head...

That's insane :P But I like it, for some reason... I doubt I could justify that along with all the other costs.

I forgot to mention since I am going to shamelessly copy Knievel's neon side signs in my project (thanks Knievel, you're the best!), I've had to "settle" for the blue colour scheme, not the red... reason why? I can only get neon rings in blue. But blue was my original choice, and as we all know, it looks damn good.

As a bonus, the neon rings were heavily discounted since they are being phased out, the only dealer that has them won't for very much longer. So, before I've even so much as bought an arcade button, I've got two 10" blue neon rings :P

So one day, there will be an aussie lowboy with very Knievel-like side neons!!!
