'The Host' - Awesome looking Korean Horror Film!!
« on: March 14, 2007, 02:33:41 pm »
http://www.hostmovie.com/   (Film trailer embedded in homepage)

Supposedly a new twist on the old monster genre...where the monster is readily visible throughout the movie, in broad daylight attacking characters that have an interesting back story. Horror fans are saying it's the "New Jaws". Critical acclaim has been non-stop in the foreign press.

To me, it looks like an interesting cross between the Godzilla movies/Shawn of the Dead and the Royal Tenenbaums. Which seems like it would make for a good black comedy/horror film.

NOTE: Since it's release, it has gone on to become the highest grossing South Korean film of all time!

Looks very promising.

Incidentally, if you're into Korean films then it's definitely worth checking out Old Boy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (especially Old Boy which has one of the best endings to a film ever).

In the Trailer I'm sure I saw people speaking English.  Is the film in English?

I don't mind subtitles.  I don't even notice them after the first minute or two.  And when I think back about a movie I watched with subtitles my brain has literally edited out the foreign language audio track and replaced it with English.  I remember the people speaking English, in their correct voices, and the subs aren't there.  Most people I've mentioned this to who watch foreign films say the exact same thing happens to them.

One potential problem with subtitles, though, is they usually have to be dumbed down in order to be read quickly enough.  I watched the dubbed version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon after seeing the subbed version probably three or four times, and I was surprised at how much detail was missing from the subbed version.  However, as usual, the awful voice work made the dubbed version nearly unwatchable, so I won't be abandoning subs any time soon.  The one exception to this was District B13, which by the way is one of the baddest ass action films you have ever or will ever see.  They talk too fast in that movie and keeping up with the subs is practically impossible, and certainly makes it impossible to see anything else going on on-screen.  My wife and I rented it and after about ten or fifteen minutes we started it over and watched it dubbed.

It is not in English.  There is at least one scene in English (with subtitles, presumably), but yeah, it's a foreign language film.  I just finished getting it over bittorrent.  Of course, the copy I got has French subtitles -- serves me right for being a thief.  Oh well, if the subs were going to be in any language other than English, at least they are French.  Now I might even give the movie a try, though I can't read French nearly fast/well enough to keep up.

I live in rural Utah.  Foreign/Indy movies are hard to find in urban Utah.  This movie will not come near me.  Unfortunate, cos it looks like it would be a ball to see in the theater.

Have you watched any/many subbed films?  If you don't like reading subs, you don't like reading subs, but I find that most people who cringe at the thought of reading subs haven't actually done it.  I know I felt that way when I was in high school, before I'd ever watched an entire movie with subtitles.  If you've always just assumed it would be lame, definitely give it a shot because it ain't.  If you have watched entire movies with subtitles and found it to be lame, well, skip it I guess, because it is.  But this is definitely a "don't knock it 'till you've tried it kind of thing."

I've rented movies with subtitles.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon -- by accident, I didn't realize they had two versions
Passion

Both good movies, but both movies were about the visuals, when there was talking there wasn't much action.

A horror film seems a little odd with subtitles, you're reading a conversation, while a monster's shadow is being projected somewhere on screen.

If you close your eyes or cringe you could miss key dialoged.

Are you sure both of the English speaking scenes were in English in the French version you downloaded?

It seems odd that just the dumping of the toxins and the "the government wont help you" scenes are in English, unless those scenes are making some political statement about English speaking Americans are the bad guys.

I hope English speaking Americans are the bad guys, rather than English Speaking Asians/Eastern Europeans like usual in Hollywood/esque films.

Well . . . I only saw one English speaking scene and it absolutely was in English, with Korean subtitles.  And then it had French subtitles over the top of the Korean ones.  It was just like any Hollywood movie that has a scene with people speaking a foreign language.  You get subtitles for a few minutes and then it's all back to English.  In this film the Korean subtitles only appear during the brief English-speaking scene; the rest of the time there were only French subtitles and people speaking Korean.  I clicked around to a couple different points in the movie and they were not in English and there were no English subs.

Various subtitle files, including English, can be found here: http://subscene.com/66783/subtitlefilm.aspx

Remember: Subtitle files must correspond to the release you have.

How does that work?  The film is encoded with the subtitles embedded.  It's just a single AVI file.  Is there a program I can run it through to strip one set of subs and put another set into it?  Simply adding subs to the file I have wouldn't work very well, as I'd have English subs over the top of French subs, presumably making the whole lot unreadable.

Horror films are just wrong movies for subs.  I mean the suspense, music, it just wouldn't add up to a great experience.  I did some research and was about to pick up The Host via greedbay, but checked on this thread and saw that I would have to watch it with subtitles.  I guess I'll pass on this one.   :'(

It only annoys me if a movie is dubbed.  I always buy/watch the subbed version.
And also... if everything was dubbed to Dutch here, my English would have been crap... I even learned some Japanese by just watching loads of subbed Japanese movies and anime :)
If you are used to subs it won't bother you anymore.

I'm pretty happy that the dutch use subtitels too. Dubbing is just soo horrible. I really don't see the problem with subtitles. I actually even switch on the english subtitles for an english spoken movie while watching a DVD. It's just easier if you can also read it (when someones makes a noise or something).

I was just in Bulgaria and they dub almost everything on TV there. They even let the original audio still a bit audible (because of the effects and the music I guess) Just drives me nuts. Watching Fawlty Towers while someone is apparently reading the lines of a piece of paper just doesn't have the effect as the great vocals from Basil and Manuel. Oddly enough the movies on the big screen are not dubbed there.

ok, i went and saw this last evening. not bad. only prob i guess is that the reviewers were touting it as 'funny' in the same way as films like 'evil dead'. thus, everyone in the cinema was laughing at all sorts of things- even the production title (show box) animation at the beginning. they were primed to do so. there were some deliberately funny moments of course. i found myself overly distracted by the device setting up the premise: the premise being that formaldehyde is disposed of into the han river. the reason? the jars were dusty! WTF?

the effects were pretty good, the two main studios were from new zealand and san francisco. the cinematography was great. lots of rain, reminding me of 'seven samurai' for that atmospheric feel.

the cinema i went to only charges $6.80 (about $5 US id guess) so at that price it was worth it.

I saw The Host this past weekend. It's a great movie. I've seen a ton of subbed movies, and I've never had a problem with them.

There are, in fact, a couple of scenes involving Americans where they speak in perfect English and the subs are dropped. I'm sure it works in reverse in Korea.

We took my brother's fiance (a Korean girl). She didn't need the subs, but she never comments on how accurate they were or weren't. So they must have been at least decent.

Kung Fu Hustle was on last Saturday.

I was watching it for about a half an hour before I realized I was reading subtitles.

Sorry to drag up this thread, but figured it would be better than starting a new one. Anyways, I just watched this movie at 2am this morning (baby wouldn't sleep). It was definitely a cool movie. I couldn't help but think the cop guy was just Jason Statham minus about 30 lbs. ;D
