A spinner in the best conditions can spin for like 1 minute.   A motor has much more friction and resistence.  5 minutes is an amazing feat.

did i not mention gyros already?

You guys think this man's a crackpot, search for "Hutchinson Effect" on Youtube.  You'll find a guy (who incidentally lives in an apartment, on welfare) who plays with magnets, films stuff upside down (so it looks like they are levitating rather than falling), etc... He's got plenty of shmucks believing his crap too...

i stopped reading when he described faraday as a mechanical genius. he hasnt even attributed the right skills to the right people! nickolas otto was a mechanical genius, charles parsons was a mechanical genius. faraday is a genius because he was probably the first modern physicist. this with only a basic understanding of maths...

edit; too hard to read all that. wikipedia makes for mucher easier reading (",)

im happy with james randis assessment of joseph newman  ;)

Incorrect danny.  Dopes in North America say gyros.  Those who know better say yiros just like yourself.

I suppose if Chad is comparing places that sell gyros (the food item) to Wendy's or just his local area, then true enough, not many places sell them.  Around my area, places that sell gyros are about as common as an Arby's (means nothing to you, danny, other than to say Wisconsin has an oddly high amount of gyro-selling establishments.)

well, to be fair, its spelt with a gamma in greek (γύρος) so its a throat-clearing sound rather than Y or G. still, they are tasty...

oh, and back to our friendly crackpot. this is from the straight dope:

According to the Mississippi Press, Newman said he was ordered by God to marry both his 30-year-old secretary and her 8-year-old daughter. Newman complied--God presided over the ceremony--and happily notified the world in a 12-page press release. (One copy was sent to the Ayatollah Khomeini.)

The only problem--well, maybe not the only problem--was that Newman was already married to a third woman. Authorities promptly removed the eight-year-old from Joe's home, though he said he had not consummated the marriage. Newman, who once ran for president on God's instructions, angrily declared that this shabby treatment was going to get God really PO'ed. "I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this does not result that God will place misery upon the state of Mississippi.... I can see the handwriting on the wall and the people of Mississippi had better wake up."

I can't think of any places in my local area that carry them.  In other areas of MA only the little greek roast beef places have them and I've never heard of anyone actually ordering one here.  In Boston you can get them a little more commonly but in Boston you can get anything.

Gyros create a force that helps maintain orientation. I believe what you want to refer to in this case is a flywheel. In newman's case, he effectively has a massive flywheel in the large magnet. If his measurement device to determine the velocity of the "flywheel" was slighty less inaccurate than it should be, the it would appear that the device was producing more than it was using.

The two keys in this process are:
1. He always has to prime the system - kind of like a flywheel.
2. It only works for a certain amount of time - also like a flywheel.

actually the reason i mentioned a gyro is as an example of how long a low friction flywheel will turn for when there is no power. when you shut down the engine of a light plane, you shut down the vacuum for the gyro (the gyro is spun via a vacuum passing over its surface). you can hear the gyro spinning for quite a while after the power is cut. this is an example of a real object rather than a thought experiment.

the father of a friend of mine (sadly) is trying to build a perpetual motion machine. ive always been too embarrassed to tell him it wont work. every new incarnation begs the question"why is this more efficient than a flywheel, with its single part but will still come to a stop when power is removed regardless?" interestingly, he does have a rather large steel flywheel that he had machined as part of one of his machines. it never occured to him that the best he can do is JUST that flywheel...
