Favorite NES emulator to use with Mamewah
« on: February 01, 2007, 01:07:42 pm »
So I need a good emulator that runs most of the game well and will go into full screen upon loading a rom and when you press escape it closes, much like you can set Zsnes to do for SNES.  What do you guys typically like to use.  Thanks so much!

Give FCE Ultra a try - i find it very good.

http://fceultra.sourceforge.net/

For a modified version that exits on the Esc key go here:

Thanks, I'll give this a try.  I've been using Nester forever but it doesen't look like it will cut the mustard for the cab.

That modded FCEUltra actually is working very well.  I downloaded MESS once but to me it just looks like MAME32 for consoles.  I haven't really played with it much, but I did see that you use it in your .ini files.

Yeah, MESS is overly complicated for what you said you were looking for in your post.

FCE Ultra (modded) will do a great job of providing solid NES emulation in your cab.  I have it running 1796 roms on mine and its never missed a beat.

Well if it looked like Mame32 then it was not MESS, maybe MessGUI (messgui.exe). They are distributed together. MESS (mess.exe) is strictly commandline and VERY similar to Mame functionality.

VirtuaNES was a bit better than FCE Ultra. It looks like FCE Ultra has new active developers so they might surpass VirtuaNES - if they haven't already.

another vote for virtuaNES, although I'm sure NES emu development has pretty much peaked on several of the popular emus, such as FCE Ultra, but VirtuaNES works great for me anyway.

I've tried all three, and still can't get one to work exactly correctly.

Virtuanes - gives me a black screen when I try to launch a game from inside of Mamewah.
I have to use the task manager to end the task, then I can see the game for a split second before it exits.
I don't hear any sound, so not sure if it is popping up under Mamewah or not.

MESS - when I run a game from Mamewah, I have to hit a button for it to continue into the game.
When I get to the game, the emulator runs too fast, and the menu bar is at the top of the screen.
ESC won't exit the game.

FCEU modded to exit with ESC - Won't go full screen.
I go to the menu bar configuration and go to Video and click the Full screen.
When I click OK, I get an error saying: DirectDraw:Error setting display mode.

I use the  FCEU NES emulator with modified MAME controls with esc buttonand it works perfectly I modified the screen resolution for my arcade monitor and it works a treat. I say you should use this one.

Ok, Got FCEU to go fullscreen, got the sound working, and the controls.
But it is running a little fast.
Need to figure out how to slow it down to normal speed.

EDIT:
Just noticed that all other games seem to play at normal speed except for Super Mario Brothers.
Weird.

You are probably using the wrong version.  Try the japanese/US version.  The music is faster in the english version IIRC.
