Dragon King with Radeon 9550
« on: January 21, 2007, 12:25:39 am »
Hello, I've been running DK for almost 4 years now in my mame cabinet.  It's been working great without a single glitch until I decided to move my cabinet into a different room.  In the process of removing the computer and installing again I managed to damage my Radeon 7000 video card.  (I bent a pin on the s-video cable and shorting something out).  So I borrowed a Radeon 7000 out of another machine until I could get a replacement.

I just purchased a Radeon 9550 (since it was so cheap), and installed it into my cabinet tonight.  I installed all the software drivers under windows XP Pro.  I am using the S-video output into a TV.

Windows comes up just fine, and I can start mame32 and play games just fine.  But I can not start Dragon King anymore.  It tries to load and goes to an all black screen.  I can hit ESC to get back into windows.

It has been so many years since I have gone through all the .ini files and set this thing up I can't seem to find any settings that I may need to change for my new video card.

So basically, I went from a Radeon 7000 (64MB) to a Radeon 9550 (256MB) card and DK won't display anymore.  I am sure it is a simple setting, and I will continue to search the .ini files for it.  But in the mean time I was hoping someone would have a quick solution for me.  I am currently running DK .93.

Thanks,

Terry

The 9500 series is "wierd" but it should work fine.

I'm running a 9600 right now so I know the fact that the card is newer isn't the issue.

Look at the [DX] section of the frontend.ini

The settings you wanna mess with are the rendermode and the texture format.

Hope that helps.

I tried all the combinations of RenderMode, and TexFormat and no luck.  I originally had them set to Rendermode=128, and TexFormat=22.

I am starting to believe it might be my video card settings.  I originally tried mame32 v.104 with golden tee 2K, and it worked and looked great.  But then I tried the command line prompt for the older version of mame.79 I am running under DK, and the screen sizes were wrong, and the actual colors in the games were all messed up.

This was independant of DK running.  Did you have to set up your video card any special way to work properly?  Kind of strange it works good with the newer mame versions, but not with the older.

Also, my PJ64 isn't working anymore.  I had the glide64v0.42 plugin working fine with my old card.  But with the new card it says 'evoodoo cannot create primary surface'.  I'll have to do a little bit of research on that.  And my Daphne emulator seems OK.

Thanks,

Terry

I went to ATI's website and saw they had a much newer driver than the one I got on the CD.  I installed it and everything just started working perfectly again.  I should have known better than to use an old CD driver.

Haven't been on here for a while since everythings been working great.  Glad to see your still supporting DK.

Thanks again.

Well since glide isn't supported on radeons then yeah I can understand why you can't use a gide plugin on p64.  You probably had a software based glide wrapper installed, which you shouldn't have
been using in the first place.  A direct X plugin will give you better performance.

Glad to see you got everything working.

Thanks for that tip.  I just found a DirectX plugin and installed it.  It does work better.  And after all these years!
