My Jukebox Light Grid, Software and Free Demo Download
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:08:20 pm »
Hey Guys!

Wanted to share my lighting project and software with a free download of a demo that we have coded. I'm lazy and already have this link!

http://www.skjukebox.com/forum/index.php?topic=117.0

Follow the directions for the free download! The Demo is cool and only a part of what the software will do.

Hmm, I can't see any pics or anything to download. Perhaps I have to be a forum member to do that?

BTW Your project sounds interesting. I have been working on a similar thing but for use with the LEDWiz hardware. I have used a plasma effect with 10 different palettes. Attached is the program I used to test the effect. You can click the mouse in the window to change the palette. You might want to consider something like this for your jukebox.

Ditto, I can't see anything.

You might want to consider just reposting the whole she-bang in this forum and giving a direct download link.

OK! Sorry about that, I just bit the bullet and posted everything here!

Hey Guys,

I wanted to share with you my lighting project and software for my jukebox. These are what I call l.e.d. light grids and they use rgb leds. The grids have 64 squares and each square can produce 4,096 colors. These grids will go in on each side of my juke where the white plastic is. Some friends and I have created the software and I wanted it to be easy for myself or someone to create patterns. With the editor software you can create your own patterns frame by frame just like video. You can run the pattern after or during creation to see the effect. There are editing features built in to make it easier to create the patterns. Once you have the patterns created you then have to run them on the player to see the patterns on the light grid. The reason I did this was you really don’t need everything tied together when all you need is the player once the patterns are done this can also be automatically loaded with SK Jukebox. The player has features for selecting the proper usb ports for the light controller boards etc. There is a auto load feature that will load a separate file or a playlist file for when the player first comes up so you don’t have to do it. Yes I mentioned playlists, the player does have this and has scripting that allows the speed and the number of times a pattern runs before moving on to the next. The one thing(one of many) we are working on next is sound control. Yes good ol’ sound like the 70’s color organs or what I call sound to light. There is a lot of possibilities once this is working with patterns, colors and sound frequencies. We have done some trials but are still working out the bugs.

I have attached the editor program if anybody wants to play with it, see what you can create! If your going to build a juke and are not on a real tight budget this is one great addition. I am not selling the lights unless there is a interest but I will help someone if they want to build them. The controller boards are available from some MIT Kids that made these for disco dance floors. I am looking at designing my own boards sometime.

This is what the light grids look like and a couple of example pictures with them and patterns. I have worked on this design and getting the look i wanted and software for about the last year and have changed ideas on what i wanted on the lighting design and software for almost 2 years. My brother was a big help on the grids since he works at a tool shop and we were able to make the pieces at the shop. The german fellows that have worked with me on the software really know thier programming and have made this idea a reality. The whole jukebox project has been a long and hard(but enjoyable) project. There has been alot of reasearch and finding what i wanted and needed. When your turn on your project and know that you have made it and can enjoy it that's all that matters. Trust me when i say this, build what you want if it's the money being tight take your time and build what you want it is well worth it. When I started this project i was on a very tight budget and bought what i could and it has taken over 3 years to get what i wanted.

The free Editor download is stuck in with the pics, The free Screen Demo is in the next post.

Cheers!
Kevin

If you have any questions ask away!
Enjoy!

Here is some pics with sound control and a one frame pattern! The real cool thing is mixing the sound with patterns. This is some examples of what we have going on in the software but still working on the control to the boards. The red is set to high frequency, green to mid and blue to bass. As you can see it is setup to mix the colors also. There is a couple of controls to set the interaction of audio, the frame rate control sets the frame rate for response, pattern speed and the record level on your main volume control settings set the interaction.

Here is a FREE screen Demo for you to try! This uses a pattern and sound! This is really cool you don't want to miss the FREE download!

Make sure you put the 2 .dll files in your windows/system32 folder and you turn up your recording controls.

Cheers!

Looks really cool.  Are you going to charge for this and how much?  How much were the lights and everything.  I plan on building a jukebox this summer hopefully.
I b**ch. People listen!!

This looks like a cool project!  When I saw it, I thought of the MIT dance floor, was that your inspiration?  I'd love to see a video of it in action, do you have the ability to capture one and are willing to post/host/link to it?

I tried running the editor, but got a 'comdlg32.ocx' missing/corrupt error.  Does your program require support files, perhaps VB6 runtimes?

Also, with the demo, there is only one dll, you said two.  Am I missing one, or is the .bas file the second?

Thanks,
Rick

OK! Sorry, I updated the links. The Demo now has both .ddl files that will go into your windows/system32 folder. I also included the comdlg32.ocx to go into system32 folder. Yes you are correct on the VB6 runtimes, this would have been ok if i would have done a installer but i didn't want to do that yet.

Yes i will create a video but i will be a couple of days to get it on the forum.

Yes I did get my inspiration from the disco dance floor, the boards were already designed so why recreate the wheel. Though their software was for Mac and one of their other builders did C#net I still wanted software that was more user friendly.

I haven't given it much thought on how i would distribute these if someone was interested. Since the boards come from some MIT Students at Dropout Designs you will have to purchase the boards with them. There is a change i did to the boards with one set of resistor pack values because i am using rgb leds with an added red to each one for better color mixing. Probably what wil hapen is the information from me will be free for the build information and software i will have to discuss with my co-programmers.

This is the link for the DDF Controller boards:
http://www.dropoutdesign.com/ddf-parts.html
You don't need to purchase cables from them or anything else but the boards and components. If you can not solder better get alot of practice because they are surface mount components and can be tricky. You can purchase them assembled but they are very expensive. I suggest if you don't solder get a friend to do it.

The only other thing i have created is the led calibration boards that have the pots on them. Those would probably be packaged with the software or purchased seperately. I am not really on here to sell these but to see if thier is an interest in what we are doing. I am hoping to get a website up that will give more info!

Here is a little video i put together , i will have some better ones soon!
