Metal Slug Themed Arcade Controller

Well I love the Metal Slug arcade games so I decided to create a two player arcade controller with a Metal Slug theme.  Documented my project below...

That is super sweet.  What's the extra button for on the right at the bottom?

I LOVE the artwork.

EDIT:  OH MY GOD.  I just checked out your site.  I cannot believe you hand painted that thing.  It looks like a computer print out or something.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Thanks :)

Which extra button are you referring to? The one on the side?
If so there is actually one on each side, I just mapped those to the coin 1 and 2 buttons in MAME.
Could easily remap them for the odd game of pinball, as they're in a good place for the paddles.

OMG  :o you have some great talent for hand painting.  :o  Folks the pic above does no justice for the work this guy did.   :o  Check out his website to see the great detail and thinking that went into this artwork and other projects.   :o

I sure hope you did a few coats of clear on that work before you mounted the hardware.

Yea about 4 coats of polyurethane varnish went over the top.  It did actually completely mess up on the second coat - all kind of shrivelled up (not sure how else to describe the effect) - not sure why, I had left it to dry for a few days before recoating but I'm guessing the first coat needed even longer.  I managed to use fine wire wool to smooth it out enough.  Final finish wasn't 100% perfect but close enough for me :)

Rest of my site is still work in progress, slowly putting bits and pieces up.  Just posted the Metal Slug one here as it was finished.

ardnut, beautiful artwork!

You need to learn to vectorize, you've got some talent there.

Which extra button are you referring to?

The one in the bottom row to the right for each player.  You have the classic Street Fighter layout (6 buttons) and then two additional ones below that.  The one on the left is pretty common because it allows for the true Neo Geo layout (so you can play Metal Slug!) but I'm not sure what the button on the right is for.

This looks like the X-Gaming layout.  If you were to use it on one of the consoles you would need 8 buttons.  I am not sure where the 8th button would be used in MAME or even what games though.

Yep I just copied it from the x-gaming board, you'll see on my site that I got a blue print for one and used that when making it.

Best hand painted CP I have ever seen.  You are a really talented artist.  You could probably do well offering design services here.

Clearly a labor of love, and the final outcome is AWESOME!

Did you have the artwork scanned before you started drilling holes in it?  :)

You come in here and on the 4th post put that up.  :notworthy:

Not only is your artwork sooooooo good, you pinched an idea I was having about a metal slug theme. Then you went and blew me out of the water. Nothing I could do could be that good.
Please say you are from Victoria, Australia so I can come around and throw bricks through your roof tiles

and ummm  can i have a copy if you vectorize it?  :-[
Can you even vectorize a painting?

And I spose ...... Welcome to BYOAC

Can you even vectorize a painting?

You could vectorize it with lots of hours of Illustrator work, but why bother? A super high-res scan of that painting would work damn nicely for a reproduction of this piece. The detail is already there.

Vectorizing is used on low-res artwork when you want to upsize it.

Say what?

Very nice job (hand or otherwise).  Are you going to do something similar for the sides?

It's finished as is, the sides are just sprayed gloss black.  Working on another project now (xbox 360 face plate), so wouldn't have the time any way.  After that I plan on doing something good with airbrushing :)

Thanks for all the great feedback, much appreciated.
