Screwed up TV in Service Mode - Any Help?
« on: November 20, 2006, 10:37:41 am »
Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I'm desperate.

I was jacking around in the service menu for my tv, trying to reduce the vertical screen size, and I somehow managed to cause my Component Video to stop working. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

The tv is a Magnavox 27MS3404/17. Does anyone have any idea on how to restore the settings back to what they were before I screwed them up? Please help!

Regards,

Matt

your osd should show exactly what you are adjusting so look for input signal or options, there will be a factory reset but you could end up with convergence problems and more

When I go into Service Mode, there is an "Options" menu item. If you select it, there are non-descriptive values like "Option 1: 0 ". I tried changing these but it didn't help. I really need to find out what the orignal factory values were, so I can put them back. Any help?

Thanks,

Matt

Umm... I think you misunderstood my post.

The user manual available from Magnavox (which I have) details normal tv setup via OSD. It does not detail the "Service Mode" settings. "Service Mode" settings are hidden and rightly set aside for technicians.

Many homebuilt arcades detailed within this forum use Component Video Input. Some of these users have used the "Service Mode" settings to tweak their display.

I attempted to do so, and lost my CVI input.

That is what this is all about.

I solved my problem. Since it took me nearly a week to do so, I thought I would share the solution. I hope this helps you.

Warning: Messing around with the service menu on your tv can be dangerous. Some settings might screw up your tv and possibly damage the tv permanently.

Of course... if you are like I was, that warning comes a bit too late.  ;)

Moving right along...

If you screw up your service menu settings on your tv, you need to locate the service manual for your tv. To do so, you need the model number of your tv. This is usually on the back of the tv.  If you have a Philips or Magnavox tv, you need to know the chassis number for your tv too. This is located on the back of your tv as well.

Once you have this information, you have a few choices.

a) You can order a service manual from the manufacturer. But be aware that they can be quite expensive (> $50).

b) You can order a Photofact/eFact from Sams Technical Publishing. Be careful here, these aren't necessarily the same thing as the service manual. The one I recieved contained only the schematic for the tv. Cost me $22 for that, yeah.  :(

c) Buy one off of ebay, if you can find one and if the seller is reputable. Good luck.

d) Find one online. Two good sites for locating service manuals are eserviceinfo.com and sharefx.com. This is where I found mine.

e) Take in the tv to a factory authorized repair center. This can be expensive and take forever.

Once you have the service manual, you'll need to locate the default settings for your models service menu and re-enter them. Once you do that, you should be in good shape.

This solved my problem, and I hope it helps you too.

Good luck!

-Matt
