Project falkensmaze!!!
« on: October 08, 2006, 06:03:50 pm »
Just noticed this part of the forum so thought i better "announce" my first cab.
Thought about building few years back but thought it was too much of a challenge but think i should be able to make the grade.
so far i have...

PC....

AMD 64 3800+ am2
1 GIG RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS (PCI-E)
120GB WD  Sata
SONY DVD Drive
22 inch dell (Sony tubed) monitor ( i will be putting this monitor in my cab)

Controls...

30 or so  buttons from ultimarc!!
2 j-stiks 8/4
1 i-PAC 2
1 opti-PAC
1 N64 usb adapter!

(on order)
Happs track ball 3" high ball
lash of t-moulding
2 Happ supers
1 coin door ( no coin mech)
1 4way trigger top jstik

Ive got the PC pretty much configured, using GameEx and fairly happy with it cos I'm building large extension to my house in next 6 months :banghead: and will have new lounge and will use the cab as home theatre setup with new plasma ( if she lets me) but Mame still the main reason for building cab... so far I got Mame, N64, SNES, NES, Genesis, Master System, GameBoy, Atari 2600, C64, Spectrum and v pinball ( which i have yet to master) and  40 000 or so Roms

Due to house extension i have had to build a new workshop as old one needs to go and hope to have it wired up for electricity next week and then i can maybe start on my cab(glad i configured PC --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- start planning cab as you learn lots while running differant emus!!)

Still haven't decided on spinner or flight stik but deff want both not sure if i should hak a M$ wingman or go for happ heavy duty trigger, but if you have any ideas im all ears..

as for name falkensmaze is provisional but i might keep it...always liked and have used the tag for years now

P's should i case the PC or leave it bare for that ubergeekness feeling!!!!!

The PC your using makes the one I've got in my cab look like cr*p, it's actually not very far off the specs for my main PC so I was pretty impressed with that alone. If you need any help working out v pinball feel free to ask and as for leaving the PC in the case or not I guess it really depends on how often, if ever, you'll need to take it out. If you don't need to take the PC out again once it's working then it would seem alot more professinal to take it out, but if your not confident on doing so or might need to take it out for one reason or another in the case might be best. What type of wood are you planning to use anyway?

Dont realy like the stuff but im 50/50 at the mo and willing to listen to arguments. i realy like working with wood but i know MDF has its benifets ( ITS CHEAP)!!!  either way it will be 3/4

I don't have any experience with MDF, but I my cabinet maker buddy recommends high grade 9 to 11 ply birch plywood.  It is less messy, holds screws better, and is lighter.  It is however, more expensive ($40 per 4x8 sheet vs. $25 per sheet).  For what it's worth, I'm using it on my current project (Xcelerator driving cab).

Good luck on your build.

If you don't mind a few rounded bolt heads sticking out of the top of your cp then get some carriage bolts and just drill 4 holes and then one big (1.5" or so) hole for the joystick itself.  Some peple like a cleaner look and flush mount 4 blind nuts and then screw into those.  Just do a serach on the different kinds of bolts and you will figure it out.  Bob Roberts has the carriage bolts.  I could not find them easily locally.
