Timers
«

Has anyone made a timer before? Something 5V or 12V DC, using ICs, TTL, etc? Something that could be mounted on a breadboard.
On a side note, what type of circuit runs Christmas lights that do the different patterns?

The 555 is a very versatile and simple timer. Here is a link that has a lot of info on it:
http://www.uoguelph.ca/~antoon/gadgets/555/555.html
If you google 555 you will find loads of info and tons of example circuits.
As far as the Christmas lights, they can be "blinked" by one bulb in the string being a "blinker bulb."
Or if you get real elaborate, such as the animated christmas figures, (I think this is what you are talking about), they can be controlled by several timers such as the 555, or more easily by a programmable controller, such as PIC.
