List of Dreamcast vertical shooters?
« on: August 28, 2006, 12:51:04 pm »
I was given a boxed Dreamcast with a few games by my buddy the other day. Was thinking about putting this in my vertical MAME cab. Only shooter I have presently is Gigawing which is horizontal, but I remember seeing someones screenshots of shooters on the Dreamcast which let you spin the output to vertical.

I found links to a couple of them by searching, but I was wondering if someone has links to a complete list or page with screenshots of Dreamcast shooters.

planet dreamcast has quite a few of the verts listed but they are mixed in with reviews of other games.

Thanks Horseboy, that was one of the pages I was on, but somehow missed that page.
I got an S-Video cable with the Dreamcast and hooked it up to my LCD monitor to test. It was interesting to compare GigaWing in MAME to the DC version.

Much more difficult with the control pad than an arcade stick!

Are Ikaruga, Psyvariar and Gunbird2 it?

Some of the vertical shooters mentioned in that list are vertically scrolling, but are created for horizontal display (Giga Wing, Mars Matrix).

I was hoping there would be more games which truly supported a vertically mounted monitor.  :-\

Well, the Dreamcast is a home console, so there will be no shooters that support a verticle monitor. No games at all, in fact. Any arcade port on a DC that used a verticle screen in the arcade would had to have been modified to fit a TV (always horizontal) when they did the port.

Under Defeat supports a vertical monitor. I haven't played it in a month or so, but do recall that I could change the orientation and the controls to compensate for the rotation.

Well, huh. I guess you learn something everyday. Unless you are me and this is one of the last 2 or 3 things left that I didn't know.

And actually...

I can't think of any verticle shooters on Dreamcast that DON'T actually support true verticle. It was a standard option for those games.

Sorry I wasn't more concise in my original post. The only reason I considered adding a Dreamcast to my vertical MAME machine was because of the Dreamcasts rotate feature.

Versapak, do you think GigaWing has that feature and I missed it? I went through the options and didn't find it, but perhaps I missed it. I packed the thing back up after testing it, since it was kind of in the way hooked up to my computer monitor.

Gigawing 1 and 2 aswell as Mars Matrix are both horizontally-oriented games (depsite the fact that they are vertical shooters).

The shmups.com list above is grossly out of date.  Shmups are still being released for Dreamcast (seeing as it's virtually a Naomi-in-a-box, and the Naomi is still a popular development platform for shmup developers).

If I get the time I'll sit down and write a list some time on the weekend of all the tate-friendly titles.  Or you could post the same question on the shmups.com forums and hope some kind soul over there will write up a list for you.

There are arcade style controllers out there for the Dreamcast.

Thanks Goz. How do you like Ikaruga?
I was at a game show over the weekend, and got to try it on a Gamecube... Iwasn't as taken with it as most. The color switching screamed "gimmick", and actually annoyed me more than a hold-for-shield Capcom type setup. To be fair, I didn't have a lot of time to spend on the game, so maybe I just didn't give it a chance to grow on me.

I know it's not aimed at me, but I like Ikaruga alot. Wouldn't say love, because after all the hype I was expecting more I guess. But it is an instant classic for me and though the first couple stages aren't that hard, after that it gets pretty tough. And while I can't do them much yet, I hear it is a whole lot of fun ones you know how to do chain combos. Besides, the background look awesome and while I would have liked a slightly faster ship, it's still pretty sweet.

You either love or hate Ikaruga.  There's very few people who sit in the middle.

Some even go as far as to say it's not a shmup but rather a puzzle game due to the VERY heavy emphasis on pattern memorisation over reflexes.  I'm not so sure that "puzzle" is the right term, but then again there are always those with a burning desire to pigeonhole everything in life.

I quite enjoy Ikaruga for the novelty of it.  It's nice to have a game from time to time that breaks the mould (as long as it's a polished one, which Ikaruga certainly is).

Others find the above-mentioned necessary memorisation annoying, along with the other detraction from traditional shmup "rules" - such as no powerups, and the need to absorb bullets at times to succeed.

I wouldn't call it the best shmup ever, but I still enjoy it enough to play it every now and then (depsite the fact that I suck at it).

I love Ikaruga.  That, UnderDefeat, and Tailgunner 2 were enough to make me build a Dreamcast cabinet.

Thats enough positives that I'll give it a chance. I only got to try it very briefly, and in a spot where there where people bumping into me and watching. Not the best place to fairly judge a game.

Yeah  ikarugas the 1st treasure game that i put a lot of effort into and complete with very big chains on every level on my cube it took me about 120 hours. This was over a period of about a year and a half  just bits and bobs like half an hour 1 day maybe an hour or more on other occassions. Even though its brilliant i could never play it for long periods of time afraid of getting a headache figuring out some chains.    If i were you i would visit IKARUGA . CO . UK to give yourself a bit of a head start when i have some free time im going to get some of the remaining chains i never got by looking at some of the top players in the world and trying there patterns. Its just like beat em ups theres no point in trying to figure out all the advanced combos and tactics yourself its a waste of your free time just look at hardcore guys on the web its hardly cheating its just giving you more of a life and freetime to play other games a booster if you like.        Radient silvergun now thats another story way harder than ika i managed to get just the disk on the cheap havent really been bothered with the chains yet although it is a lot better to play without the chains than ika way more big bosses you see. You need to play for the chains in ika otherwise its dirt cakes.
