Thanks Goz. How do you like Ikaruga?
I was at a game show over the weekend, and got to try it on a Gamecube... Iwasn't as taken with it as most. The color switching screamed "gimmick", and actually annoyed me more than a hold-for-shield Capcom type setup. To be fair, I didn't have a lot of time to spend on the game, so maybe I just didn't give it a chance to grow on me.
You either love or hate Ikaruga. There's very few people who sit in the middle.
Some even go as far as to say it's not a shmup but rather a puzzle game due to the VERY heavy emphasis on pattern memorisation over reflexes. I'm not so sure that "puzzle" is the right term, but then again there are always those with a burning desire to pigeonhole everything in life.
I quite enjoy Ikaruga for the novelty of it. It's nice to have a game from time to time that breaks the mould (as long as it's a polished one, which Ikaruga certainly is).
Others find the above-mentioned necessary memorisation annoying, along with the other detraction from traditional shmup "rules" - such as no powerups, and the need to absorb bullets at times to succeed.
I wouldn't call it the best shmup ever, but I still enjoy it enough to play it every now and then (depsite the fact that I suck at it).
