Am after a 27" Arcade Monitor, But which??
« on: August 01, 2006, 12:26:24 pm »
Im toying with getting a Arcade monitor for my cab instead of using my TV. I will require it to be a 27" size, and will be playing a large variety of arcade games on it as it will be in my cab using MAME. Whats my best bet for a decent Monitor, i have heard some of the multi sync moniotrs can be unreliable, so not sure what the prices are and which model to go for. I Live in the UK, so shipping maybe an issue, as i dont know of hardly any major Arcade manufacturers  here in the UK

as you are in the u.k you can buy from suzo, brent spares, pentranic and hantarex-you can find them all on the net.
i am a big fan of hantarex, and you can buy direct from them(they are at sydenham hill, london)

Looked at the Hantarex site, but not sure with type of monitor would work best for MAME, either the CT EQ/3 (like a TV, they seem to have a few of these on ebay at the moment),  MTC EQ\3 (more like a Arcade monitor) or the Polo Gaming monitor. I will be using a AVGA card with it. Also any ideas on prices?? My TV i have in the cab at the moment is surpossed to be a 28", but the screen measurement size is more like 27", so if i cant sort out my display problem with my TV will defently want one of these Hantarex monitors

the polostar is not a digital chassis so although it auto ranges the frequency it does not have the facilty to save settings-but you have to decide how good a picture you want and also how much you want to spend-is there any reason you prefer an arcade monitor as opposed to a pc monitor?
i must add the picture quality of the polostar is fabulous,we have this monitor fitted on tokyo cops, ring riders and atv tracks, the definition is very good-it is superior to sanwa and neotec, also the backup from hantarex is particulary good for spares, repairs and advice
as for costing just e-mail them, best to deal direct-if you go through a distributor then you will pay 20 percent more

the polostar have a remote board for adjustments so you can site it anywhere in the cab,if you go ahead and order one just make sure you request the remote extension cable

no,frequency of signal input-you have 15k,25k,31k,35k and 38k,these are picture signal input frequency going from lowest graphic reproduction to the best available now
in theory you can run a polostar straight from any graphics card and it should auto frequency the picture to its optimum setting,so you should not require a arcade vga
your best bet is to email hantarex and tell them exactly what you want to do with the monitor and your cabinet setup-for instance if you are running only one game at lets say 31k(svga) then the monitor will run perfect but if you have many different games connected at different frequencies then it would have to auto range them
in my opinion the polostar should run perfectly ok with a good graphics card, like i said we have a few and i am very impressed with the quality

Just read the review of the Betson on RetroBlast, and am quite tempted, is 27" screen the largest they do?, as my current TV screen i have is 28", though disgard the black frame that goes round the edge of the screen then it is 27" screen. I guess it is a 28" screen but only 27" viewable?? Dont surpose theres anyone who stocks Betson in the UK?

Betson OEMs the Kortek KT-2914 as their "Betson Digital Multisync".  Kortek is a korean manufacturer, but I believe they have worldwide sales reps.  I've been fairly happy with mine.  The only problem I've noted is its handling of composite sync on some signals (TMNT is fine, MK][ isn't) - using separate sync fixes things.

You can buy larger monitors from Kortek themselves.  They go up to at least 33" as Pump It Up GX cabinets use a flat direct view CRT from Kortek in that size.

I just bought the Billabs 27" at the Atlanta Auction this weekend.  Absolutely love the thing.

But you are right in that the older games really look too good on it.  No scan lines or whatever they are called.
