Console Choice for driving cabinet
« on: July 12, 2006, 11:56:15 pm »
Have recently acquired what will become a console orientated driving cabinet.

I am seeking views on exactly which console to use - PS2 or X-box?

I am leaning towards a modded x-box so that I can load on versions of original games that I own to switch between without having to load and unload discs etc etc.

I am also wondering on advice re:hacking a steering wheel for use in this project
Questions
What sort of steering wheels are available. (I was thinking of a mad catz 2)
Although from the picture it is obvious that the project already has a wheel.
Can I use this one with a console??

Unless you are a die hard Gran Turismo fan, and you just CANNOT live without it (which is very possible), go with an Xbox.

But in the true spirit of excess that this board loves so very much.... I say do both :)  If I had to choose one though, it'd be the Xbox
first off your and idiot

If you go Xbox don't forget Rallisport Challenge.  It wasn't nearly as successful as it deserved to be.  Probably the best rally racing game ever made.

I second that!

Also, as I'm sure you know, there's MAME for the XBOX.  Haven't tried a wheel with it but if it does work there's a few games there you can play too!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

And here I am trying to keep the cost down...
Really though having both would make it difficult to use a hacked wheel for both systems wouldn't it??

Thanks for the advice my 9 year old has an x-box already with MAME on it.

I will once ready to race, start a thread for advice on best drving games

Very nice racing cab you got there.

I'd get 3 PS2's (cheap now), with 3 copies of Grand Turismo 3 or 4, and 3 large monitors for surround view driving.

Now that sounds like a quick easy option.. :-\

I'm definately going to go with an xbox seeing as a new one was recently advertised at $99 Aus..

This will only ensure an improved model xbox will also come within my price range quicker..

Thanks for the advice Snaake I will look this wheel up to see if its available downunder...

I'll be watching you close on this one.  I'm researching alternatives for my next project.

The box already has pedals, nice find.  Do you know if they are analog (variable resistor) or digital (switch)?

So SNAAKE likes the Fanatic 3 wheel.  Anyone else agree or disagree?

If you are going with an Xbox, then there is no wheel better than the Fanatec Speedster 3: Forceshock.

The Logitech Driving Force Pro does spank the ever lovin crap out of it, but it is PS2 & PC only.

Since I personally love the racers on the Xbox more than those on PS2 (I have no experience with them on PC, as my PC is a clunker that certainly doesn't race), and if I was building a racing cab, the Fanatec is the wheel that would call it home.

No Idea yet...
I will have to go out to the shed and take a look this weekend...I will post a photo or to when I do.
Although if I go with the Xbox / Xbox steering wheel combo they come with pedals which you would probably have to use...

No force feedback wheel for the xbox is a killer though.

Nope

It would be great to have "real" force feedback that bases its forces off of specific game data like the PS2 and the Driving Force Pro, but the Fanatec Speedster 3 ForceShock wheel does a pretty amazing job at giving you "fake" force feedback.

If building a racing cab, I'd easily choose the better racers of the Xbox with the "fake" force feedback of the fanatec over the PS2's offerings. (Again, I yield to the subject of PC racers, because I haven't played any there in about 7-8 years.)

[EDIT]

Note:

I only say fake, because it is not giving you forces off of force specific game data. It is giving you actual motor driven feedback. It just bases it off of the same signal used for the standard rumble of the Xbox controllers.

This doesn't give you the precision in its effects that you get from the PS2/GT4/DFP combo, but it is still pretty good.

Make it with swappable wheels, hook up both consoles. Racing heaven.

Ok as promised went out to the shed to look at the pedals (It has 3???)
From the photo it would appear that they are the variable resistor type that you mentioned... Although in all honesty I have NFI...

If you can tell from the photo and have some useful advice..
Please let me know.

As for the debate re: steering wheel,
