Emulaxian launching uncontrollably
« on: March 06, 2003, 11:24:22 pm »
Hello all,

I've got emulaxian installed and gamelists generated. I've got my skin set up so that feintro and feexit are unset to speed up debugging.

For some reason, when I start the fe, it automatically starts 1941 (the first game in the favourites list) and no matter how many times I escape from it, it relaunches it indefinitely until I kill emulaxian from the task manager.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Paul

which version are you using?

weird the fe launches on key up or a double mouse click...

(if it is the beta then it might be the random game launcher that kicks in without delay when it is not configered...i will check that)

Hi Peter,

It's not the beta, although I will try that tonight and let you know how it works out.

I have another interesting detail that might provide a clue. If I delete the 1941 rom, the start-up of it fails of course. If I send a keystroke to the dosbox, it gives me the "finished" dialog. When I ok it, I'm in your fe and it seems to work very well. When I go to choose any other game, for example scrolling the favourites down to ms pacman, then press 1-start to submit, it seems to be fine. However, when I escape out of ms-pacman, the rigamarole starts again, resubmitting it continously.

HTH. Will try the beta tonight.

if it is not the beta then i am a bit confused...because it can only launch on key up ie you have to release the start key to get it to launch...

what version of mame are you using? and which os?

by the way i will release a new beta later today beta 4 i suggest to try that one ;-)

Hi Peter,

I'm using advmame 0.65 under windows 98. I'll try your newest beta tonight and post a much better bug report now that I understand that this is not a faq! :-)

Thanks

you can post on the 3darcade forum if you want or contact me directly by email :-)

advance mame...win98...mmm...my old configuration...the only thing i remember was that i had to set the altsound option in fe.cfg to true.

just to make sure you could try the fe also with the regular commandline win32 build of mame...so we know if it is an advance mame related issue

Could it be possible your 1 Player Start button is sticking or shorted? That would continuously send a start command.

Hi Birdtales,

This was indeed my first suspicion; but I think I've ruled that out in the following way:

(1) once in the game, the game play is normal. I can insert quarters and the game doesn't start automatically. It only starts once I press player 1 start.
(2) in windows, in notepad, the "1" key doesn't continuously get typed.
(3) once I delete the 1941 rom and exit the doscmd, navigation within emulaxian is normal --- i.e. I can scroll down many games and a game will only start once I press player1 start. However, at that point, the game will continuosly restart uncontrollably.

Umm... no, I didn't. :-) Could that possibly cause this? Hard to imagine, but I will certainly add that to my to-try list for tonight.

Paul

http://3darcade.mameworld.net/fe078beta.zip

you will probsbly have to cut and past the link because mameworld does not allow external linking

but it should not behave differently then 0.77...I would be very surprised if it would ;-)

Peter - I'm sorry! I'm unable to reproduce my problem today. As far as I know, the only difference is that the system was rebooted.

I am still having problems on the info screen - i get script has errors do you wish to continue. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

in the infoscreen, the one that displays history.dat etc ?

a script error is in most cases a small error in the configuration...but the infoscreen I think will only give a script error if history.dat is not found in the fe folder. (In the past also not having quicktime installed on your system could give a script error there because i did not check for it)

if you can's spot the cfg error and you can reproduce it each time then just zip the \cfg\ folder up and mail it to me..errors like that should be easy to spot then to talk about  ;)

one more try talking about it because I don't have any easy way to take data off my cab -- no cd-r, no floppy! :-)

It reproduces consistently. It happens shortly after the cab snapshot is displayed if I have one. The ui displays "searching", then the error, then the mameinfo data.

This tends to back the history.dat theory. However, I've placed them just about everywhere trying to troubleshoot this problem! :-) I have history.dat files in mame's root folder, in the emulaxian root folder, in the femame.cfg info folder, and in the cfg folder.

I still get this error. Any ideas? If not, I'll rip a floppy out of another system and send along my cfg folder zipped up!

Thanks.

hehe...it expects history.dat in the root of the fe...a version ships with the so I doubt that is the problem...

try unzipping the fe in a new folder...run it..got to the info screen...should work out of the box without touching any cfg file...if it gives an error i suspect there is no quicktime on your machine..if so my check for quicktime code does not work properly ;-)
