Looking For: Lightgun + Component TV Mame success stories
« on: June 06, 2006, 12:14:21 pm »
Ok - I have done alot of research over a year ago regarding the use of lightguns and Mame, but now I am very close to actually implementing what I have learned and am looking for more info and successful setups for tips before I actually invest the last bit of money.

My video card is an ATI 8500 AIW, which is capable of using an adapter to get component output off the DVI.

Adapter here (less expensive than ATI's part) $10 vs $30

I also plan on using this 24" 4:3 TV and mounting it at 90 degrees, I do not plan on decasing.

I am pretty sure I need to hook up the lightgun on the Green line of the component video.  However, do I still need to set the video card to 15 khz using the adapter for component out?

Would love to see examples and hear stories of successful setups similiar to what I plan on doing.

Sorry I don't have info to help with your lightgun questions, but I must say that TV is a find for $139!  Can you let us know how you like it?  Also does it remember your last channel (ie. stays on aux) when you power off completely and power back on?  I'm also wondering about decasing (it's too wide for my cab) but I guess you're not doing that.  I've been dying for someone to show the difference in vid quality between s-video and component TV input.

Here is a quick comparison re: S-video and component on a non-HD TV

In the pacman picture you can see a pretty obvious difference, the MK2 pics there are definately differences, but not as obvious until you really look the pics for a while.

If you look at the MK2 pics, particularly subzero and scorpion masks, there is a noticeable difference in the detail that shows up between the two.  Also on the

OK - since no success stories, how about miserable failures?

That is what my parents call me. Doesn't have anything to do with guns, though.

This all depends on what light gun you plan to use...

1: Guncon2 or "TV" act labs.

You can use the Green component connector instead of a "video out" from the gfx card, so long as you are outputting a component signal that is around 15khz.

2: PC USB actlabs

In theory this will still work on the green connector, but you need to use 31Khz horizontal sync rates - which I don't think will work with the tv you listed.

3: LCD Topguns.

Works whatever you do as does not use the video signal at all.

I have the 27" version, and it does in fact stay on component in after turning off and back on.

Sorry to keep hijacking this....
I just got back from Best Buy and checked that TV out.  The 24" model listed by rbarr110 does not remember the AV input last selected and always goes back to channel 4 or whatever it was.  They had another flatscreen 24" Insignia with component input that DID remember the input when turned off and on, but it was $180 or so.  And of course as you say, the 27" remembered too.  None of the TVs powered back on when unplugged and plugged back in, but instead went into a standby mode.  Is there some way to fix that in the service menu or something?
