You need to expand your horizons on your color choices. Here's one of my favorite tools:
Color Schemer - just type in the RGB value of your main color (such as your background color) and the schemer comes up with a palette that works well with it. It was primarily disigned for websites, but it works well for menus, CPO's, etc.
I would suggest a bolder font for your text. It's possible to get the whimsical look you desire in a font with more visual weight.
Take the 3D textures off those paint splotches - paint may have depth, but not that much depth.
