Project 'Terminus' finally on it's way!
« on: April 18, 2006, 07:08:39 am »
Hi all,

After weeks of planning, tweaking and cursing - here's my attempt at an arcade machine.  It's going to be called 'Terminus', literally meaning 'the final point' as it's taking so long that my girlfriend says I can't make any more after this one!

The machine is built in 2 parts - a base which was a last minute modification to house the bass speaker and XBOX and a top half which could sit on a tabletop if I ever ran low on space.

It's 1-player mainly as I don't have a huge amount of space to put it in my flat but I am going to have a secondary controller stored in the base for the ocassional 2-player game.

Anyway - any comments (positive or critical!) are always appreciated!

3D Renders...

And the cabinet (almost) fully built...

Thanks - here's a couple more.

The red t-moulding is just there as I was testing my routing - it will be replaced by white t-moulding once it's delivered.

The speaker shelf isn't painted black - it has 2 speakers covered by speaker cloth which works really well (and also useful for hiding the top of the bezel once I get it painted and perspexed.

I'd just like to say.....

Good renders! Looks really good - did you base that design off anything?

Very interesting! :)

What is your bezel made from?

Thanks for the feedback guys

Going 1 player was a pretty difficult choice but in the end it was down to space constraints and the size TV I had.  An additional controller will be stored in the base for when I do want to play 2 player but the idea of this was machine was to cover as many different varieties of single player as possible.

As for the bezel - it's 10mm thick MDF.  I cut a hole for the screen and then bordered the inside with 20mm strips of pine.  This prevents you seeing any of the TV at all.  It took a bit of sanding to get completely flush but I'm really pleased with how it's turning out.  At the moment I'm debating how to mount the LED strips for the guns but I think there's already another topic for that so I'll put any developments there.

I didn't consciously base it on any other cabs but was definately inspired by some of them, namely the curved marquee (I can't remember where I saw it).  I'm actually in the process of cutting the slot for the marquee now which is proving slightly more tricky than I thought...  :-\

I'll post more pics once I've got the marquee in place.

Very nice work, I like the look of the cab.  :applaud:

I had a similar idea for my speaker placement but was not able to find any speaker material locally. Where did you get yours?

I would like to see some dimensions and more pics if possible  ;D

BTW whats the size on the marquee light, is it a standard 18"? It just appears a bit small in the pics.

Once again great cab

Very unique design.. the white and blue look great together.

Hopefully the finished machine will live up to those high-end renderings.  :)

The striplight was something I had from an old machine but I never used it so fitted it to see how it would look - it's about 30cm (12").  I might put a wider one in once I've got the marquee finished depending on how dark it is in the corners.

I'll get the accurate dimensions up once I've translated the render to illulstrator but it's approx 180cm high, 80 cm deep and 54cm wide.

The speaker cloth I got from Maplin:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?TabID=1&criteria=cloth&ModuleNo=17725&doy=18m4

So far the dimensions of the cab are coming on really well and pretty much spot on the render.  Now it's all about getting the finish right and not rushing it now I'm so close to the end!   :)

Nice job, I wouldn't have thought about using mdf but I guess if it's thin enough it should work fine. I might try that on mine as well once I get that far.

That's a really nice design. I like the curved marquee area and I think it's pretty cool how it's only a 1 player machine. Definitely a unique design.

It's 9am. I'm calling it a nite.
