Tron Cocktail Restoration
« on: April 05, 2006, 02:24:13 pm »
Hello all,

I just picked up this Tron Cocktail at an Auction, I think I paid too much for the condition its in ($394).  Its in sad shape, but I really love the game and feel its unique to have the cocktail version.

Maybe a little too unique, its not gonna be easy to restore based on parts availability, its completely missing the #1 control panel, #2 is complete.  Hasn't worked since who knows when, missing the MCR power supply board and the cabinet is trashed.  It needs lots of work.  I'd like to get it working before I tear it down for a complete redo.

The biggest obstacle I see so far is the joystick replacement.  Looks exculsive to the Tron/Satan's Hollow cocktail models.

Does anybody on this list have a lead on to this type joystick?  Looks like a regular red Midway joystick with a black trigger on the front.

I need this and or the complete panel with spinner/wiring.

Does sound a bit overpriced, but hey, turn that lemon into lemonade!

I used to consistently see those joys on ebay though I don't see one on at the moment.

Good luck and get some pics.  ;)

there is a guy who seems to regularly sell them on ebay for $55.  I found one disassembled in a lot-auction pretty cheap.  You just need to hit ebay regularly.  Markrvp has a couple, ask him where he got them...

Mark's "full frontal" pic from the Tron Repro thread on Main.

Here are the rest in that thread.

Appreciatate some of the response, I have a couple things on the way to see if I can spark life to this thing.  Hopefully, the PCB is good, it looks untouched, we'll see.  I'll try to start putting pics up soon, temporary not on-line at home though.

If anybody gets a lead on a joystick please let me know, I've already have this picture in head of this machine looking good and working but missing one piece to make it complete.  I know it's gonna take some time to aquire one.

BTW- I'm new to the BYOAC list but not new to the MAME/Arcade seen.  Built a cool MAME cocktail with no spared expense 18months ago.  Multi hot swap panels, vertical/horizonal positions etc. I'll post pics of that soon also.

Update:

Ordered a missing MCR panel and a spinner with wiring out of an apright from Quarterarcade.com.  I was surprised after soldering in the AA battery and wiring in a missing power card that it actually worked, fired right up like it was yesterday.  Looks horrible, neglected for a long time like it may have been sitting for years in a warehouse, It was probably close to a part out considering the cabinet shape.  But making it look good shouldn't be too hard, just start from the ground up and that's what I'm now in the process of.

Once running and in attract mode, couldn't play the game because of the #1 control panel missing.  Swapped over the #2 panel to the #1 position and wired the pins to do 1&2 player start.  It worked, registered a few credits and played a few rounds to try it out.

Decided it was time to start tearing it down to do a full restore.  I carefully took it completely apart and I mean completely apart, only the ground wire was left stapled in the cabinet.  Cabinet chewed up bad on the bottom, had missing legs that probably didn't help.  Started sanding but seemed very time consuming.  Decided to use a few cans of MEK stripper I had laying around.  Worked great taking the veneer off.  Pulled out the router and removed the bad sections on the bottom, ready for nailing good pieces to replace the bad.
Priced walnut veneer and T-molding.   Stripped the "one" control panel currently posessed.  Thinking about replacing the glass and the monitor, both look like crap.  Monitor has burn-in really bad.  In pieces and stripped of the veneer finish at the moment.

Happy that it worked, still need another joystick and a fabricated control panel for reassembly time.

Keeping eyes open for hard to find Joystick, hopefully soemone will come to rescue soon.  pics to come
