I'm sitting 3 feet from a 100% original Space Duel if you have any questions I can help with.

They don't sell the LED cone buttons anymore and haven't even made them in 20 years.  It is one of the more coveted classic arcade items now.

I can't scan the CP but I could probably get you some decent pics if you want.  Or I bet that CPO can be bought at some online retailer.  I'd be surprised if it's not available someplace, maybe in the arcade vector library.

I honestly don't know how good a TV would look trying to emulate a vector game.  You're not only going to a nonvector but you're going to an analog delivery which is going to hurt it further.  Gotta say, though, if you're going to try with a TV, why not a 25"?  That cab can probably fit one.

EDIT:  Now that I think about it, you may be better off using a computer monitor if you're not going to try to get a vector... at least then you can crank up the contrast more.

I agree with Chadtower.  Definately use a decased 19" CRT PC monitor....if your converting to Mame.

Arcadeshop Amusements have Space Duel CPO's.  Quartercade have a Space Duel CPO as well as 2 full control panels.  One is in excellent condition (just needs a clean) It's populated.... but no cone's.  The other is fairly crappy.... but populated WITH cones.  May be a bit pricey.. so search around for original panels.  IMO you definately want to stay original theme externally.. ie metal cpo.

From the sounds of Santoro's initial thread on this cab a while back, the sideart is not recoverable? Pity.

If needed, TNT Amusements have a Space Duel Marquee.   Check out Bob Roberts for the buttons. Check ebay for the Atari Cone Switches/buttons and/or any other parts.  In fact if you check ebay now...you'll find some nice stuff! ;)

As for your coin door...if I'm reading it correctly...rewire it back up, when it's restored, and use it in the cab through Mame...

Good Luck.

definitely the nearest look you will get to a vector monitor is a pc monitor. there's only one reason i know that you would use a tv for a vector game (and this is a clue for bones)

Agree with PC monitor and eBay for cones ... they show up from time to time in "parts lot" listings ... there was such an auction  last week that had two cones w/ buttons in it ... I spent 7 days as the high bidder at $3.99 until the last 10 seconds.

..............and if i did get the boardset i wouldnt be able to use it with a pc monitor right?

Right.

IMO, get her back looking asthetically like she was.... obviously without the side art.. again pity!!, and mame her up with a nice Space Duel themed frontend.    mmmmm... sounds good already!  :)

You can then make a duplicate control panel (take the one you get  ;)  to a sheet metal shop and get a replica pressed up) and make another modified panel with joystick(s), trackball, whatever

A modified Space Duel CPO is up at the AAL and you could mod it again for your own theme......http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=887&mode=search

Then you could have her looking original or slightly modded..depending on who comes round to play!!  :)

Just an idea.....or maybe I'm rambling again!?  ::)

i wanted to buy a vector monitor but ive read they arent long lasting.  also no one in jersey has one to sell apparently.

If they are updated and maintained they last as long as any arcade monitor.  The picture, though, is unique and cannot be properly duplicated with any other type of monitor.

just checked ebay and someone is selling a space duel cab, its cp complete, and the pcb boards all separate.  im thinking of getting the pcb boardset though for the power supply i have (original i believe) is there another cab that would uses the same type? and if i did get the boardset i wouldnt be able to use it with a pc monitor right?  though i dont like how he doesnt have a shipping calculator for the cp.  though i think it would be maybe 20 to have shipping.

though im probably just going to get the cp and use mame.

If you want a real PCB set you're going to be best off searching for Space Duel parts.  The most commonly parted out vector cab and probably the color game with the most manufactured.

Hey chad for the back door is the lock center and there are only two screws right?  and no hinges correct?  i started working on the back door in shop today.  going to have to glue 4 7 inch wide boards together and cut them down to 23 and 12/16.  thanks.

You'd be better off making the back door out of MDF like the rest of the cab...

But yes, the lock is at horizontal center with two screws, not that that matters all that much so long as what you put in works properly.  No hinges, it is fully removable.

i would rather use one piece of mdf instead of pieces of wood but i have to use whats available to me.  do you know or can find out what kind of screws are used to keep the back on.  also on the top of the back theres a 2 by 1 inch hole where the lock cam would turn behind.  how should i fill it in so i can still lock it?  i was thinking of replacing the top part id rather keep the part.  thanks.

o and im trying to setup spaceduel on my pc to run at dos startup but it only auto starts when i select restart from the start menu in 98se.  but when i try pure dos i have to type the commands.  i added cd \mame and mame spacduel -soundcard 0 (need a dos based sound card for the four speakers still) any ideas.

It is not held in with screws.  I don't know the carpentry term for what holds the door in but it's the same as any other cab.

What you want is to put the mame commands in autoexec.bat.  That gets executed once DOS starts.

The back door is coming along well though i wont be perfectly flat since i glued 4 boards of wood together (all i had access to) and was curious what the parts are called and look like and where to get them that hold the back door on.  i know theres a lock on the top center but in the top corners there are holes and thats how i have to keep the door on.

Ive searched for the correct locks sizes for my space duel's back door but cant find it on google.  also the size i purchased for the coin door didnt fit so does anyone know the size for over under door used by it (not sure if its a standard over under)?

and can someone please point me towards a template for the cp?  i want to start drilling the holes for the buttons but dont know the spacings.

thanks.

What sizes did you buy?  I would think 7/8" for the coin door, but I'd have to see it.  Possible it's 1 1/8".

Don't think it really matters, anyway, you could make either one work just fine.  what do I have to measure to find out for him on mine?

ive found a template for the cp so i will just print that out and tape it the cp im making and drill the holes based on that.

the lock i bought was a 5/8" ultility lock from home depot so it has to be just a bit smaller unless this is the correct size then im incorrectly insserting it.

for the back door i  have it cut to the right dimensions but im not sure what the lock size is and based on some pics there is a handle slot on the bottom that i would need measured (from bottom of door and width and height the the slot itself).

thanks and i should have a decent set of plans for a temp wood cp for a space duel by the end of next week.

Smaller?  I would have thought 7/8".

Doesn't really matter anyway so long as it physically fits the door he cut.  All the door is is a piece of MDF with a wood stop that prevents it from falling out.

i dont just the back door lock size also the coin door lock sizes as well.  for the back ill probably just use the 5/8 since i already have it.

so then all i need is what size locks for the coin door and is there a handle or vent on the lower part of the back door.  thanks.

Of course it matters; if the lock isn't long enough it's not going to do *anything*.

thats where i have a problem though.  i held it agianst the side of the back door and it isnt long enough so im going to get a replacement that is long enough.  also the reason the lock wouldnt fit on my coin door was the shape was wrong (supposed to be round sides and flat top and bottom, mine was just round) so ill try and find ones that match better.

also the pushbuttons for leaf switch and the micro are the similar enough that i could use them either way?  thanks.

They're $3.75 each, shipped.

The front ones are *likely* 7/8" long, and the back 1 1/8", though you may need an offset cam (or you may not; I dunno).  Let's see if I can dig up a picture of Space Duel...

Ah, okay, over/under.  7/8" for top and bottom.  Not sure about the back, is the panel 3/4"?

yep the back is 3/4" and i dont think i need an offset though im probably wrong.  when i last checked the back it appeared as if the lock would line up with where it would catch.

I keep debating with myself whether I should pick up a vector monitor and restore the Space Duel with side art that I kept.  It would be expensive as hell, but I haven't played a true vector game in 20 years, it really was a unique experience.

Worst case, get a really high res low dot pitch PC monitor and put MAME with Asteroids/Space Duel/ Asteroids Deluxe and a few others in it.

Well i have my back door in ..... kinda.  It is a bit too tall so i need to trim it down a little.

I have a 17inch monitor that im going to use (its crt) and im curious how should i mount it so if i need to move the cab it wont slide.

I keep debating with myself whether I should pick up a vector monitor and restore the Space Duel with side art that I kept.  It would be expensive as hell, but I haven't played a true vector game in 20 years, it really was a unique experience.

IMO definately try to track down a vector mon for her (if money persists).. you know you won't be dissapointed when she's up and running....

Mind you.....CT's idea is very tasty... especially with a nice Space Duel/Asteroids front-end theme... 8)
