KEEP YOUR PIMP HAND STRONG.

I don't get it, were your wives like this before you got married? I'm 23 currently have a gf for about 5 years now. We are most likely going to get married in the coming years. Right now she is cool as hell never gives me crap on anything I want to do? Does it really change that much when your married? all of a sudden your "allowed" or "not allowed" to do things? Hell with that I'm a man damnit...

It's normally revolving around money.  You get married, get a house, have kids, etc...  That means less money to do things for fun like build a Mame cabinet, buy a new decked out computer, etc...

But of course if your wife/gf is really into video games as well, then she might see it as a great project.

Frankly any woman that told me 'you can't have an arcade machine' or whatever else I may like would not be the kind of person I would want to be involved with.  I would never see it my place to tell other people what they can/can't have.

If your current bird is OK you should be fine...just don't let her take the piss or she'll be walking all over you when you're married.

  • I promise sweetie, this is my last cab purchase
I agree with kelemvor.  When you first get married you have the coin for stuff like arcade cabs, etc.  Then the house and kids come, and that "disposable income" you had ain't so disposable anymore.

This is true. It's no so much she's saying "I COMMAND that you do not have a arcade cabinet!" It's more along the lines of "The kid needs school clothes, the house needs a roof, etc. - it's all a matter of priorities. It's hard to justify spending the money on a cabinet when their are more important things to have done.

Now, some of the other things - like not being able to put it in a warm place in the house... well, thats a fight I'm willing to fight!

  • If the magic smoke gets out, it won't work again!
My restrictions come from life, not my wife.

Money, Space in the house, time, are all restrictions on my cab building.

She may think my idea is a bad idea, but she won't stop me, unless it is a really BAD idea....can't pay mortgage, b/c of the new 27" arcade monitor....taking kids to Saturday tee-ball games, instead of spending all Saturday at the arcade auction...etc.

I may joke and make my wife out to be a dictator, but that's mainly to tease her (she hates it)

Basically she knows that I bring home the most money, and she spends the most time watching our 4 kids.

Neither of us wants piss the other one off too much

Make sense?

<looking around to see if my wife is nearby>...

I have to agree, it's typically not so much about your wife not wanting you to enjoy your hobby. It's usually about money/space/time concerns. One of the differences between marriage and dating is that you are operating off of a combined income when you're married.

For my wife, it's pretty much a space issue. We live in a small bungalow, so whenever I bring home a new arcade toy (like my new vector monitor), she gets a little pissed. But, at the same time she doesn't mind me spending time on my hobby.

Its for the kids............yeah yeah.

If it was up to me, I wont build one.  The kids keep bugging me so much and i am sick of hearing about it, so I just decided to build not one but two full size cabs.

Oh the baby you say, well once I have completed the other cabs, I will start his mini one

Again it is not for me

Dude, if that's really your advice to the married men on this board, then I hope you marry a girl who can kick the living sh*t out of you. (And it's a pretty tacky joke even if you're not serious. Grow up.)

Time is the main issue when it comes to building an arcade cabinet.  I work a lot (out of necessity) so I don't get home until after 9 p.m. most nights.  I only really get to see the kid on the weekend or for 30 minutes in the mornings before work so during my free time I want to spend as much time as possible with her.  This basically leaves Friday and Saturday nights to spend with my wife and the last thing she wants me to do is go down in the basement and tinker away especially when she is home all week by herself with only a 1 year old to keep her company...

I'm glad I build my cabinet before I got married.  She couldn't complain about how much it cost or how long it took when I built it on my own without her around.  Now that we're married she always complains about how much room it takes up and how ugly it is.  But she always brags to her coworkers that we have an arcade cabinet and invites them over to play and drink beer out of the kegerator.

So when it's just the two of us it's a stupid waste of space, but she brags about it to her friends/co-workers  ???

C'mon you guys.  Everyone knows its not whether or not you are allowed to build an arcade cabinet.

It's whether or not you'll still get sex, your laundry done, your meals cooked, if you build an arcade cabinet.

She's not saying you can't build it.  But often going against one's wife's wishes results in a temporary cut back in fringe benefits.

I must be the luckiest man alive.  I got a sports car last year and an arcade cabinet this year.  When my kids are a little older, I'm getting a boat.  My wife never tells me no.  She's also the biggest user of the arcade cabinet.  If scientist ever become proficient at cloning, perhaps I could sell copies of her.

Here's my view...if I don't keep my spending reigned in, I lose all ground I may have had to stand on to impede her from not spending willy-nilly.

In essence, I know that if I went balls to the wall nuts and dropped a few grand over the course of a week on arcade stuff I would have no way to stop her from buying 8 freaking bazillion pairs of shoes.

(Seriously...how can women wear 500 pairs of shoes?  AND keep buying them.  I think they just throw them away from time to time after wearing them for 20 minutes...)

Oh, and Mike, send me some skin scrapings :).

I'm 23 currently have a gf for about 5 years now.

Ah, to be young and in love, foolish and naive ... sigh ...

Everybody is dead right about RealLife(tm) and the associated RealBills(tm) and RealDemands(tm). When I was 23, I had a great condo on the lake with a Pop-A-Shot and foosball where my dining room should have been. It was great for a single guy, but doesn't make a lot of sense for a couple, let alone a family. You need a place to eat.

Now, I am fortunate:

1) I have a wife who fully supports my "hobsession" (she was skeptical at first) and has recommended that I fill the basement with "as many games as you want"
2) I earn enough to support those wishes (it wasn't always that way) and have tons of time to spend with my wife and kids
3) I have enough space in the basement to house the hulking beasts where they don't interfere with the rest of our lives

If, however, I neglect my duties as provider, father or husband, I would expect her to come crashing down on my head like a freaking anvil.

And that is exactly what she would (and should) do.

Cheers.

It's mostly down to the $$ and the space to put it.  If you have both of those she probably won't care as much.  I have both and I didn't get any flak for building mine.

I could see why any spouse or gf would say no when it comes to space and money. Yet there are ways around this. I got a space issue (until the rec room has a roof on it) so I am building a three sided cocktail table. If money is an issue than work on it a little at a time. Hell, Ive been working on mine for 6 months and am only half finished because I can only spend about 80 bucks a month on it.

Sometimes this hobby is depressing. I'm close to $600 in the hole and can only stare at my half finished cab. Furthermore, it takes up more room not finished than it would if it were done. This is because of tools and un attached parts.

IF MY WIFE TOLD ME I COULDNT BUILD A CAB I WOULD GO TO THE JUNKYARD, FIND AN OLD FRIGERATER, BRING IT HOME AND DUMP IT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HALLWAY, FILL IT FULL OF BRICKS, CHAIN IT CLOSED, THEN POSIOION IT JUST RIGHT SO YA GOTTA SQUEEZ AGAINST THE WALL TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.

This should desensitise her to space limitations. A nice looking cab in a out of the way spot will seem minor. PROBLEM SOLVED! Ya gotta think smart not hard.

If this don't work ya might want to look to Chuck Norris for some tips on woman.
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

Amen.

Treat your woman well (and try to spend more time with her than with your cabinet), and everything else falls into place (money and other requirements notwithstanding).

I'm consistently amazed by the guys I know who will take a slapshot in the b@!!$ to win a game of pickup hockey, yet can't be bothered to hang out with the kids for the evening so their wives can have a night out.

???  Zod was banned for a reason.  If you choose to not remember that he continued to post racist comments, that's up to you but it doesn't change the facts of the situation.  I remember it quite well and have copies of the threads before they were sent to Post Hell.

If you are bothered that I would make "racist accusations" about Zod, that's your choice, but the facts are on my side.

Lots of good stuff already said, but I thought I'd expound on it.  Once married, the rules change a little bit - suddenly, the money, the house, the stuff is "ours", not "mine" and "yours".  So I don't just decide to re-arrange a room in the house, throw out furniture I don't like, and build three arcade cabinets before having a "team meeting".  Just like I'd appreciate it if she doesn't roll the arcade cabinet out to the back porch because she doesn't like where it's placed - a little communication and cooperation is called for.  It's basic respect - not that everyone has it.

Of course, it's also guy code to blame everything on "my wife won't let me".
Clones are people, two.

I'm confident that Zod wasn't a slave owner either, but that didn't make his racist jokes acceptable.

When did everyone on this board lose their sense of humor.  Everybody take a deep breath, stick the racist accusations in your back pocket, and go build an arcade control and then come back when you're being reasonable again.

I am bothered that you are making accusations about me.  I see no justification for quoting me and using Zod to back it up.  I think it was in poor taste to try and paint me with that brush.
