What would you buy?
« on: January 25, 2006, 09:16:19 pm »
I have some extra funds to purchase one or two games but I'm undecided on what to get.  Below is a list of some games that a local seller is selling.... What would you get?

Here are the options:

- Super Sprint (Probably get that as it would go in my racing theme games room)

- Dedicated Karate Champ (Nice classic I used to play)

- Tron (Good working condition)

- Bagman (Classic I used to play, which is n good condition)

- Spy Hunter  (Which plays but need some minor work to make complete)

- Track and Field cocktail (But I play this game in mame...)

- Operation Wolf (Always wanted a shooting game, but is this the one?)

- Turbo Out Run (Which has force feedback issues)

IF that T&F cocktail is the one I am thinking of (e.g. kidflash's), then that would be my choice ... unless you're now thinking of a particular Dragon's Lair or Robotron or Millipede (Multipede, anybody?) that just became available (we'll see if that lasts) ... but then, I already have a Tron ... project.

At least pick up Tron and Spyhunter.

Consider:

When you are buying an arcade cabinet, you're not really buying the game.  The game itself can be played on any number of platforms, including 100% accurate emulation on a MAME cab or PC.  What you are buying, essentially, is the cabinet and controller.  You are buying the arcade experience of the game.  You can't emulate the cabinet, the lighting, the bezel, the controller, etc etc.  If you could then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

With that in mind, we come down to the games on that list where the cabinet is an integral part of the experience:  Spy Hunter, Super Sprint, Turbo Out Run, Operation Wolf, and Tron

Turbo Out Run has force feedback, Operation Wolf is a gun game, and Spy Hunter has a great controller.  Tron has BY FAR the best cabinet on this list, and for that matter, one of the great cabinets and controllers of all time.  Super Sprint is a multiplayer driver with a common style wheel.

My recommendation is definitely Tron.  The cabinet just seems to represent so much of the very best of the early arcade experience.

I never had a Tron, but I heard they take alot of mainenance.

They have parts go out all the time.

Williams games are like that. I love Joust, but it always needs some tweaking.

For those games that won't stay running, I have no issue with people putting the boardset on their shelf and inserting an old PC with MAME for a more reliable dedicated game... nothing irreversible, of course, but it's basically a technology upgrade.

I'd have a tough decision to make between the T&F and the Tron.  The Spy Hunter would probably get some thought too.

I think I'd go with the T&F though... and the Tron if I could swing it :)

I've only seen the pictures ... it looks clean and is one of a very few machines that I prefer in the cocktail version (Joust and the old Atari games being the others).

The sudden abundance of classics, coupled with the low prices at the last SB auction, in SW Ontario has me dazed and confused (I really wanted that Dragon's Lair ... and Terry's MultiWilliams ... and) .... Sadly, I have neither the budget nor the space to capitalize on this glut of games (I'm almost sick about those Afterburner simulator cockpits .. $50 for both!!).

At least no one is selling a Star Wars cockpit ... that would really depress me.

Good luck with the Super Sprint.

Cheers.

I say, if you're not all that good with pcb repair, get the tron, put the boards on a shelf, and put a low Pentium in there with MAME emulating the game.  Functionally the same and a lot more reliable.  Just make sure you preserve the existing boards too.

If I buy a dictated Tron cab, why would I want to take the pcb out and put in a pc instead?  As I could spent less money to get a tron joystick and spinner for my existing MAME cab and play the game there.

Because the Tron board will fail.  Repeatedly.  They always do.

And GOOD LUCK finding an even marginally inexpensive Tron stick.

Well.. if someone buys it ahead of me.. then it makes my decision a bit easier.  As I think I'm leaning towards the Track and Field and a Spy Hunter... but a Tron machine would be good too.

Tron, honestly, is a mediocre game at best.  It's the license, the controller, and the cab that are hella cool.
