First car?
« on: January 05, 2006, 03:07:40 pm »
Just curious about peoples first rides....

Mine was a 1974 Plymouth Duster, it was brown and huge and ungodly ugly.  But lordy was it fast, a 4 barrel 318 made it quite the speedster.  I bought it from a friend of my Mom's for $600 when I turned 16, a little old lady who literally only drove it to the store and church.  I kinda wish I still had it....

I rebuilt my first car while still at school. It was a Toyota Corona. I didn't have it for long though before I brought my first Charger at age 18.

I sold the Toyota out of rego, a smashed window and a blown diff for a few hundred bucks.

1984 Ford Escort.  In white.  Red interior.  But, it had the cool louvers on the back window to make it go faster. :)

On the other hand, the electrical system in that car had no problem with a 400 watt linear for my CB...  Tried to move the amp into my 90 Wrangler and promptly toasted the Jeep's computer.

That was in '88, IIRC.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Some pretty crappy cars named here, but I've got you all beat:

1979 Buick Century station wagon -- BROWN. Sweeeeeeet.

Some details:
- Imitation sheepskin on the front bench. Badass!
- Radio = Boom box with removable speakers, I needed to add 8 new D batteries to it every week or so.
- The car stalled making left turns from a stop, I had to plan my routes accordingly, no lefts from stop signs or red lights unless I was willing to run through them without stopping. I had to do this leaving my house, trying to time when I pulled out of the driveway to catch the green light.
- Chrome wheel covers from KMart (where I worked at the time) really dressed it up. Yeeeeah

Eric.

'74 Ford F-100 truck.  bought it from a junkyard when I was 15, completely rebuilt it by the time I was 16.  It's the second to last year of real trucks....when they still had steel dashboards :)  I also raised it 3 inches, and put big ass tires, a roll bar, and a show bar with spotlights attached(a show bar looks like a roll bar, but its attached to the bed of the truck and just makes the truck look tough,  it would just punch holes in the bed of the truck if I ever rolled it.  A roll bar is inside the cab of the truck attached to the frame).  It was made for off roading.  I still have it and it still runs great, but I don't drive it very often.

It was a POS, but I missed it since I was then without a ride.

A sweet-ass baby blue w/blue leather interior two-door 1977 Cadillac Deville mo-fos.  8-track player.
It used and leaked about as much oil as it did gas.

'80 International Scout.  Man did I love that thing.  Too bad it rusted to hell.  The body rusted so bad that the floor had holes in it and always scared the crap outta anybody in the passenger seat.  Nothing like looking down at your feet and seeing the highway zooming underneath.

1977 Buick Regal.. that thing was a tank.  I had it for about 10 months before it was totalled.  I was stopped waiting to make a left turn, and someone plowed into the back of the Buick doing about 45mph....  If I had a compact car I would not be writing this now because I would be dead..

I learned to drive on a 1981 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham.  It was a land yacht, with the abominal 4-6-8 engine in it (which we had disabled).

It had the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in though, and I actually miss the car a lot.  It was the smoothest riding car I've been in, and actually moved pretty well considering the fact it was the size of a small town.

Mine was an '81 VW Rabbit diesel.   got great fuel mileage, but had this persistant electrical problem with the fuse box.   Shorted right down the middle of the box.  I solved it with a small piece of wire which bridged the gap.

Loved that car, otherwise.   Kept it for a couple of years, until it started eating starter bushings for breakfast.

I had a Vet. (Chevette that is) Monster of a car. I could do 0 to 10 MPH in just under 9 seconds! It had been painted green and the paint on the hood was cracking nicely. Great car.

After that I got a Ford Escort. Another beauty. I know you guys are jealous.

'78 Chevy Caprice Classic station wagon.  Brown with some rust coloration.

Windshield leaked, so I kept a giant blue tarp in the back for when it rained - I'd slam it in the two front doors and the tailgate to keep it secure.  Roof fabric stretched from all the moisture, so I couldn't see out the back window.  If you flicked the turn signal too hard, the shaft would fall out of the steering column.  Couldn't run the windshield wipers with the lights on while idling, otherwise it'd stall.

That thing was a TANK.  My sister knocked down a tree with only a minor dent in the fender.   I even drove it across a paintball field and we shot it up.  What a great car.

I miss that car. It was by far the best car I have ever owned. It never had a major problem, and any problem it ever did have was easy for me to fix myself.

'78 Toyota Celica.  Neat little car for a starter.  Flipped it and wrote it off.  Bought a '70 VW beetle.  Flipped it and wrote it off.  Then got a black '90 5.0 stang.  Too cool to wreck that.

My buddy actually had a corona wagon I think.

My quartet of '70s American Iron:

'72 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu with the 307.  Unfortunately it was a four door.  Wish I still had it though--first cars are always fondly remembered.  Traded for:

'79 Ford Fairmont Futura.  Say it fast:  Futura!  You can say it fast, but fast it weren't.  4 cylinder, burned a quart of oil every 75 miles (blue smoker).  Traded quickly for:

'73 Ford Maverick Grabber.  Now we talking.  3 speed, Boss 302 4 bbl Holley carb--beat to hell but still fun.  Loved that car.  And it witnessed my love as well:  my first real girlfriend made a man out of me on the faux sheepskin-covered passenger seat.   Sold it for:

79 Chrysler Cordoba.  Oh man, the car was BEAUTIFUL.  318, black with red pinstriping, factory moon caps, blood red interior (no "Corinthian Leather" though) factory 8 track stereo with FF/REW (yeah baby!).  75000 original miles.  Too bad it ran like a 1970's Chrysler product...which means it didn't.  Walked many miles in my Pumas that cold winter.

1989 Honda CR-X si, gun metal grey with glass/moon roof. It was a nice little hot hatch for a young 20 yr old back in '95. 4 years later I got my 2nd car, a 1991 Nissan 300ZX 2 seater n/a, and my (old) CR-X in comparison to the Z felt like a wooden crate with small wheels. The Z was superior in every way  ;D

My wife's first car was the Dodge Mirada (same car with dodge badges). Before we finally sold it off to some sucker lucky new owner, I had put 4 - 904 automatics in it. I could swap that tranny in 45 minutes flat. What a piece of junk. She would call me while stranded in some major intersection because it would just die. It seemed to do it when *she* turned left. I could turn left in it for days, and it would never quit me ::)

What a fine, fine automobile.

1970 Pontiac Lemans.  350 V8.  Boy was that car fast.     Shortly afterward I sold it and got a 78 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.  That was a great car, but very underpowered with a 268 V8.
