I haven't played the third yet, but it's pretty much universally being touted as completely redeeming the series. I, like you, haven't been able to get into WW like I did the original. I'm pretty far into it, but I'll play it for a few hours and then go weeks or months without playing it, then one day I'll think...."hmm...maybe I'll give that another go..." and so on.
One of the big problems with WW is that they got rid of the magical feeling of the first one and tried to give it a badass feeling. So they replaced the Prince with someone who sounded like the Marleboro Man and put a ridiculously out-of-place heavy metal soundtrack into it, plus they upped the difficulty level considerably. It wasn't nearly as good.
Now that the third one is getting such high praise, and specifically because everyone's saying that they brought back the feeling from the first game and got rid of the badass prince, I really want to complete WW so that I have the whole story before playing the third, and last, chapter of the Sands of Time series. Which isn't so hard. It IS a good game. If there never was a Sands of Time to compare it to, in fact, it would be a spectacular game...
