yeah he's a little crazy, but it does piss me off when people cant say merry Christmas anymore.  yes im a Christian, but if i went around saying happy kwanza, even if someone did get offended, they wouldnt do anything about it.  its just cuz the majority of people in the US celebrate Christmas, and there are a few retarded liberals out there pitching a fit cuz they are being "offended".  bull crap.

if anyone should be offended it should be the Christians.  our sacred holidays have been butchered.  instead of the true meaning of easter, we hear about bunnies and candy and thats ALL thats said.  instead of the birth of Jesus, we get ho ho ho, and its all about friendship and the family and NOTHING else.  if i went around saying "happy january 17th!  its all about beer and pretzels!"  instead of "happy Martin Luther King Jr. day"  i'd be critcized by everyone and their mom.

even the hippies and atheists can see all this crap that is going on.

yeah he's a little crazy, but it does piss me off when people cant say merry Christmas anymore.

But that's the point...no one is stopping you from saying Merry Christmas anymore. Just because schools choose not to sanction any particular holiday, doesn't mean it makes sense to extrapolate a BAN ON ALL THINGS CHRISTIAN!  That's unreasonably paranoid.

There's no "War on Christmas"...the majority of the "Happy Holidays" B.S. is perpetrated by corporations that are happy enough to broaden the "Holiday" market. I know this because I work directly with marketing people. I have helped develop and sell products for numerous companies, and I've been privy to merchandising meetings where the marketing guy has specifically changed "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays" because his company will sell more product that way. Why do you think O'Reilly himself used the term "Holidays" on the very page he's trying to hock his gaudy products? So he can make a few extra bucks from consumers of other denominations.

O'Reilly (in particular)is  trying to blame Liberals for de-Christianizing the holidays, then he turns around and stabs Jesus in the back to sell of few extra "Holiday" baubles with his ugly mug pasted on them.

I'm an atheist and I say "Merry Christmas" from time to time because it's a freakin' pop-culture term. If I'm talking to someone of noticeable ethnicity I'll make an effort to figure out what holiday they celebrate and make my well wishes accordingly. Why can't we just accept that business is business, and no one is stopping you from wishing me (or anyone else) a Merry Christmas!  (Accept maybe Bill O'Reilly!)  ;)

Good, that settles it. So there's no problem with "Happy Holidays" after all.

i really hate to say it as I very very rarely bring anything political ever to forums like this, but its in the everything else so I don't mind.
The christmas vs holiday is just another thing to distract America from the war.  We watch polls about whether "christmas" should be ok in the general public while the polls for actually important things such as.. oh I don't know.... 2,000 American soldiers dying become "old news."
Just another reason why I don't watch non-local news.

RamaHanuKwanzMas to you.

2,000 American soldiers dying become "old news."

Interesting that the implication is that we the people can't walk and chew gum think and talk about more than one thing at the same time and that somehow we've forgotten about "The soldiers dying in Iraq".

Dunno why you fret about it, since even BLIND people can't escape that fact, what with the ghoul-watch and constant reporting of the deaths of our soldiers.  Here's an idea, since you think it's taking our "focus" off of that fact.  A little homework for you, if you will.  Tell us if you aren't told at least 5 times before a week goes by about how many were killed in this coming week and what the body count is now.

In the meantime, everyone try to keep the shiny objects out of sight, lest we all get further distracted ::)

The idioits over at Lowes tried to call their Christmas Trees "Holiday" Trees, who the freak else is going to buy one of those things for anything else other than Christmas? Are you trying to appeal to non-christians to by a fake tree in the November\December timeframe?

Now that's just stupid. Nobody said marketing guys were bright. There's a reason they don't sell Christmas Dreidel's for Kwanzaa!

O'Reilly is just as bad as those he rips on.  Look in his store at the Jessica's Law stuff.  $3.50 for a sticker?  Where does all the profits go?  (hint: his initials are B.O.)

FYI: (ripped from cbs) "The Jessica Lunsford Act would put an electronic monitoring device on every sexual predator released into the community, for as long as 30 years."

Seems to me the best solution is not to release people that are that much of a threat, but what do I know?

And so the EE thread goes ;D

I most certainly agree with you on that solution.  Time and again, it's been demonstrated that without drastic measures, they almost certainly will reoffend, so why the hell let them out AT ALL?  I'm for the deserted island strictly for sex criminals so they can all see/experience what their crimes do to the victims, but someone here said the British tried that with Australia, and now we have BrokenBones.

I'd like to go a step further and skip the electronic EXTERIOR bracelet, and go with the chip like they do with animals....add a GPS thingy in there too.

What I'm questioning is why the rash of female teachers seem to be treated WAAAAAY less harshly.  If you swapped out the female teacher and male student and told the SAME story about some 40-year-old MALE student and his female student, there'd be nightly stories on your local news about "OMG WHADOWEDO WHADOWEDO?!?!?"  Instead, it's looked at as "man, talk about every boy's fantasy!"

Heck, just look at the disgust we have when a priest does it.  Why should a female teacher be any different?  They wanted equal rights, now give it to 'em

I have made my thoughts pretty clear here before. Sex offenders should be executed.

Sex offenders where children are the victims should be executed then brought back to life and executed again.

I grabbed her grog and she slapped me right across the face.  She musta thought I was you.  It was dark.  She probably couldn't tell without that light how dead sexy I am.  I forgave her until she refused to give me a flagon of mead....or was that "she refused to flagon my mead"?

On the sex offenders note. Whatever they do they really need to remove "Providing pornographic material to a minor" from the ranks of sex offender laws. I'm sorry, but I just don't see how not checking someone's ID for a copy of Playboy is a big enough offense to brand someone for life with restrictions that seem to be aimed at serial child rapists.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

yeah he's a little crazy, but it does piss me off when people cant say merry Christmas anymore.  yes im a Christian, but if i went around saying happy kwanza, even if someone did get offended, they wouldnt do anything about it.  its just cuz the majority of people in the US celebrate Christmas, and there are a few retarded liberals out there pitching a fit cuz they are being "offended".  bull crap.

if anyone should be offended it should be the Christians.  our sacred holidays have been butchered.  instead of the true meaning of easter, we hear about bunnies and candy and thats ALL thats said.  instead of the birth of Jesus, we get ho ho ho, and its all about friendship and the family and NOTHING else.  if i went around saying "happy january 17th!  its all about beer and pretzels!"  instead of "happy Martin Luther King Jr. day"  i'd be critcized by everyone and their mom.

even the hippies and atheists can see all this crap that is going on.

While I agree with much of this sentiment, I feel that for your sake I shouldn't egg you on.  Normal people aren't as Jesus freaky as you until they are all grown up and have had their souls pounded out of them by a life characterized by disappointment, dull routine and years of failing to relate to and/or exert any kind of meaningful influence/control on their teenagers.  Actually normal people never reach your level of religeous fanatacism.  You, on the other hand, are only like 23 years old or something and are already so wacko that you'll manage to teach your kids to hate you, and jesus while they're at it, by the time they're 13 or 14.

It would be sad if it weren't simultaneously so hilarious.

Well, no, perhaps not.  But I find it pretty comical that, especially as an atheist, you're fired up and ready to run to the rescue of the god person who's sensitivity isn't being respected, when that same person referred to the people who disagree with his point of view as:

a few retarded liberals out there pitching a fit cuz they are being "offended".

You'll have to excuse me if I'm not too worried about his thin skin.  I ain't attacking his religion anyway.

My point, perhaps crudely made, is that it is exactly the outcome the he, or any parent, will likely reach when they get so caught up in an idea that they do ridiculous things like not letting their kids participate in halloween because it's a pagaan holiday (as though Christmas isn't) or refusing to allow Santa or the Easter Bunny into the holidays because they aren't Christian constructs.  I should note that I'm drawing from Hulksters posts in other threads regarding religion; I'm not just infering this stuff from his short post in this thread.

If it makes me seem any less mean I would say exactly the same thing to Hulkster if he was an Atheist who wouldn't celebrate Christmas or Halloween because they originated as (and, at least with Christmas, still is to a large degree) religeous holidays.  And it's what I meant by, "While I agree with much of this sentiment."  Because I think people are lame who won't say, "Merry Christmas," or who insist that it has to be called X-mas.  It wasn't an attack on his religion, it's an attack on fanaticism.

In my opinion Hulkster's attitude and behavior toward religion will more than likely lead to his kids rejecting it which, if I was on some kind of anti-religion mission, I should just be rubbing my hands together while thinking to myself, "mwahahahaha little does he know what's in store for him when his own actions lead to 'my side' gaining his children as new members".

So, could I have been cooler about it?  I guess.  But it's not like I said he's a retard for believing in God.  I said that the lengths he goes to to express his religious views are abnormally extreme and will likely lead to results that he would be very unhappy with.  Hulkster, I assume, would be the last person to argue that his behavior is somehow common or normal, considering that he is fully aware of (and dismayed by) how Christmas, Easter and Halloween are celebrated by the vast majority of Christians.

Going all self-righteous and fanatic on your kids will lead to exactly what I described in my last post.  It's where the rebellious preacher's son stereotype stems from.

But often it doesn't need to be said, it is just being unnecessarily aggressive . You got the brain and adequate talent, but you need to learn self control.

Only up to a point. If for instance a couple decide not to send their child to school or tutor him/her at home then in most countries the state will step in to protect the child's interests. The same applies to parents who sexually or emotionally abuse their children.

Parents don't own their children, nobody does, and there will always be a tension between the rights of society at large to decide how children should be brought up and the rights of parents to decide the same. The question is where you draw the line.

Well yes, some kids need rescuing from their parents but as a general rule, most good parents should never expect or require the state to ever intervine in order to uphold their children's best interests. This is the sole job of being a parent if nothing else.

Provided of course the kids are raised within normal socially acceptable boundaries and lets be honest, such boundaries are and should be quite diverse.

I also feel that parents do own their children. To suggest otherwise is just a play on words.

It not only matters if they female but if they look good too.

"Debra Lafave, 25, will serve three years of house arrest and seven years of probation. She pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery. If convicted at trial in Hillsborough County, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison on each count."

"A woman who authorities said had sex with high school boys during alcohol- and drug-fueled parties has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, officials said."

Geisel was sentenced to six months in jail, but that includes time already served. She should be out sometime this month.

After her jail term, Geisel will be on probation for 10 years.

Yeah, I forgot about the ONE teacher they threw the book at.  It's hard to keep up lately with all the female child-molesting teachers.  Natrually, the uggos are the ones that you try to forget the quickest ;)

Even the ones who have terrible prison pics taken are still pretty when they've got their warpaint on

Because I think people are lame who won't say, "Merry Christmas," or who insist that it has to be called X-mas.

I have just recently read about "X-mas".  Something (and I'm HORRIBLY paraphrasing here) about the X being the greek/hebrew/something letter used to denote or represent Christ.  I'm not certain who/how Christmas got turned into X-mas, but I wonder if someone had learned this and started using it so as not to offend their "non-religious" friends while still trying to keep Christ in their Christmas, and it ended up being an offensive word as people now believe it to be doing just the opposite.

It'd be something I'd look into if I were outraged over it, but I care less about it than turning everything into "holidays" around Christmas.  And I don't care that much about it.  There's more ACTUAL religious significance to Hannukah than Christmas, really, and that's a religion that seems to be way down on the list for being taught in school too.  Mebbe it's looked at as an honor...being persecuted for being Jewish.

What is the reason to celebrate around this time of December if you don't believe in religion?  The customs and practices are for the most part tied to religion and its practice, so do you not give gifts to others or gather as a family so as to be consistent in your views (not shmokes specifically, anyone not wanting this time to be considered a religious holiday), or if so, how have you removed it from religion?

It should be as celebrated as Washington's birthday or Labor Day if you wish to consider it to be a non-religious-themed holiday then, shouldn't it?  We'd all have an extra day off, and we'd have a cookout and whatnot.  And don't tell me just because you live someplace it's cold or snows that you wouldn't cook out.  Being a sissy is no reason not to celebrate with a cookout ;)

That's why I added the keyword "hot" to my question! heh.  I did have some hot teachers that I often hoped would take advantage of me in Middle School and High School. I got a lot of detention, on purpose, but nothing ever came of it.  :(

I got a lot of detention, but that was mostly because I had a smart mouth.

I think at one point I had detention every day for nearly 3 straight school years.

I've fired up the BBq when it's below 0 outside.  We'd never stop celebrating x-mas though.  Too much money involved.  Same thing with all those other craptacular holidays.  There isn't a day in the year where we're not supposed to be working or buying something.  I'm all for the "nothing holiday".  Kind of like "August Day" in Canada.  A holiday about having a day off work and that's it.  No gifts, no honey-do stuff, nothing.  Just sleep in.

That is supposed to be what mother and father days are for...

Though, I got into a fight with my wife on Father's Day last year.  She got up before I did and took the kids out for the day.  I'm like, WTF, it's Father's Day and you took my kids so I can't spend the day with them.  She figured she was giving me a day of quiet and rest.  Go figure.

This should get the topic back on track.

Politically Correct Holiday Wishes (with warranty)

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an
environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive,
gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within
the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or
secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular
persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice
religious or secular traditions at all.

May you have a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically
uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar
year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other
cultures whose contributions to society have helped to make America great
(not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country),
and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability,
religious faith, political belief, sexual preferences, or gender identity of
the wishee.

(By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is
subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no
alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to
actually implement any of the wishes for themselves, herself, himself,
itself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at
the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as
expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one
year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever
comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance
of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.)

And the bonus is, when you go to print those cards out, you'll have to use type so small, no one will be able to read it, making it even MORE certain not to offend ;D

I think I'll have the wife print those out as gag cards to wrap around the real ones ;D

What is the reason to celebrate around this time of December if you don't believe in religion?  The customs and practices are for the most part tied to religion and its practice,

For exactly the same reason you choose this time of year.  Think about it.  Dec. 25 does not coincide with the actual anniversary of the alleged birth of Christ.  The date and most of the traditions of Christmas that you participate in are copped directly and unchanged from a religion that you don't believe in (Pagaanism).  Quite similar, in fact, to my situation if you think about it.  So what is the reason for you to celebrate around THIS time of year?

Because it's fun

Why do we have parties on Friday nights instead of Wednesday nights?  Because more people will show up.  What makes Christmas such an amazing time of year is that EVERYONE is celebrating.  Do you really think it would be a suitable replacement for you to celebrate Christmas on April 6 (the date many people ascribe to the actual anniversary of the birth of Christ) or any other day of the year?  Do you think that the same Christmas electricity would exist for you or your children as you counted down the days, April 1, April 2, April 3...

I celebrate it cos it's the best damned party of the year and I'm not gonna stay home on account of a less than ideal venue.

Erm, not really.  We have them Friday because most people don't have to wake up early for work on Saturday.

Your not saying anything different than me.  I said that we have them on Friday nights so people will come.  Of course it's not mere coincidence that more people come to parties on Friday.  I know why more people come on Friday.  I figured that the reasons the turnout is better on Fridays go without saying.
