Jukebox/Showcase Cab/Multimedia Center/End Table idea
« on: November 24, 2005, 07:41:59 pm »
Someone please tell me I'm an idiot and I should never try to come up with semi-original ideas.  I think I may be going a little overboard, but as I was figuring out how to build a jukebox and where to put it, ideas just kept getting added on.  In my livingroom right now I have an end table to my couch which has my projector sitting on it which I use to watch my dvds and I was thinking it would be a good place to put the jukebox, but I'd have to find a new place for the projector and get a smaller end table to fill the space.  This is where ideas just kept getting added on, I figured why not build in the projector and end table, since the projectors there, might as well hook up the computer to it so I'll also have a showcase cab.  Since its supposed to be a jukebox I should add an amp...well I could move my dvd player and amp into the cab and that way the jukebox would play over the 5.1 surround sound and my nice speakers and I wouldn't have big cables running across the room anymore to connect the dvd player.

Anyways, heres my idea, I'm a horrible artist and its not to scale, but its a side view with areas marked where things will go:

It just occured to me I should move the projector to underneath the coffetable.  It would better protect it and look a lot nicer.

I usually get pretty quick responses here, but I guess a lot of people are gone because of Thanksgiving.  Heres a few more things I thought I'd mention:
My initial jukebox design takes a lot from this project and the plans given within  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,20824.0.html
I basically just made it shorter so it would be easier to see over and slightly raised the controls.
Also, I was off on the height of the monitor, its only 15'' tall, not 19 as I put in the sketch, which is why the height of the cab may seem off.

I would most likely make it out of some sort of stainable wood so it would look more like a piece of furniture, and it will only be 24'' wide so it won't take up much space.

Am I going crazy for thinking this is a good idea?  Would it look like a horrible monstrosity in my living room?  Any input would be appreciated.

If your table is going to be 18" I would make the table fold so when its not in use it looks like a regular jukebox. That way when your short on room it don't take up that much space  ;)

Well, since the only response was a suggestion to make it look more like a jukebox I decided to rethink this project.  I think I'm going to just make it a standard jukebox, it would be a whole lot simpler and would look better.   I have plans down the road to build a mame machine that will go in the dining room so having this thing sitting next to the dining room would just be an overkill of electronics.

I was going to wait until after Christmas, but I don't really have anything to do this weekend, so I think I'll go buy the wood tommorrow.  Since I'll just be doing something very similar to Junes jukebox (link in previous post) I probably won't post any progress reports until its done.

I think we think alike...I am always looking to get the most out of any space.

I have alot of ideas for projects, most of my early ones were for thibkgs that included everything, all kinds of controllers, etc.

The only thing that comes to mind is having the table connected to the cab. What happens when you move or decide to change the layout of your room?

Good idea, very creative. It would be nice to have all your audio and video in on place.
